Work Text:

The ink of the Accord of the Jade Seal had dried nearly a century ago, but its weight still managed to press the air out of Byun Euijoo’s lungs every single morning.

To the global media, the modern monarchy was a grand, romantic spectacle of heritage and economic power. To Euijoo, it was a rigorous ledger. Since the day he turned sixteen, his life had been measured in green lines on security grids, manual overrides of palace data, and the precise, unyielding geometry of how he held his posture at a diplomatic dining table. He was the Crown Prince of Joseon-hae. He was stable. He was reliable.

He was entirely, profoundly gray.

Sitting at his mahogany desk, the heavy leather-bound constitutional journals cast long shadows under the blue luminescence of his tablet. Outside, a summer thunderstorm violently whipped against the bulletproof glass—a chaotic reflection of the anomaly currently nesting inside his wing.

Wang Nicholas.

The Crown Prince of Fermosa-nien was a living, breathing systemic error. Nicholas wore oversized hoodies to formal breakfasts, yawned in front of conservative ministers, and looked at Euijoo’s carefully constructed royal mask as if it were a cheap piece of glass he wanted to shatter. He was a disaster that Euijoo had been forced to accept as a fiancé under the absolute law of their ancestors.

Deep within a secluded corner at the furthest edge of the East Wing, a door stood shut. Behind it, custom soundproofing panels worked perfectly, keeping a growing secret hidden from the King’s guards. But if one were to walk down that dark, isolated corridor and press a palm against the cold wood, they would feel it.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

A low, rebellious, lawless heartbeat thrumming through the ancient stone. A secret, neon-lit lounge where the air smelled of premium gin and citrus peel, built for a boy who couldn't sleep in a palace that felt too much like an upscale tomb.

Staring at his screen in the dark, Euijoo knew the delicate balance of his wing was shifting. He told himself that keeping a close eye on the digital irregularities in his grid was merely a calculated sacrifice for geopolitical stability—that as long as the chaos was contained at the end of the hall, his own balcony would remain peaceful. He told himself a thousand lies just to avoid admitting that the low, distant hum of hidden life was the only thing keeping the palace's suffocating silence from breaking him entirely.

Euijoo opened his desk drawer, his fingers brushing against the heavy, cold metal of the royal signet ring. The seal that was supposed to dictate his entire future.

He had no idea how quickly the rigid boundaries of his life were about to be dismantled. He couldn't foresee the hazy, intoxicating atmosphere of the neon room pulling him in, or the intense clashing of their worlds that would push them far past the point of no return. He didn't know that out in the real world, away from the suffocating guards, a sequence of unexpected encounters and sharp, lingering jealousies would force him to question everything he knew about himself.

Right now, he was just an eighteen-year-old prince staring at a glowing interface, listening to the rain.

The ancient texts said their future was already written, carved into the jade by men who had died generations ago. But as the thunder cracked overhead, echoing through the empty, silent corridors of the palace, the first microscopic fracture appeared in the statue.

They were about to find out that a forced destiny wasn't something to be suffered. It was something they had to seal themselves.
