Chapter Text
[Sam’s POV]
Samantha Best crept through the dark of the abandoned parking lot. It was 10 past midnight on a warm June night. After hearing about this place from her friends Abby and Riley, she had to check it out.
---
Sam sat at the bar, laughing with her best friend, Abigail Brooks. She is still starstruck sometimes, Abby was one of her favourite YouTubers for over a year before she met her at this very bar a couple months back.
“What’s that look for Sam?” Abby asked jokingly.
“Just overcome with my inner fangirl again.” She chuckled at herself. “I still get starstruck by you sometimes, you were my fav urbex-Tuber for a whole year before I met you.”
Abby blushed a bit and laughed. “It’s still weird having fans. I only started recording myself in case something happened to me during my hobby, but Alan told me urbexing videos were decently popular and convinced me to upload.”
“Well, safety first. But still, I’m glad you uploaded, I wouldn’t have come up to you here if I didn’t recognize you.” She said, smiling. “Though I could live without the memory of asking you for an autograph, hehe…” She chuckled embarrassedly, then took a long sip of her basic rum and Coke.
“I found it endearing… After I got over the embarrassment.” Abby replied.
“Yeah, and cringe.” Riley, another friend, butted in jokingly from the other side of the bar.
“Hey Riles, No need to make fun of me.” Sam pouted jokingly back.
“You deserve it for that stunt.” They laughed.
“Anyway,” Sam deflects, turning towards Abby. “What was the weirdest thing you found while urbexing?”
“Oh, about 6-7 months ago, there was this one building on the edge of town, some company’s HQ that went defunct in the late 90’s or early 00’s. C&A I think it was.” She explained. “There was this one lab room with a few computers on the 3rd floor. There was no power in the building, yet a computer was still running. Probably on a hidden solar generator or something. Beside the computer was an old VR headset, something like the failed Nintendo VisualBoy. I put on the headset out of curiosity, but nothing happened except a brief flash of light.”
Riley’s eyes widened. “You put that thing on too?” They asked, surprise. “I went in there with my Ex on break when I was a tattoo artist in a shop 3 blocks away from the building, and he dared me to put the thing on.”
“Small world, huh?” Sam joked.
---
Sam found the door that both her friends told her about. It was unlocked, and she crept into the building. It took her a good 5 minutes to find the stairs to get to the 3rd floor.
“Wow, this place is eerie… I can see why Abby likes urbexing.” She muttered to herself with a smile. She exited the stairwell on the 3rd floor and started searching rooms. She found a cubicle space, 2 empty labs, and finally the right room.
She entered the lab and looked for the computer, she found it in the back of the room. Its ancient CRT monitor was on, some sort of circus themed screensaver playing across the screen. Next to the monitor was the headset she was told about. ‘Wow, this thing looks old.’
“I came here to find this thing, might as well put it on.” She said, reaching for the headset. She lifts it and puts it on her head, there was a flash of light then nothing. “Hmmm, they were right, nothing happened. Oh well, it was fun.” She said as she took the headset off and placed it back on the desk. She left shortly after. Little did she know, it actually did do something.
