Video transcript:
Ugh don’t even get me started
Okay so first of all this is embarrassing but it’s kind of important for the context
So on my first day at work
We work at a hospital by the way for context
On our first day I kind of um
Passed out so she gave me this really annoying nickname like think collision or wreck
Something like that so first of all I think that really speaks for itself she’s kind of funny sometimes
But she always calls me that and she’s just so arrogant like it’s so irritating how full of herself she is
But she’ll like follow me around sometimes and like hover over my cases and stuff and like she’s not an attending but she just walks up to me and starts talking or like asking questions about my cases
And it’s like oh my god I know how to do my job please let me do my job
You have your own cases to take care of I got this job for a reason
I am perfectly capable of doing it and if I need help I will ask like ugh
But anyway that’s mostly it
Yeah
Sorry this got a little long

It was a deviation from her normal style of content in a seriously risky manner. Victoria knew that when she got the idea, when she recorded it, and when she posted it. She was just so sick of Doctor Santos and her hovering and being called Crash like she was completely incapable of doing her job.
And she has the internet and all of her followers at her disposal, all of whom are likely to side with her and give her good advice, or just help her feel a little better about the situation.
Her profile up until now has been very impersonal. Tips to get through shifts, little anecdotes, study tips from when she took the MCAT, little things like that. Self care as a doctor, how to make time for yourself while working such a demanding job. She knows if she starts to tell her viewers about her personal life, they’ll want more. They’ll dig, prod. It’s a risk to give them any information at all about her work and private life, but it’s a risk she finds herself willing to take for reassurance that she’s not crazy and Trinity Santos is as infuriating as Victoria thinks she is.
What she didn’t expect–although she realizes immediately she should have expected it–is the questions. And the assumptions.
is she cute?
ur coworker wants to fuck u nasty
unfortunately she’s into you
hey girlie she’s attracted to u
How unrealistic. What world does her audience live in? This isn’t a rom-com. Besides, Doctor Santos is preoccupied with Doctor Garcia. Everyone knows that. Well, her TikTok audience doesn’t know that, but she can’t take it that far. Dishing out the details of Yolanda Garcia and Trinity’s situationship for her viewers would probably get a lot of views, sure, but even Victoria doesn’t hate Trinity that much.
They’re making something out of nothing, Victoria tells herself. They don’t know anything. She gave them a glimpse into her life and they’re all bored on the internet making something up to entertain themselves. That’s what happens on the internet. People blow small, meaningless facial expressions and shifts in tone out of proportion and then get their hearts broken when it turns out they don’t mean anything.
Victoria reads the comments, far too many of them, enough to see plenty of perspectives. People think Trinity wants her (ha), people think she wants Trinity (never in a million years). As if Trinity Santos could ever be anything except an annoying coworker on a bad day and a sort of almost friend on her best day.
Because here’s the thing. Victoria definitely misjudged Trinity on their first day. Does she love the whole ‘Crash’ thing, no. But she’s not a monster. She’s just a woman. A really defensive, closed off, probably traumatized woman.
Since she’s been thinking about pursuing psychiatry, Victoria tries not to diagnose her peers–all sources in fact, say, she should under no circumstances do this, ever–and it’s not like she whips out the DSM-5 whenever Trinity deflects a personal question, but there are things that happen. Like that time when Victoria worked with Trinity on a case involving a teenage girl who was miscarrying what they figured out was her soccer coach’s fetus, and she could see Trinity going pale beside her as she talked to the girl, and the complete lack of jokes and insults the rest of the day.
Victoria never takes notes, never tries to piece together anything, tries not to make assumptions.
Some things are just hard to forget. Victoria’s not about to ask Trinity any questions, let alone make any diagnoses. It’s just made her more tolerant. Understanding. She spends a lot of time around her coworkers, and not every second of it is completely impersonal. That’s normal.
Victoria’s feelings towards Trinity Santos are conflicted. For the most part. For example, she can admit that Trinity’s pretty funny. Even when it’s maybe a little inappropriate, Trinity makes her laugh. And she’s not really that arrogant. When she doesn’t feel belittled, she seems good at answering questions and asking them, at listening to her residents and attendings.Which is why it’s so much more irritating when Trinity continuously stops whatever she’s doing to talk to Victoria. Does she not trust Victoria to do her job? Yes she’s young, but has she not proven herself? Does she think bothering Victoria while she’s trying to do her charting will make her more likely to talk her up to her Mom?
Victoria can’t puzzle it out, and it’s not like Trinity Santos is exactly known for being an open book. Even if Victoria snapped at her, she’s sure Trinity would snap right back, storm off, and be exactly the same again the next day as if nothing had happened.
Victoria, on the other hand, would be wracked with guilt, mull the whole thing over for days, analyze Trinity’s movements for days, trying to see if she was still secretly upset. It just wouldn’t be worth it.
And, of course, she can tell none of this to her followers. It’s easy enough to tell them the ways in which Trinity annoys her. It’s harder to describe the many ways in which she helps. It would be impossible to cite many of the instances of Trinity proving her good intentions, and it would violate HIPAA to describe the many things she’s done to be a good doctor. Trinity annoys her, but Victoria trusts her as a doctor. She’s shown her audience one side of a complicated shape, and she can’t really show them the rest of Trinity. Although, being that she’s already getting crush accusations, it might be better if she doesn’t start suddenly defending her.
At least she’d had the foresight to wonder if Trinity had a TikTok account, do some light research (scroll through accounts with the name ‘Trinity’ in them for five minutes) and block her profile. The last thing she needs is Trinity finding out. If Trinity already thinks she’s childish, finding out Victoria posted a video online complaining about her surely wouldn’t help. It was already embarrassing enough when her coworkers found out about the profile, when an all-too smug Princess had flipped her phone around, Victoria’s video playing on her screen, asking redundantly, delightedly, “Is this you?”
And that was before she posted anything remotely relating to her personal life. ‘Embarrassing’ would now devolve all too quickly into humiliation worthy of at the very least considering –if not following through with– quitting her job.
It’s deeply irritating, all the comments insisting Trinity has a crush on her, that she has a crush on Trinity, and vice versa. Trinity is a coworker, nothing more. A funny coworker. Sometimes. That’s it.

WAIT ARE YOU HER COWORKER SLDJFLSDJF
/
Victoria used to hate it when Garcia came to the ED. It irritated her how much she favored Trinity. It was childish, and Victoria knew it, so she tried not to let it show, but she couldn’t help it. It just seemed so unfair. Garcia vouched for Trinity so strongly, all the time, even when she made a mistake. No one had ever fought for Victoria like that before, no one looked at her like that, no one held her hand over the scalpel to guide her as she cut through subcutaneous tissue.
No one had ever backed her up even after she dropped a fucking scalpel in their foot.
It’s weird to work alongside Yolanda Garcia after years of shaking her hand at holiday parties and dinners, to be her actual coworker after Yolanda was her Mom’s cool coworker who slipped her an alcoholic seltzer at her high school graduation party.
It’s weirder to see her flirt with Santos. Victoria’s known her so long she feels more like an aunt of some sort, so to see her eyes roaming Trinity’s body, lingering in all the wrong places, it brings a sour taste to her mouth.
Victoria had heard the stories. Of course she had. They’d spread through the ED like wildfire, such blatant flirting in the workplace was practically unheard of, especially on one of the employee’s first days of work.
So, yeah. It annoyed Victoria, just a little, when Robby would say, “Page Dr. Garcia,” and Trinity would visibly brighten, standing up straighter, smoothing her scrubs, fixing her hair. It was obnoxious, the way Garcia would walk into the ED and look Trinity up and down and smirk at her while Victoria briefed her on the case.
The closest thing she’s ever had to that, Victoria supposes, would be Cassie, and, sure, there had been a point in time when Victoria had hoped that they would turn out just like Trinity and Yolanda, but it just never happened. Cassie seemed straight, or maybe the age difference was just too much for her to get her head around, she had said a few times with awe in her voice that she was old enough to be Victoria’s mother when Victoria stared at her lips for too long.
“You’d have been a young mother,” Victoria had argued once, a weak argument, but an argument nonetheless.
Cassie had smiled sadly, putting a hand on Victoria’s shoulder. “I’d be your age.” She’d walked off, and they’d never had the conversation again. Cassie had never let her close enough.
Of course, it wasn’t like things exactly went better for Trinity and Yolanda.
Victoria had noticed over time–everyone had–as their greetings shifted. Garcia ignoring Santos, whispered-shouts in stairways, talks Trinity would always walk back in from with hollow eyes and downturned lips.
Victoria took to avoiding her after those talks, wanting to avoid being on her hit list.
She still couldn’t quite tell if they were still a thing or not. It had never been a real relationship as far as Victoria knew. They didn’t seem particularly fond of each other anymore, there was no more flirting over unconscious patients, but Victoria wasn’t so naive as to think that that meant they weren’t still fucking.
She may be young, but she’s not that clueless. Hate sex, or something, maybe. She tries not to think about it too hard.
There had been one time, when Victoria was pretty sure, or at least she sometimes wondered, if the whispered hallway fight had been about her. Trinity had been called away to another case while Victoria and Yolanda were working on finishing up a patient. Victoria had been the one to make the last cut as Garcia guided her (touch-free, for what it’s worth), nodding in approval as Victoria put the scalpel down.
“Not bad, Crash.”
Victoria had jolted in surprise. She was used to the nickname from Santos, but Garcia? One of her few coworkers who struggled slightly with the transition of her being twelve-year-old Victoria to Student Doctor Javadi? Victoria felt her eyes widen, staring at Garcia, a sick feeling trickling down her throat. Did Trinity tell her about that? Had they laid in Trinity’s bed, postcoital, retelling the story of Victoria’s worst moment, laughing at her?
Victoria had never hated the nickname more than she had right in that moment. “Don’t call me that.”
She’d walked off, disposing of her gloves as she went and pumping hand sanitizer as she passed the dispenser, but the confusion in Garcia’s eyes as she’d turned stayed with her.
Victoria had seen out of the corner of her eye, minutes later, Garcia tugging Santos by the sleeve out to the hallway, had felt guilty eyes on her afterwards.
It was fine. It was whatever. Victoria didn’t want Trinity’s pity. Not for a problem of her own creation. She’d never apologized, either, so Victoria had never brought it up again.
Garcia had never called her Crash again. Trinity had behaved no differently, i.e., she still used it regularly.
It kind of stung, and Victoria hadn’t meant for the stupid nickname to be part of the forces pushing Santos and Garcia apart, but it seemed it had. She understood if Trinity blamed her just a little.
She does wonder, sometimes, if she thinks about it a little more than is normal. When she beats Trinity to work, which is frequently, she wonders how Trinity gets to work. If her hair is messy because she slept in at Garcia’s and ran out of time to brush it. If the coffee she brought was bought by Garcia. If the shirt she’s wearing under her scrubs is hers or–yeah, she might think a little too much about where Trinity spends her time off.
It’s not like it’s any of her business. Like it affects her at all. Santos and Garcia have been at a static point for a few months now, at least in the workplace, which is as far as it should concern Victoria.
But somehow the radio silence has only made her more curious. Does it mean they aren’t seeing each other, or are things in private the same way they’ve always been? Does the sudden quiet at work mean they’re actually tipping the scales far in the other direction off-shift, finally giving a go at a real relationship?
It’s no business of Victoria’s, yet she comes to love when Garcia gets called down to the ED, just to watch. She eyes Santos as Al-Hashimi makes the call, tries to decide if she’s happy or sad about her imminent arrival. Watch as they work together, trying to see if there’s any hint of the chemistry they once shared.
Confusingly, they seem very normal. Not flirty, not unfriendly. Garcia never seems excited to work with Trinity, nor does she seem as though she’d rather work with someone else. She doesn’t tease Santos like she used to play with Langdon before his suspension. Trinity seems much the same, if a little more tense, but that doesn’t tell Victoria much of anything. ‘Tense’ was generally a good descriptor for Trinity Santos much of the time, especially in the early days of Garcia, or when she’s around Victoria. It would have been more informative if it weren’t such a constant of Trinity’s behavior.
These are the facts, and the emotional details. Victoria collects them, but it’s only after her shift, after months of consideration, that she makes her first real breakthrough. It’s scary, Victoria’s not sure what to make of it, if it means anything or if she’s just looking at it so hard she’s seeing a mirage.
Still.
Fact: If Santos and Garcia are still hooking up they’re being very secretive about it.
Fact: Santos (still) seems tense around Garcia.
Fact: Trinity is tense around Victoria.
Fact: Victoria spends far too much time thinking about her coworkers' mannerisms and sex lives.
Victoria thinks it says just as much about Trinity as it does about her, at least. She doesn’t like to think about what the facts indicate, it gives her a headache, that breathless feeling like Utah and Mateo all over again, short-lived as that turned out to be, and Victoria really doesn’t want to look too deeply into it. Being annoyed by Trinity is nice. Rolling her eyes at Santos is comfortable, familiar. Blushing because she’s being teased is fine, flushing in anger when she’s repeatedly called a nickname she dislikes is normal. No one blinks twice.
If she’s turning red to the tips of her ears for a different reason, Victoria doesn’t know what to do with that. She doesn’t know how to maintain a normal working relationship like that. She doesn’t know how to like Trinity, doesn’t know who she is at work if she has a crush on Trinity fucking Santos of all people.
In a way, all those comments asking about if Santos was hot and saying she had a crush on Victoria were infuriating because they touched on a thought Victoria was already struggling to push down.
As even more comments rush in, more and more accusations and mentions of the word “crush” flitting across her screen, Victoria wonders who she’s fooling other than herself. She hasn’t heard talk of Trinity having a crush on anyone else, or her having a crush on Trinity, but if she’s involved in the rumor, why would she hear about it?
Sometimes secrets stay secret among the PTMC employees. Sometimes. Rarely. Maybe this is one of those times. It must be, even if Victoria is the only employee who knows the secret.
The secret that maybe she does have a tiny, minor crush on one Trinity Santos after all.

Trinity Santos has an excellent ability to reignite Victoria’s irritation with her. It’s one thing when her comments start getting flooded with requests to unblock Trinity. She tries to ignore it. There are multiple Trinity’s in the world, after all.
There’s only one Trinity she has blocked, but Victoria tries not to think about that.
It irritates her more and more the more she tries not to think about it. Trinity has her for more than forty hours a week, she can’t even let Victoria have this one thing? God forbid she wants to be able to post her videos without worrying about what Trinity thinks of them.
The pls unblock trinity is annoying, but whatever. She doesn’t have to listen to them. A day will go by and the internet will move on to the next viral video and everyone will forget about Trinity begging to be unblocked.
Then she does it.
Victoria finds a screenshot of the interaction on twitter. To her surprise, Trinity’s really committed to the bit, her display name no longer ‘trinity’ but ‘PLS UNBLOCK ME DR J.’ Straight to the point, at least.
Someone commented under one of Trinity’s videos asking people to leave Victoria comments, ‘sooooo what’s the nickname.’ Trinity’s response is burned into the back of Victoria’s eyelids as she tries to go to sleep that night.
crash lol
Laugh out loud. All lowercase. Not a care in the world as she puts the final nail in Victoria’s digital coffin. Never again will she post a video without the comments being full of ‘crash.’ The one space she had where she felt somewhat knowledgeable and professional, where she was free of the weight of that mistake, ruined. Tainted. All for what, so Trinity could get some laughs? It crosses her mind although she hopes it isn’t the case, surely Trinity isn’t trying to kickstart her own account by mooching off of Victoria’s success? Even if she were, Victoria would have made a video tagging her if she’d just asked. She doesn’t think Trinity has any desire to be online like that, and while she can be irritating, Victoria had thought she was better than that.
Victoria’s in a terrible mood as she goes in for her shift the next morning, praying that maybe for once in her life Trinity will call out of work and Victoria can have some more time to process before she sees her again. As things are right now, Victoria’s not sure how she’s going to react if Trinity approaches her today. In the past, she’s always been able to keep herself from lashing out.
Today she doesn’t have the willpower.
She’s really trying not to take her anger out on everyone, but she felt Dana’s eyes of concern trailing her after Trinity greeted her by saying, “Morning, Crash,” and she shut her locker just hard enough to create a solid slam. She hadn’t meant to close it so forcefully, the words had just left Trinity’s mouth as she was swinging it closed, and it was just so fucking typical, to press the subject while acting like nothing was different, like she wasn’t actively trying to ruin Victoria’s online presence.
She’d walked away, saying nothing. It probably didn’t send the best message to the several coworkers who definitely witnessed it, but it was better than yelling at Santos and breaking down in the middle of the ER, which was the next most likely possibility.
She starts taking patients and Santos stays away from her, and the day gets better.
Patients come and go, minor injuries being treated and sent home, others they do what they can for and send the patients off to the OR, or the ICU, wherever they need to be.
It’s stressful in the normal way, which is weirdly comforting today. There is one moment when Al-Hashimi calls Victoria and Trinity to help take care of a code STEMI, but, for once in her life, Trinity keeps her mouth shut. They get through the entire procedure, including the arrival and departure of one Dr. Garcia, without any ‘Crash’s or dumb jokes.
She takes a few minutes after the STEMI goes to the cath lab to catch up on charting, focused on the computer and relaying all the information as the hospital whirls around her. She is, of course, quietly tracking one brunette ponytail as she moves around, checking the board, going into rooms, helping patients, leaving. Trinity Santos is suddenly everywhere, all over the ED, roaming from room to room, her laugh drifting across the room over the din, and god. It’s stupid, but how dare she laugh on a day like today? After everything she did online to ruin Victoria’s life, she has the audacity to laugh.
She stops a few feet behind Victoria, and there’s a screen over her head, Victoria knows it, but Trinity knows something’s up. Victoria’s certain. Or, at least, pretty certain. Trinity seems the same today as she is every day, it’s only Victoria who’s been acting differently, so the fact that Trinity left her alone for the whole STEMI suggests, at least to Victoria, that she’s learned how to read a room and elected to leave Victoria alone for the sake of the patient. Perhaps for Garcia’s sake, maybe Trinity didn’t want to fight in front of her. Maybe after what happened a few months ago, she doesn’t want to call Victoria Crash while Yolanda’s around.
Now, Garcia is gone. The patient is being taken care of in the cath lab. And Trinity inches closer to Victoria, to a ridiculous point if she’s still pretending to look at the board, she’d have to crane her neck and look nearly directly above her head.
Victoria’s not sure what sort of speech or silly joke Trinity has prepared for her today, but she’s not much interested in hearing it. Not today of all days. Her proximity is painful, an uncomfortable pressure on Victoria’s chest.
“Whatever it is, Dr. Santos, either spit it out or go somewhere else.” Victoria keeps her eyes on the screen as she talks, even as she hears Trinity spit out a laugh of surprise.
She steps up beside Victoria at the acknowledgement, arching an eyebrow. “Dr. Santos? To what do I owe the honor?”
Victoria bites her lip to keep from scoffing, straining her eyes to keep them on the computer. Trinity inches closer, putting an elbow on the desk, moving herself into the corner of Victoria’s sight.
“Your charts can’t possibly be that interesting.”
“Maybe you’re just that boring.”
Someone else might be offended. Trinity laughs, straightening, elbowing Victoria slightly. “Nice try, you’re obsessed with me. I have layers. You can’t figure me out.”
Victoria’s eyes slide away from the computer screen for the first time. Trinity’s wearing her usual smirk. Good. She has no idea how close to the truth she’s hit. Or, maybe she does. That’s the thing about Trinity.
“You hold your cards close to your chest.”
Trinity laughs. “Okay, nerdiest possible way you could’ve responded.”
Victoria turns to Trinity to glare at her, only to be taken aback by how close their faces are now that they’re facing each other. Her insult dies on her lips.
“Whatever.”
Trinity’s lips twitch at the start of a smile. Victoria absolutely does not look at them. Not at all. Not even when her eyes brighten and she moistens her lips with her tongue. Victoria’s gaze does not drop to Trinity’s lips even a little bit. Somehow, Victoria’s nearly forgotten her irritation in favor of pretending she’s not sneaking looks at Trinity’s lips.
Then she has to go and ruin it.
“You know, I had a patient pass out this morning. Reminded me of you, Crash.” Trinity doesn’t even give Victoria time to process, time to reply, but she must see the way Victoria’s face falls. “Ookay. Barrel of laughs today, aren’t we?”
Victoria sighs. Composes herself. “Why don’t you trust me to handle my own cases?”
Trinity freezes. For the first time in the span that they’ve known each other, she looks truly confused. Not interested, intrigued, frustrated trying to figure out a case. Trinity looks shocked in her complete and utter confusion.
“What?”
“You heard me. You always do this. Come up to distract me while I’m charting, or give me unwanted advice on patients I’m already treating, or trying to jump onto my cases. Do you think I can’t handle it? Do you think I’m a less competent doctor than you, do you think I’m too young? Calling me ‘Crash’ to make yourself feel like you’re better than me, or something? Have I not proven myself by now? What do I need to do for you to leave me the fuck alone?”
For some reason, Trinity doesn’t step back at all as Victoria nearly shouts at her. They’re less than a foot apart. Victoria can see every micro-expression that crosses Trinity’s face as she finally lets it all out, a dam broken, every doubt and bitter thought she’s ever had about Trinity spilling out of her until her chest loosens, and she can breathe again, and Trinity’s looking at her like they’ve never met before.
She looks sad. It’s surprising, but it’s true. Trinity looks devastated, really. Suddenly, Victoria’s chest is tight again and the room is far too quiet, and there are eyes on them, and Trinity won’t meet her eyes, and she’s turning away and heading for the bathroom and Victoria wants to follow, wants to apologize but her feet are concrete sunken into the floor, and–Dana. In front of her. Hand on her shoulder, tugging her towards the ambulance bay.
“Javadi. Come on, take five. Breathe in some real air.”
Victoria stumbles after with stiff legs, sucking in breath as the cool, early Spring air wafts over her.
“There you go.”
Victoria leans against the brick planter, looking up at the clouds, breathing in the fresh air to clear her head.
“I’m sorry.”
Dana shakes her head, but her eyes are soft. “I don’t know what’s going on between you two, but I can’t have people yelling in my ER. Especially not people who work here.”
“It won’t happen again, I’m so sorry.”
Dana eyes Victoria and goes on talking as if she hadn’t said anything. “And especially not people who work here yelling at their coworkers. The flow of this department relies on working with your coworkers. You gotta trust them.”
Doubtful eyes slide to Dana’s. She shakes her head again, although she smiles at Victoria’s suspicion. “They can make it hard, but you have to find a way.”
Victoria presses her nails into her palms, tries to feel the concrete underneath her feet. Deep breaths. In. Out. Chill the fuck out, Javadi, get a fucking grip.
“Besides.” Dana leans against the planter beside Victoria. “It’s not as bad as all that.”
Victoria stares at Dana in confusion. “What?”
“You were arguing right next to me, kid. I heard you. Dr. Santos doesn’t want to be your enemy.”
It’s said with a certainty and there’s an amused smile to her expression that Victoria longs to know more, how the moment looked through Dana’s eyes. She’s opening her mouth, struggling to find the words to ask when the doors open and Emma bursts out.
“Dana, they, um–they really need you inside.”
Dana pats Victoria’s shoulder. “Take another minute. It’ll be okay. No more yelling in my ER, alright?”
“Right.” Victoria looks down as Dana turns and goes back inside, turning back to the doors as Emma lingers, shifting from one foot to the other.
“Um. Javadi?”
Victoria swallows hard. “Yeah?” Her voice sounds so tired.
“I just wanted to say… I hope you and Dr. Santos work it out. You guys are cute together.”
Victoria’s jaw drops, and she suddenly needs to ask Emma a million questions, more than she wanted to ask Dana about the amused twinkle in her eye, but Emma’s scurrying after Dana, back to work, leaving Victoria to her shock and confusion.
You guys are cute together?
Does anyone else think that they’re… Together? Is that really how it seems? Victoria spent so much time analyzing Garcia and Santos she never wondered if there was another possibility. Trinity does spend a lot of time around Victoria, but she’s been so busy being annoyed she never considered it might look different. Unusual. Suspicious. But that’s ridiculous. Isn’t it?
Victoria’s mind drifts back inside. The look on Trinity’s face after Victoria spoke to her that way. Why was she so sad? They’re not really friends. Was she truly so upset to be misunderstood? Or is there something that’s obvious to Dana, to Emma, that Victoria’s been overlooking?
The sound of sirens penetrates the air, breaking Victoria out of her thoughts, an ambulance turning the corner soon after. Victoria pushes away from the wall as it approaches, meeting the EMT’s by the doors, pushing thoughts of Trinity away for the time being.
“What do we have?”

It’s not that Victoria doesn’t see Trinity again after that moment in the hub. They see each other. They stand across from each other over a patient, they pass each other many times in the hallway. They just don’t exchange any words, and Victoria makes an effort not to make eye contact with Trinity unless she has to.
Which is highly infrequent.
It’s not that Victoria doesn’t want to talk to Trinity. Okay, maybe it is. But it’s not just that she doesn’t want to talk to Trinity, she knows she needs to apologize, and she’s afraid of how it’s going to go over. If Trinity gives her a sarcastic comment and walks off, it’s going to hurt. It’ll be deserved, but Victoria doesn’t want to make Trinity’s day any worse.
Upon some reflection, she wonders if it was worse for Trinity because of what happened with Langdon all the way back then. She hadn’t witnessed it, but she had heard it. Literally, she’d been able to hear some of his shouting then, although she hadn’t been able to make out the words, nor did she know the context. Still. Victoria had yelled at her, just like he did, in front of a bunch of patients and coworkers.
She just doesn’t want to make Trinity’s day any worse than she’s already made it.
She finds her opportunity at the close of their shift, the sun down and the moon emerging, Trinity rifling through her locker for her jacket and bag. No one else is in the area, and it’s now or never.
“Hi. Dr. Santos. Can I, um, talk to you for a second?”
Trinity looks up, car keys in hand. She doesn’t look as upset at the sight of Victoria as she’d been afraid of. She doesn’t look happy, either.
“Hey–” Victoria can see her teeth closing down on a ‘C’ when she falters. Lips closing and opening. “Uh. Javadi. Sure, fine. What’s up?”
Victoria’s stomach sinks. It’s awkward. Trinity hates her. There’s no hope. Still, Victoria has to apologize. She owes Trinity that.
“I just… I want to say I’m sorry. For yelling at you, earlier. It was inappropriate, and you didn’t deserve it, you’re a really good doctor, and I really do think that, I really mean it, I don’t want you to think that what I said earlier today was all I think of you, I think you’re really, really great.”
Trinity watches her with an expression Victoria can’t read, not obviously upset, but not obviously pleased, either, and she tilts her head, and her lips are firmly shut, so maybe she’s expecting more–is she waiting for more apology?
“I would be lying if I said I weren’t occasionally frustrated by you, but it was completely inappropriate of me to raise my voice in the middle of the hub, if I had sensitive, or, er, negative information I wanted to discuss with you I should have done so in private, so. I’m sorry.”
Trinity’s stern gaze dissolves into a giggle. Victoria blinks, confused.
“‘Occasionally frustrated?’” She laughs harder, shutting her locker, leaning against the wall and, to Victoria’s great surprise, smiling at her softly. Their eyes meet and Trinity’s smile fades, cheek sucking into her mouth, eyes darting down. Victoria’s afraid she ruined the moment somehow, but Trinity looks back at her, and murmurs, “I also wanted to apologize.”
Victoria goes still. This is going far better than she ever expected. She had honestly expected Trinity to leave by now.
“I didn’t know you felt that way. All the stuff you said. About me hovering, and not trusting you, and stuff, and–I don’t say this to tell you you’re wrong about how you feel. It’s how you feel. Intent versus impact, and all that, I guess. So I guess I wanted to say I’m not trying to say you’re wrong about how you’re feeling, but I didn’t mean it that way at all. I just. I wanted to talk to you, I guess, and I didn’t know what to talk about that wasn’t work, so I talked about work. And I get now how that came across, but it was never because I didn’t think you could do it yourself, or because I thought I knew better.”
Victoria stands completely still, nearly forgetting how to breathe she’s so enraptured by Trinity’s words.
“Are you okay?”
Her mouth sinks into an ‘O’. “What?”
“Are you okay, Javadi? You look scary.”
Victoria’s jaw snaps shut. “I just don’t think you’ve ever asked me that before. And I was surprised by… Everything else. Also, whatever happened to Crash?”
Trinity looks at the floor, chewing on her lower lip, shrugging. “Figured I’d gotten in enough trouble over it, finally take the hint that you’re not the biggest fan. Thought I might retire it.”
Victoria nods, eyes roaming Trinity’s scrubs, her jacket, the car keys resting in her hand. Does she have evening plans? Does she need to give Whitaker a ride home? Is she holding up their whole evening?
Also, it doesn’t feel good to hear Trinity call her Javadi the way she expected it to.
“You can call me Victoria.”
“Okay.” The corners of Trinity’s lips turn up. “Victoria.”
Victoria frowns softly. That doesn’t sound any better.
Trinity must notice Victoria’s expression, arching an amused eyebrow. “What? Should I go back to Javadi?”
Victoria shakes her head. “No. I… Would it be crazy to ask you to go back to Crash?”
Now Trinity’s definitely smiling, shaking her head all smug, shrugging like it’s a great effort to switch the names out again in her head. “Gosh, I guess, if it’s really what you prefer.”
Victoria’s grinning, laughing, and so is Trinity, and it feels good to laugh with her.
Doctor Shen walks in with his bag and iced coffee. “Hey, Dr. Santos, Javadi.”
Both women greet him, the air in the room suddenly different. Less charged. Victoria’s eyes land back on Trinity’s car keys. As scared as she was to do this, she doesn’t want the moment to end.
Trinity’s eyes follow Victoria’s, twirling the key ring around her pointer finger. She tilts her head, drawing Victoria’s eyes back to her face.
“Would you, maybe, uh. Wanna go somewhere?”
Victoria nearly jumps. She realizes, of course, that she’s delighted by the prospect, she just didn’t see it coming. “Oh, sure! Where?”
Trinity only smirks in response, heading for the door. Victoria’s frozen to the spot, vaguely aware of Shen eyeing them with interest. Trinity looks back at the door, jerking her head towards the exit.
“Are you coming?”
“Oh. Right. Sorry.”
Trinity laughs as Victoria follows her to the door, and it feels good, not like Trinity’s laughing at her, not really, it just feels nice. Trinity takes her hand as they walk to her car, chapped after a long day of gloves and sanitizer. Victoria doesn’t care. She wouldn’t let go for anything in the world.

“Dennis can get a little twitchy about vacuuming, if you don’t mind leaving your shoes by the door.”
Trinity slides her sneakers off and makes a beeline for her couch, bag dropping onto the floor as she sinks into the cushions with a deep sigh.
Victoria slips her shoes off and puts her bag down by the door, taking in the room. It’s cozier than she expected. More lived in, somehow, than she pictured Trinity. Maybe that’s Whitaker’s touch, or maybe it’s Trinity’s.
“You can sit down.”
“Right. Thanks.”
Her feet do hurt after a shift, Victoria’s grateful to join Trinity on the couch, exhaling in relief as the weight is lifted from her aching feet. She moves a finger along the couch, watching the fabric.
“I like your place.”
“Oh.” Trinity looks around, as if remembering where she is. “Thanks. It’s mostly Whitaker.”
It’s what Victoria had initially thought, yet the way Trinity says it makes her think Trinity had more to do with the interior design than she’s letting on.
“Is freezer pizza okay? I don’t really feel like cooking.”
“Of course, yeah.”
“Cool.” Trinity stands, going to the kitchen. The kitchen is closed off from the living room, Victoria watches through the doorway as the light flips on and the shadow of Trinity moving around the wall as she prepares the food. It’s easy work, but Victoria’s still warmed at the thought of Trinity putting the pizza in the oven for them to share.
She comes back to the living room and stretches out even further than before, a hand poking Victoria’s shoulder unwittingly. Victoria starts at the touch, and Trinity retracts her arm, watching Victoria, squinting softly.
“You’re being weird.”
“What? No I’m not.”
“You are. You’re only saying, like, two word sentences. You’re normally kind of obnoxious about sentences.”
Victoria eyes Trinity softly. Yesterday, she’d have been irritated by the comment, now she’s biting back a smile. “I am not.”
“Are so. What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
Trinity makes a buzzer ‘incorrect’ sound. “Try again.”
Victoria laughs softly at how dorky she is. “Okay. Fine. I guess… I dunno. I was really expecting you to be mad at me, and I feel like I don’t know how to act around you when you’re… Like this.”
Trinity tilts her head, but the glint is in her eyes. The look. The one Victoria can’t identify. “Like what?”
She’s staring at Victoria so intently, and if Victoria didn’t know better she might think Trinity’s eyes were flickering down to her–
“Earlier. After I… Spoke strongly to you.”
The corners of Trinity’s lips twitch, but she doesn’t interrupt.
“Dana took me outside. She said some stuff, and then Emma… Jesus. What do you tell people about me?”
“About you?” Trinity shrugs, looking confused. “Nothing. Well, define people.”
“Like, Emma, Dana.”
“Nothing,” Trinity confirms.
Victoria looks down at her hands, trying to puzzle out what could have led Emma to say that then.
Trinity laughs softly at the look on Victoria’s face. “Jesus, what the fuck did they say to you?”
Victoria rolls her eyes, trying to laugh it off as she feels heat on her cheeks. “Um. Well, Dana’s was normal. Like, Dana stuff. She heard me, and she told me you don’t want to be my enemy.”
Trinity nods. “Okay, true. Also very tame. Why do you look like that?”
“Well, if you’d let me finish…”
Trinity grins, hands held up in surrender. Victoria goes on.
“Emma comes out to get Dana, and before she goes, she says… Well, she says she hopes we figure it out, because she thinks we’re cute together.”
Trinity’s eyes flit to the floor. “Oh.”
“Yeah.” Victoria looks down at her hands again, desperately running a finger along the couch to soothe her nerves. This is the part where Trinity lets her down gently. When she says pizza is just pizza. That she was right all along, her followers were seeing something that wasn’t there.
Trinity clears her throat. “I guess I should come clean.”
Victoria’s brain halts in its track of doom.
“Come clean?”
Trinity nods, a faint blush rising on her face. “Guess it was more obvious than I thought.”
“What was?”
Trinity looks at her, hard, a look like Victoria should read her mind and know what she’s talking about, but Victoria shrugs hopelessly, no idea what Trinity’s talking about.
“Why I was always coming to bother you. Why I always told you jokes and annoyed you and stuff. You’re cute when you’re flustered, you know?”
Victoria thought she was done blushing with her confessions complete. She was wrong. The heat is deep on her cheeks, she can feel her ears burning as she stammers, “No, I’m not.”
Trinity laughs softly, and there’s a fondness to it, a gentleness in her gaze that she’s never let show before. Victoria can’t look away.
“See? Like that.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Trinity scoots closer on the couch, hand reaching for Victoria’s. Warm, freshly lotioned hands. “Sure you don’t.” She looks Victoria over, fond, and questioning. “So?”
“‘So’?”
Trinity knocks their linked hands against Victoria’s side. “Don’t leave a girl hanging.”
“Oh. Right.” Victoria squeezes Trinity’s hand, inching closer, thighs nearly touching. She finds Trinity’s eyes, tries to embrace the embarrassing red on her cheeks. “I like you, too.”
Trinity blinks, hand going slack. “You do.”
“I was surprised, too.”
Now Trinity laughs, playfully slapping Victoria’s shoulder with her free hand. “Hey!”
“But I do.” Victoria catches Trinity’s hand and holds it, turning to face her. “I like you a lot.”
Her eyes dart down towards Trinity’s lips, and she catches Victoria in the act. She smirks softly, tilting her head and leaning forward just a little, tone teasing. “Have you done this more than once?”
Trinity had made it her mission–supposedly it was her birthday present–to get Victoria laid at the bar at the 21st birthday party she explicitly asked not to be held. Persistent as Trinity was, she’d found a girl Victoria said was cute that was willing to take her home. Now Victoria wonders how much of her hesitation had to do with a repressed preference to fuck her wingwoman.
“Yeah,” she says, defiantly. “Twice.”
Seventh grade totally counts, right?
Trinity laughs, cupping Victoria’s cheek, then she leans in and kisses her. It’s the best kiss Victoria’s ever had as soon as it starts, because it’s Trinity, but she tilts Victoria’s head just right, and slips her tongue between Victoria’s lips, and she makes a soft sound as Victoria’s nails dig into her shoulders, and fuck. Victoria could get used to this. If kissing always felt like this, she’d want to do it all the time.
She holds her breath and struggles to breathe through her nose, tongue flicking at Trinity’s mouth, exploring to great effect, only pulling back when she feels as though her lungs might explode.
Sucking in long breaths, Trinity rests her forehead against Victoria’s, a hand snaking into her hair.
“There’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you.”
Victoria’s gaze roams Trinity’s face, lingering on her lips as she speaks. “What’s that?”
They curve in a soft, teasing smile. “Any chance you could unblock me on TikTok? Please?”
Victoria’s head tips back as she laughs, easing her momentum as she leans back in, kissing Trinity softly. “Fine. Since you asked so nicely.”
“Thanks.” Trinity’s smirk is guilty as she leans back into Victoria’s lips, and the hand tugs at her hair, scratching at her scalp, and thank god Whitaker isn’t here, the ungodly sounds Victoria’s making into Trinity’s throat, and maybe she should take her shirt off–until Trinity pulls away with a soft gasp. Victoria gradually becomes aware of a beeping sound coming from the kitchen.
“Pizza’s ready,” Trinity says, kissing the corner of Victoria’s lips and standing. “Don’t want it to burn.”
Victoria nods, following Trinity to the kitchen this time, taking turns between watching Trinity take the pizza from the oven and cut slices and glancing back at the wall, watching her shadow mix with Trinity’s.
Emma was right. They do look good together.
