Summary
Nineteen-year-old Hanno has always been known for his strength. Broad-shouldered, hard-working, and unmistakably male, he believes the secret desires he hides at night can never threaten the place he holds in his frontier village.
He is wrong.
Caught receiving the village headman in secret, Hanno is abandoned by his family, condemned by the temple, and sent to the Great Temple of Eshgar for purification. There, beneath the authority of Mitrash, his body is examined, drugged, confined, and remade for a new role: not as a man who gives seed, but as a nazrim—one who receives a husband, bears his children, and enters his household as spouse.
At the end of the rite, Malik, patriarch of the powerful House of Saref, is sent into Hanno’s cell.
What begins as judgment, ritual, and forced transformation becomes the first bond between two men whose lives are about to be tied together beneath the sun.
