Work Text:
“Of all the days it decides to rain!” Kyle scowled up at the sky and the downpour of rain as he stood under the awning leading out of the chemistry building and grabs his umbrella. Cartman walked out next to him and scowled at the rain too, he didn’t have an umbrella.
“Well, this is going to suck to walk through.” Kyle hesitated, he knows logically that he should just let the man suffer, but-
“Come here, we have to work on our project for chem,” Kyle adjusted to have the umbrella over Cartman, but frowned at it barely covering him. Cartman scooted under and wrapped an arm around Kyle and his heart quickened a beat, but he was now properly under the umbrella and it was easier to walk.
“Now I know why they always share umbrellas in romance movies,” Cartman opined mildly and Kyle scoffed.
“This isn’t a romance movie.”
“No, no it isn’t.” Cartman stated, but his arm wrapped tighter around Kyle. The walk to the dorms felt like it took days, when really the chem building was one of the closer buildings to their room. They came across a puddle that apparently Kyle didn’t see, because suddenly he was being pushed and directed to the right. Kyle flashed a look at Cartman, who looked back at him with a smirk.
“Distracted are we?” Kyle looked away and huffed in irritation, but he smiled to himself as they in sync went over a puddle.
“Distracted by what Eric?” Cartman let out a breath that Kyle wouldn’t have heard if they weren’t so close and Kyle sighed. Where were the dorms when you needed to get out of an awkward situation?
“You know, I think that’s the first time you’ve called me by my first name in all the time we have known each other.”
“Well, you never really deserved to have your first name said before,” Kyle sniped, defensive and a bit embarrassed.
“I was a kid Kyle,” however, it was a weak defense, children didn’t kill a person’s parents and feed them to him.
“Yes you were, but so was I.” Cartman stayed silent at that as they approached the dorm room.
“Can I come in?” Kyle snorted.
“Is this another romance movie thing?”
“What if I said yes?”
“I would say you’re an idiot because I already invited you in, and it’s also your room too.” Cartman gave Kyle a crooked grin and nodded and Kyle shoved his face away, face flushing.
“Stop it,” he opened up the door after unlocking it and allowed Cartman to walk inside first, then followed as he closed the umbrella and set it into a basket so the umbrella wouldn’t drip.
“Guess that bucket did come in handy,” Cartman shrugged, as he grabbed a pair of pajama pants and a shirt and started to change. Kyle began to change too, but he stopped as he was unbuttoning his pants to stare at Cartman. Finding people attractive is something Kyle found he rarely did. Nichole was because he was told she had a crush on him and he knew you needed to date a girl in school, it was just the rules. Bebe was a nightmare that lasted until she confessed she wanted to be with Wendy and that was that.
So as a whole he didn’t check people out, especially Cartman of all people. It took an ill fated fumble in Stan’s basement after they got drunk for Kyle to find out that he was gay, it also took that same attempt to know that no matter how much he wanted them to fit together, Stan wasn’t meant for him. Stan was in a relationship with Kenny now and they worked much better but the point of all of this rambling is that Cartman was attractive and Kyle didn’t know what to do with that information. Chemistry was the one class that overlapped, and with all of the clubs, classes, and parties that Cartman went to, this is the first time they got undressed in each other’s presence. When did Cartman get a firm ass, and when did the plushness around his stomach and hips become something Kyle wanted to grab instead of mock.
Romance movie indeed, what was this the Notebook? Shaking his head he finished getting undressed and into his pajamas before grabbing his chemistry book out of his back pack and sat on his bed. Cartman joined him. They discussed the various projects they could do but were arguing like they always did.
“I’m telling you, it’s a classic for a reason everyone is going to do complicated projects but ours will fulfill the assignment, give nostalgia to a bunch of people and allow us to make an explosion.”
“It’s juvenile Eric, we should do something more advanced, maybe the The Oscillating Clock. It requires intelligence and precision with the molar solutions and will look like magic.”
“You want to make a glorified lamp, with RGB lighting that your average npc has in their keyboards now.” Cartman rolled his eyes. “Ok fine if your problem is complicated then why not the Elephant toothpaste? I get my explosion but it has the more complicated reaction of hydrogen peroxide decomp.”
Kyle stopped his argument and listened, surprised at the compromise. “It would be better than half the shit the others will come up with.”
“I bet one will show up with a potato clock,” Cartman snickered and Kyle laughed with him.
“Bethany would be the one to bring it.” Cartman scoffed and got up to make them hot cocoa, pleased that it seemed Kyle agreed with his idea.
“Bold of you to assume she would even be able to make that happen,” as the water boiled he sat down next to Kyle again, who leaned against him and Cartman found himself wrapping his arm around him again.
“You are so cold Jew,” Kyle swatted his chest but didn’t move and Cartman took it upon himself to put a blanket over their laps.
“It’s because of the rain, or maybe it’s just because you are too hot.” Cartman smirked and leaned close to Kyle, who was averting his eyes and rolling them after.
“So you think I’m hot?”
“In a temperature way yes, physically-” he looked back at Cartman and his breath caught, Cartman had such a dopey expression on his face, eyes crinkled at the corners and the words caught in Kyle’s throat because how could he lie in this moment? “Yes you are hot, I suppose in a certain light.”
“I’m going to kiss you,” Cartman stated confidently and Kyle smirked.
“I would like to see you try, my last kiss with a man wasn’t all that to write home about.”
“Stan wouldn’t know how to kiss to save his life,” Cartman snorted, before leaning close. The kettle whistled loudly and both of them jumped, blushes coming across their faces. Cartman got up, grumbling and Kyle found himself laughing breathlessly, putting a hand to his warm cheeks.
‘What the hell were they getting ready to do?’ He thought to himself. The moment ruined, Cartman came to him with some hot cocoa and sat down next to him again. Kyle brought out his lap top and pulled up Youtube, pleased to find multiple movies on there. After paying for the Notebook he leaned back against the wall and settled in for a cozy, if a little awkward, rainy night.
