Chapter Text
The midday heat on the Lava Springs baseball diamond was thick enough to chew, but it had nothing on the sudden, inexplicable tension shifting between home plate and the pitcher's mound.
They weren't actually singing, of course. No one was burst-into-song belting in the middle of a staff baseball game, and they certainly weren't executing a perfectly synchronised, Broadway-adjacent jazz-funk routine in front of the entire Wildcats roster. But the energy? The back-and-forth? The sheer, unadulterated theatrics of their body language?
It felt exactly like a performance. And neither of them was backing down.
Ryan twirled his baseball bat with a theatrical flair that belonged on a stage, not a dusty field, tilting his white striped cap back just enough to look Chad dead in the eye. “You think I don’t have game?” he challenged, a sharp, knowing smirk pulling at his lips.
Chad gripped his own bat, his knuckles white, a sudden rush of heat hitting his face that had absolutely nothing to do with the July sun. He let his eyes deliberately drag down - scanning the tight fit of Ryan’s pristine white trousers, the sharp line of his shoulders, and the ridiculous, confident tilt of his hips - before snapping his gaze back up to lock onto Ryan's.
“I’ll show you how I swing,” Chad countered.
The words hung in the air, practically dripping with a heavy, unspoken double meaning.
Ryan blinked, his inner monologue suddenly derailing. Wait. What?
It was a well-established fact across East High that Ryan Evans was gay. He wasn’t shouting it from the rooftops, but he also wore sequins to school and spent his weekends choreographing show tunes; it wasn't exactly a state secret. Everyone knew. Well, everyone except Troy Bolton, who was famously so dense and unobservant about anything outside of basketball and Gabriella Montez that he probably thought Ryan just really liked hats.
But Chad Danforth? Chad was the epitome of the straight, varsity jock. He had spent the last school year pursuing Taylor McKessie. Granted, that had fizzled out the second summer started - turns out Taylor’s hyper-determined, five-year career plans didn't quite mesh with Chad’s intensely chill, “let's see what happens” vibe, and they'd amicably parted ways as friends after a month - but still. Straight. Totally straight.
Except Chad was currently looking at him like he wanted to eat him alive.
As the game resumed, the banter only escalated, turning into a whirlwind of thinly veiled sexual innuendos masked as sports commentary. Chad was sliding into bases with a little too much flair; Ryan was catching balls with an theatrical, arched-back posture that felt entirely illegal for a family-friendly country club.
Ryan’s head was spinning. He’d always joked to himself that his gaydar was utterly broken - usually because he spent too much time overanalysing theater boys - but this was ridiculous. He's just joking, Ryan told himself, trying to ignore the way his heart hammered against his ribs. It's just jock banter. He's trying to get in my head to win the game.
But then Chad caught his eye from across the diamond, gave a slow, deliberate wink, and Ryan realised with a jolt of pure adrenaline: Oh. Oh, wow. He is flat-out flirting with me. In front of the entire team.
Across the field, Chad was having a minor internal crisis of his own.
He’d always appreciated when a guy looked good. He wasn't blind. He’d look at Troy or Zeke and think, Yeah, they're good-looking blokes, but he’d never thought twice about it. It was just a fact. But watching Ryan Evans command the entire pitch, glowing under the sun, oozing a completely unapologetic confidence while matching Chad step-for-step?
Something shifted violently in Chad’s chest. It was like a light switch flipping in a dark room. He wasn't just appreciating; he was wanting. The realisation that he was definitely bisexual hit him with the force of a fastball, and instead of panicking, it just made him want to push Ryan harder. To see how far the theatre boy would bend before he broke.
By the time the final out was called, the scoreboard was entirely secondary to the absolute meltdown occurring in Ryan’s nervous system.
The Wildcats scattered towards the dugouts, chatting loudly about iced water and the evening shift, completely oblivious to the tectonic shift that had just occurred on the diamond.
Chad lingered by the home plate, tossing his baseball bat lightly from hand to hand. The rest of the team filed out, leaving the two of them alone in the shimmering heat of the field.
“So,” Chad said, his voice dropping an octave as he stepped closer. The easy, laid-back charm was there, but it was laced with something heavy and deliberate. “You definitely have game, Evans.”
Ryan tucked his bat under his arm, trying to summon his usual theatrical composure. “I told you I did. You just didn't want to admit it, Danforth.”
“Oh, I'm admitting it,” Chad murmured, stepping right into Ryan’s personal space. He was taller, broader, sweat glistening on his collarbone, but Ryan didn't back down an inch. In fact, Ryan tilted his chin up, a sudden, commanding spark lighting up his blue eyes.
Ryan’s throat went dry. Broken gaydar my ass, he thought wildly.
Chad smirked, his eyes dropping briefly back down to Ryan’s lips before snapping back up. “Hey. Let's do something fun. Let's switch.”
Ryan blinked, momentarily thrown off his rhythm. “Switch? Switch what?”
“Clothes,” Chad said, a sudden, mischievous glint in his eye. “Just a laugh, right? Prove to the guys that I can pull off the polo, and you can see what it feels like to wear a championship jersey. Come on. Locker rooms are empty.”
It was a ridiculous excuse, and they both knew it. But Ryan wasn't about to back down from a challenge - especially not one that involved getting Chad Danforth behind closed doors.
“Fine,” Ryan murmured, a slow, wicked smile spreading across his face. “But if you stretch out my polo, you're buying me a new one.”
The staff locker room was cool and quiet, a sharp contrast to the baking heat of the field. The heavy scent of cedar, sweat, and cheap body spray hung in the air.
The moment the heavy door clicked shut behind them, the playful, public bravado evaporated, replaced by a thick, heavy silence. Ryan set his bat against a bench, suddenly acutely aware of how small the space between them felt.
Chad didn't waste any time. He pulled his damp jersey over his head in one smooth motion, tossing it onto the bench.
Ryan tried to be polite. He really did. But his eyes betrayed him, tracing the defined lines of Chad’s chest and abdomen, glistening slightly with sweat from the game. It was a masterpiece, and Ryan’s artistic appreciation was rapidly turning into sheer, unadulterated desire.
“Like what you see?” Chad asked softly. There was no mockery in his voice, just a raw, newfound confidence. He stepped directly into Ryan’s personal space, towering just enough to make Ryan look up.
“I'm a designer, Chad. I appreciate good aesthetics,” Ryan retorted, though his voice lacked its usual theatrical sting. He reached for the buttons of his own shirt, his fingers trembling just a fraction.
Before he could undo the second button, Chad’s hands were there, stopping him. Chad’s fingers were warm and rough against the back of Ryan’s hands.
“Let me,” Chad murmured.
Ryan held his breath as Chad slowly, deliberately unbuttoned the shirt, his knuckles brushing against Ryan’s skin with agonising slowness. For a guy who was supposedly a total novice at this, Chad was acting with an intense, deliberate focus that made Ryan’s knees weak.
“You're full of surprises today,” Ryan whispered, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs.
The process of swapping clothes became a silent, charged dance of its own. When Ryan handed over his fitted, bright white trousers and shirt, his fingers brushed deliberately against Chad’s palms. Chad didn't flinch; his breath hitched slightly, his gaze locking onto Ryan’s.
For all of Chad’s physical dominance on the basketball court, right here, in the quiet intimacy of the locker room, Ryan entirely held the reins. He stepped in close to help Chad navigate the notoriously tight tailoring of his shirt, his hands lingering on Chad’s chest, smoothing down the fabric. Chad let him, completely captivated, a flush rising on his neck that had nothing to do with the summer heat.
When they finished, they looked utterly absurd, yet entirely right. Ryan was swimming slightly in Chad’s oversized, sweat-stained Wildcats jersey, the fabric hanging loosely off his frame, giving him an effortlessly soft, messy look. Chad, meanwhile, was practically bursting out of Ryan’s white coordination, his broad shoulders straining against the fabric, looking delightfully ridiculous but entirely unbothered.
“Well,” Ryan hummed, circling Chad like a director reviewing a lead actor. “It's a look. Unconventional, but it works for you.”
“Yeah?” Chad grinned, looking down at himself, then up at Ryan in his own jersey. His chest tightened in a thoroughly pleasant way. “You don’t look too bad either, Evans.”
“Please. I make everything look good,” Ryan countered.
They walked out into the bright afternoon sun towards the main pavilion, still clad in each other’s clothes, drawing a few amused glances from the country club guests.
The walk from the staff locker rooms to the main terrace of Lava Springs was usually a mundane trek, but today it felt like a victory lap. Or a walk of shame. Honestly, Ryan wasn't entirely sure which category swapping clothes with one of the school’s star basketball players fell into, but he was leaning heavily towards the former.
Chad’s oversized jersey kept slipping off Ryan’s shoulder, the loose mesh breezy against his skin. A few yards away, Chad was adjusting the waistband of Ryan's trousers with a look of intense concentration.
“Everything fitting alright there, Danforth?” Ryan teased, tossing a glance over his shoulder.
“Shut up,” Chad chuckled, though there was zero heat in it. “Your tailor deserves a medal, Evans. I feel like a wrapped present.”
“Well, you certainly look like one.”
The words had slipped out before Ryan could stop them, but honestly? He didn't want to take them back.
Chad paused in his tracks, the waistband of the white trousers slipping from his fingers as he looked at Ryan. A slow, incredibly hot smirk spread across his face. “A present, huh? You gonna unwrap me, then?”
Ryan’s breath caught in his throat. He looked around the sunny pathway. The main terrace was only about fifty yards away, and he could hear the distant clinking of glasses and the murmur of wealthy club members. But right here, shielded by a thick wall of manicured hedges, they were entirely hidden.
“Careful, Danforth,” Ryan purred, stepping right back into Chad’s space, completely unfazed by the size difference. In fact, wearing Chad’s massive jersey only seemed to make Ryan bolder, a stark contrast to his usual perfectly tailored exterior. “You might be a star on the court, but out here? You’re playing by my rules.”
Chad’s smirk softened into something a bit more breathless. He looked down at Ryan, entirely captivated by the sudden, commanding authority radiating from the theatre boy. “Yeah?” Chad whispered, his voice dropping low. “Show me the playbook, then.”
Before Ryan could reply, the rustle of the hedges made them both jump slightly. Sharpay stepped out from the path leading to the golf course, a massive pair of designer sunglasses shielding her eyes, looking every bit the country club princess.
She stopped dead, looking Chad up and down in Ryan's tight clothes, then looking at Ryan drowning in the Wildcats jersey.
Ryan braced himself for the screeching, or at least a cutting remark about fashion sacrilege. But Sharpay just pushed her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose, her eyes scanning the two of them with terrifying accuracy. She wasn't a villain - she was his sister, and she knew him better than anyone.
“Well,” Sharpay said, her voice remarkably calm but dripping with immense amusement. “I knew the heat index was high today, but I didn't realise it was causing hallucinations.”
“Sharpay,” Ryan warned, though his cheeks flushed a brilliant pink.
“Relax, Ry,” she scoffed, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. She looked at Chad, who was suddenly looking very intensely at his own shoes, looking thoroughly caught. A surprisingly soft, knowing look passed over Sharpay’s face. She didn't mind. Honestly, she was a bit of a romantic, and she secretly had a massive appreciation for the finer things in life - girls included. Just last week, she’d sighed to Ryan while watching some of the female lifeguards, muttering that girls are just prettier than boys, we'd look so good together, though she'd never admit that to the rest of the world.
Sharpay stepped closer, adjusting the collar of Chad’s - well, Ryan’s - shirt on Chad’s broad shoulders. “It’s a bit tight in the chest, Danforth, but the colour suits you. If you ruin my brother's clothes, though, I'll have you cleaning the pool with a toothbrush.”
“Yes, ma'am,” Chad muttered, a genuine smile breaking through his nervousness.
Sharpay patted his cheek lightly, then turned her sharp gaze to Ryan, giving him a subtle, supportive wink that let him know she entirely had his back. “Don’t be late for dinner, Ryan.”
With a dramatic spin, she sauntered off towards the clubhouse, leaving them alone once more.
The silence that settled between them was lighter now, the initial panic melting away into something incredibly charged. Chad looked down at Ryan, the easy, laid-back athlete persona entirely gone, replaced by a raw, intense focus.
“So,” Chad murmured, stepping so close their chests almost brushed, the loose fabric of his own jersey rustling against Ryan’s skin. “Where were we before we were interrupted?”
Ryan smiled up at him, a wicked, confident spark in his eyes as he reached up, his fingers wrapping firmly around the collar of the shirt Chad was wearing. He tugged him down just an inch, asserting every bit of control.
Chad didn't fight the pull. If anything, he let himself sink into it, his large hands coming up to rest tentatively on the sides of Ryan’s waist, right where the oversized Wildcats jersey bunched up.
“Right about here,” Chad whispered, his eyes locked onto Ryan's lips.
Ryan didn't waste any more time with banter. He closed the remaining distance, pressing his mouth firmly against Chad’s.
The kiss was nothing like the choreographed routines Ryan was used to directing, and it certainly wasn't clean or orderly. It was a collision of sharp teeth, breathless gasps, and the intoxicating scent of summer sweat and cedar.
Chad’s hands tightened on Ryan’s waist, digging into the loose mesh of the Wildcats jersey as if he needed an anchor to keep from spinning off the earth. Ryan, meanwhile, held his ground with absolute authority, his fingers tangled firmly in the collar of his own shirt, pulling Chad down to his level.
When they finally broke apart, neither of them moved out of the other’s space. Chad’s forehead rested against Ryan’s, his breath coming in short, ragged pants. A dark, intense flush had crept up his neck, staining his cheeks a brilliant crimson.
“Fuck,” Chad breathed, a stunned, lopsided smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “You really don’t do things by halves, do you?”
“I told you, Danforth,” Ryan murmured, his voice low and thoroughly satisfied as he smoothed down the lapels of Chad’s - well, his - tight white shirt. “If I’m going to play, I play to win. Now, what was that I said about unwrapping my present?”
Chad’s chuckle was low and a little breathless, the sound vibrating right against Ryan’s chest. He glanced back over his shoulder towards the open path, then turned his gaze back down to Ryan, his dark eyes absolutely gleaming with newfound intent.
“Right here?” Chad asked, his voice dropping to a rough whisper.
Ryan let out a soft, amused huff, his fingers sliding down Chad’s chest to give the tight material of the white trousers a firm, possessive tug. “As thrilling as a public scandal sounds, Danforth, I think we can find somewhere slightly more private. Follow me.”
Turning on his heel, Ryan led the way down a lesser-known side path, the oversized Wildcats jersey swaying around his thighs. Chad followed close behind, his eyes fixed on the sight of his own jersey drowning Ryan's frame. It was a bizarre kind of possessiveness, watching someone else wear your name on their back, but Chad found he didn't mind it one bit.
They slipped into one of the club's vacant, air-conditioned storage bungalows near the edge of the green. The moment the door clicked shut, shutting out the roar of the afternoon sun, the playful banter evaporated.
Chad didn't wait. He closed the distance, his hands finding Ryan’s waist again, backing him firmly against the sturdy wooden shelving unit.
“You’ve been driving me crazy all afternoon,” Chad admitted, his voice rough as he leaned down, burying his face in the crook of Ryan's neck. He breathed in the scent of expensive cologne mixed with the salty tang of summer sweat.
Ryan gasped, his head tilting back against the shelves as Chad's mouth found the sensitive skin right below his jaw. “Oh? And here I thought you were just exceptionally focused on your batting average.”
“Shut up,” Chad muttered against his skin, his hands sliding up under the loose hem of the jersey. His palms were warm and calloused, a harsh contrast to the soft fabric, sending a shiver straight down Ryan's spine.
For all of Chad's physical dominance and athletic strength, he was still taking his cues from Ryan, waiting for the nod of approval. Ryan loved it. He reached up, his fingers sliding through Chad’s thick curls, pulling him up into another deep, bruising kiss. This time, there was no hesitation. They moved together with a sudden, frantic urgency, a rhythm they hadn't needed to choreograph.
Ryan's hands shifted down to the buttons of the white shirt Chad was wearing. “I believe I mentioned something about unwrapping,” Ryan murmured against Chad's lips, his fingers working the buttons with practiced ease.
“Be careful with the tailoring,” Chad teased breathlessly, though he actively helped Ryan shrug the tight shirt off his shoulders, letting it drop to the dusty floor.
As they shifted, the power dynamic flowed effortlessly between them. One moment Chad was pressing Ryan up against the shelves, completely taking charge with a fierce, heavy intensity; the next, Ryan would twist them around, pinning Chad’s wrists down with a sharp, commanding gaze that left the basketball player entirely breathless and eager to please.
By the time the shadows outside began to lengthen, stretching long and golden across the country club grounds, the air in the bungalow was thick and quiet.
Ryan sat on the edge of a clean linen crate, successfully restored to his own white trousers, though he hadn't bothered to button the top few buttons of his shirt. Chad was leaning against the opposite wall, clad once more in his Wildcats jersey, looking thoroughly content and slightly dazed.
“So,” Chad said, breaking the silence with a soft chuckle as he ran a hand through his completely dishevelled hair. “Are we going to pretend this was just a really intense post-game analysis?”
Ryan smirked, tilting his head up as he fastened his watch back onto his wrist. “Darling, I don't pretend. But if Troy asks, you can absolutely tell him we were just practicing your swing.”
Chad let out a loud, genuine laugh, shaking his head. “Troy wouldn't notice if we did it in the middle of the cafeteria, let's be honest.” He stepped forward, bridging the gap between them one last time, bending down to press a soft, lingering kiss to Ryan's lips. “See you tomorrow, Evans.”
