——————
Simon had spent a long time thinking about what would happen to him once the hull finally collapsed.
The thought had been easier to avoid when he thought that he would only be in the blood ocean for a few hours. But it only grew more and more present in his mind the longer he was down there. It was like a splinter that had long overstayed its welcome and begun to infect the surrounding flesh.
Towards the end, it was one of only two things he could truly focus on.
If there had been any silver lining to the experience, he reasoned, it would be that it would be fast. He’d probably be dead before he even had time to realize what was happening.
He wished it had been that simple.
As much as he had desperately fought and struggled to survive, sudden non-existence would have been much kinder than hearing his own muscles tearing apart as the blood ocean burned what little untouched flesh remained.
He had hoped that when the sub finally- mercifully collapsed in on itself. He would be condemned to oblivion instead of hell. Instead, it seemed like oblivion was merely a brief respite.
“EYE MOVEMENT DETECTED”
COGNITION TEST: WHAT IS TWO PLUS TWO
The sound assaulted Simon’s ears like broken glass being scrapped against a chalk board.
He instinctively tried rolling away from the noise, only to fall from it instead. He tried bracing his fall with his arms, only to fall short and painfully land on his left side, feeling something rip at the same time
It hurt to open his eyes. He didn’t think he’d ever seen light so bright- even the false sun supposed to preserve the last tree was dimmer.
As his eyes began to adjust, he became aware of something moving towards him. He scrambled away from the- whatever it was- only to feel something restricting his movement
As his vision cleared he realized that the thing approaching him was a metallic claw.
Obviously his attempts to escape became more frantic.
He felt a tug and something popped, and suddenly he was freed.
Simon scrambled backwards towards a wall desperately trying to find any method of escape, and found a ladder. Something was wrong, his left arm wasn’t reacting correctly, after a few failed attempts to climb, he managed to scale the ladder with one arm.
He found a small alcove with a large package of some sort. He shoved himself inside, and opened the bag, desperate to find anything to protect himself and found-
A corpse.
Simon screamed, putting additional tension on his already strained vocal cords. He barely felt the second fall, and managed to avoid the claw a second time.
Desperate, Simon’s eyes darted around the room to find anyway to escape, before they finally landed on a small door, barely large enough for him to climb through, much less crouch comfortably.
It took longer for him to open the door than it should have before he fell into a small room filled with mops and cleaning supplies.
He barely managed to close the door and brace it with one of the mops before the claw started scrambling for the door knob.
As the adrenaline began to wear off, the pain from his injuries suddenly made themselves known, and he returned to the blissfully quiet dark.
