Oikawa’s phone started ringing immediately after.
“Surprise!” He exclaimed into the phone, maybe a little teary but no one could see him anyways.
“You asshole.” Iwaizumi choked out. Nevermind, he was letting those tears out now just from hearing Iwaizumi’s voice and how emotional it sounded.
“They only gave me the go-ahead to tell people today. I’ve known for a week, but the jersey came in today,” Oikawa explained, sniffling. “Press conference is next week.”
“We’ll watch,” Iwaizumi said firmly. “God, I’m so proud of you, Tooru. No one deserves it more.”
“This isn’t fair, Iwa-chan. You can’t say this stuff when you’re not here.” Oikawa huffed.
“Hey, turn your camera on,” Iwaizumi said, turning his own on as he spoke. Oikawa felt more tears well up at the sight of that fond, proud smile on Iwaizumi’s face, his eyes radiating warmth even through the screen. “Come on.”
“Ugh, just so you know, I look horrible.” Oikawa warned, turning his camera on. He was clearly tired, bags under his eyes and his hair all messy. Tears trickled down his cheeks, and his nose and eyes were red.
“You’re still pretty,” Iwaizumi said sincerely. “Oh, hold on… the others are asking to be added.”
“Wait, what!” Oikawa barely had time to process before several people all joined the call at once and he dropped the phone, showing only his ceiling. A bunch of voices yelled out in protest.
“Oi, Oikawa!” Hanamaki called.
“I got no warning! I look horrible! Iwa-chan made me cry.” Oikawa showed just the top of his forehead.
“I did not,” Iwaizumi sighed. “He got emotional.”
“Aw, captain.” Matsukawa made a face at the camera.
“Congratulations, Oikawa-senpai!” Yahaba called, echoed by Kunimi and Kindaichi.
“Thanks guys.” Oikawa lifted the camera, smiling at them all.
“Aw, he is crying.” Hanamaki pouted.
“Shut up, Makki.” Oikawa stuck his tongue out.
“He says the press conference is next week.” Iwaizumi informed them all.
“I’ll find a website, we can watch it together.” Yahaba said, determined.
“I know a couple, I’ll send them to you.” Watari gave him a nod.
“I’ll be in training, but good luck.” Kyoutani grumbled.
“The support from Mad Dog-chan is really overwhelming.” Oikawa deadpanned.
“You don’t need him, Oikawa-senpai. You have the rest of us.” Yahaba replied, nonchalant as ever, waving a hand dismissively.
“He’s right, Oikawa-senpai.” Kunimi nodded on his end.
“Whatever.” Kyoutani rolled his eyes.
“Hey now,” Iwaizumi sighed. “I thought you grew up.”
“You’re joking,” Matsukawa snorted. “They’ll never grow up.”
“Speak for yourself, Issei.” Hanamaki retorted.
Oikawa was content to lay in bed with his phone propped up beside him, listening to his friends banter amongst each other. His eyes even began drifting closed without him realising, and he never even noticed until he heard his name called.
“-kawa. Oikawa. Tooru.” Iwaizumi’s voice broke through his half-asleep haze.
“Hmm?” He blinked his eyes several times, frowning when he noticed no one else remained on the call other than the two of them. “Where’s everyone?”
“You started conking out so they wanted to let you get some rest,” Iwaizumi’s face softened. “Tired?”
“Good kind of tired,” Oikawa murmured. “It’s been a bit hectic and the team took me out to celebrate…”
“You deserve it.” Iwaizumi said meaningfully.
“Iwa-chan…” Oikawa’s lip quivered. “You’ll make me cry again.”
“Dumbass,” Iwaizumi said fondly. “Get some rest, you’ll need it for next week.”
Two days later, a knock sounded on Oikawa’s front door and he furrowed his brows, barely out of the shower with his hair still damp as he padded to the door and opened it without checking who was behind it. He simply stood there for a second, wide-eyed as he stared at Iwaizumi Hajime who was right there in front of him in a pair of sweatpants and an old jersey with a duffel bag slung over his shoulder.
“Iwa-chan…” Oikawa breathed.
“You’ll catch a cold with wet hair.”
“You –” Oikawa choked out, stumbling forward and closing the distance between them to practically fall into Iwaizumi’s arms. “Hajime.”
“Tooru.” Iwaizumi said in response, so warm and oozing fondness as he squeezed Oikawa tightly, with just the right amount of pressure the way Oikawa liked it.
“What are you doing here?” Oikawa muttered against Iwaizumi’s neck, lips pressed to the warm skin.
“Visiting you? Was it not clear?” Iwaizumi retorted, flinching when Oikawa pinched him. “Ow, okay. I was supposed to come and surprise you a couple weeks from now, but I pushed my flight up.”
“Iwa-chan, really?” Oikawa pulled away, eyes shining with emotion.
“Duh,” Iwaizumi rolled his eyes, cupping Oikawa’s cheeks and brushing his thumbs against the flushed skin tenderly. “How could I not come after you’ve become captain, huh?”
“You’re a softie under all that, aren’t you?” Oikawa teased, leaning in to kiss him.
“No one will believe you,” Iwaizumi grumbled. “Let me in, it’s hot as balls outside.”
“So crude, Iwa-chan!”

“You’ll be happy to know that you’re trending.” Iwaizumi said to Oikawa when he got back from practice.
“For the captain thing?” Oikawa furrowed his brows, toeing his shoes off at the door. “That’s normal, right?”
“No, dumbass,” Iwaizumi rolled his eyes, holding his phone up to Oikawa. “Look.”
“Hashtag Tooru Oikawa’s secret lover…” Oikawa read aloud before he snickered. “Iwa-chan, you’re trending not me.”
“They don’t know it’s me,” Iwaizumi scowled. “There’s people trying to guess who your partner is.”
“Has it made it to Reddit yet? That’s when it gets serious.” Oikawa passed the phone back, unlocking his own to scroll through his social media.
“Do you need to clear anything up with your media team before posting stuff like that?” Iwaizumi looked slightly concerned.
“They gave me the go ahead to post whatever I wanted when I told them we were together,” Oikawa shrugged. “I don’t really have restrictions.”
“You know they’re bound to ask about it during the press conference now, right?” Iwaizumi asked. “Those journalists…”
“Let them,” Oikawa’s lips curled up. “Might as well have some fun with it.”

My thoughts on Tooru’s mystery partner
So we must have all seen the tweet by now, yk the one with Tooru and a hickey in his new captain jersey (congrats to him for that btw how exciting!). And now his mystery partner is trending and everyone’s trying to figure out who tf it is! I have some theories, hear me out:
- Tómas Gallo: previous captain and OH for San Juan. He’s retired now but it’s no secret how close him and Tooru were and I’m sure he vouched for him to be captain and probably took him under his wing. Maybe that blossomed into a romantic relationship over the years?
- Shoyo Hinata: OH for Asas Sāo Paolo. I think we’ve all seen the infamous selfie of the two of them in Rio years ago that Tooru posted. He talks about Shoyo pretty often as someone who helped him find himself during a time he was feeling lost, and who knows what they may have gotten up to during their time together in Rio 👀

So hear me out
I keep seeing everyone’s wild theories about who Tooru’s partner could be but I have maybe a more outlandish one, or perhaps it’s the one that makes the most sense actually.
I’ve been a fan of his for a very long time, as in since he joined San Juan, so I’ve been around since the early days when he talked more about his volleyball journey in Japan before he came to Argentina. He mentioned his old team a lot so I went searching for some videos ages ago and I found some old interviews he did in high school and game footage from back then. He played especially well with a player called Hajime Iwaizumi, so I dug deeper.
Turns out! Him and this Hajime guy used to play together and they’ve been playing together since they were literal KIDS! There’s some brief stuff in interviews and pictures of them in high school but it’s clear how close they are, and that Hajime was the ace of the team esp in their third year of high school.
Tooru doesn’t talk about his personal life very much but he mentions his friends from back home in some interviews and talks about how lucky he is to have them etc and how supportive they are. The childhood friends to lovers trope is right there… am I crazy for this?

TOORU OIKAWA INTERVIEW XX-XX-XXXX TRANSCRIPT
[Interviewer] Oikawa, hi, thanks for being here so soon after your press conference.
[Oikawa] Thanks for having me!
[Interviewer] First of all, let me just start off by saying congratulations on the captaincy! How does it feel?
[Oikawa] Thank you. It feels great, honestly. I mean, it’s not my first rodeo.
[Interviewer] Have you been a captain before?
[Oikawa] Yeah, during my third year of high school, I was captain of our volleyball team.
[Interviewer] Oh that’s a fond smile on your face. Missing those days?
[Oikawa] Of course, I always do. I miss those guys, you know? I mean, we still talk but they’re all in Japan and I’m here.
[Interviewer] Is it difficult to keep in contact with them?
[Oikawa] Sometimes, yeah. But they’re great. I messaged in our group chat last week actually before the news about my captaincy ever went live to tell them all and they hopped on a call instantly to congratulate me.
[Interviewer] That’s lovely! How’d you celebrate?
[Oikawa] The team took me out for some drinks actually. And my partner came to visit me.
[Interviewer] Your partner… the one everyone’s been trying to uncover?
[Oikawa] It’s a little funny… yeah that one. I’ve never kept it a secret that I’m in a relationship but I’m a pretty private person when it comes to my relationships… not just romantic ones so I just never felt the need to share much information. Which is why it was such a shock to people, I guess.
[Interviewer] Do you mind all their investigating? Because we’re all curious who it is.
[Oikawa] No, no, I don’t mind. My partner was a bit baffled but he doesn’t mind either.

[Oikawa] Where do I begin!

It was down to you and Mattsun but apparently someone else made a Reddit post about why it was you, so…” Oikawa shrugged. “I’m impressed.”
”This is what happens when you have insane fans.” Iwaizumi muttered.
“They’re so smart, aren’t they?” Oikawa sighed, a smile on his face. “So, what do you want to do?”
”What do you want to do?”
”I’ll be back in Japan soon,” Oikawa mused. “We could…”

on a more official note, yes that video was a confirmation. my “mystery partner” as you’ve all dubbed him is iwaizumi hajime. he’s been my best friend since we were born and he will continue to be my best friend until the day i die, only he’s also my partner in life now. his social media is still private so don’t try to follow him because it’s useless.
