Chapter 1: Ashes

Chapter Text

The war ended on a Friday.

No one told Hermione that peace would be harder.

The Great Hall still smelled like smoke.

The enchanted ceiling had been repaired, but it could not erase the scorch marks left by curses or the silence that lingered between the survivors.

People whispered.

Some cried.

Some stared blankly at the plates before them, untouched.

Hermione couldn't eat.

She sat between Harry and Ron, twisting a spoon through lukewarm porridge.

Every few moments she caught herself looking toward the staff table.

Professor McGonagall was speaking with Kingsley Shacklebolt.

Their expressions were grim.

Everything was over.

So why did it feel like the world was only beginning to fall apart?

"Hermione."

Harry's voice broke through her thoughts.

"You should eat."

She looked down at the untouched food.

"I'm not hungry."

"You haven't been hungry for three days."

Ron nudged her shoulder gently.

"At least have some toast."

She managed a weak smile.

"I'll be fine."

Neither of them believed her.

Outside, Hogwarts buzzed with reconstruction.

Students packed trunks.

Families arrived.

The castle was alive again.

Hermione couldn't bear to look at it.

Fred was gone.

Remus was gone.

Tonks was gone.

Colin Creevey.

Lavender Brown.

So many names.

Too many.

She pressed a hand against the inside pocket of her robes where she'd tucked a folded list of the dead.

She'd written every name herself.

She refused to let anyone become a number.

By afternoon, Kingsley had called a meeting for the remaining members of the Order.

The room was crowded.

Exhausted faces turned toward the temporary Minister for Magic.

"We won the war," Kingsley said quietly.

"But rebuilding our world may prove even more difficult."

Hermione sat up a little straighter.

"We need new laws."

"We need justice."

"We need accountability."

His gaze swept the room.

"We need people willing to help."

Hermione's hand rose before he had even finished speaking.

Harry smiled knowingly.

Ron sighed.

"I knew you were going to do that."

She ignored him.

Kingsley smiled.

"I thought you might."

The meeting ended hours later.

Hermione remained behind, gathering scattered parchment from the table.

"You intend to work at the Ministry."

She looked up.

Kingsley stood in the doorway.

"I hadn't really thought that far."

"You have."

She smiled sheepishly.

"I suppose I have."

He nodded.

"We could use someone who refuses to accept that 'good enough' is good enough."

Hermione's smile faded.

"There are going to be people who get away with what they did."

Kingsley didn't answer.

Because they both knew she was right.

Across the castle grounds...

Draco Malfoy stood alone.

His trial had ended only that morning.

No Azkaban.

Years of probation instead.

Most people called him lucky.

Draco called it surviving.

Students walked past him without speaking.

Some glared.

Others pretended not to see him at all.

He preferred the second.

A small trunk rested beside his feet.

He had nowhere to go.

Malfoy Manor no longer felt like home.

The future stretched before him like an empty road.

For the first time in his life...

No one had told him which direction to take.

He glanced toward the castle one last time.

Across the courtyard, he spotted Hermione Granger walking down the stone steps, deep in conversation with Harry and Ron.

She laughed at something Ron said.

It was brief.

Fragile.

But real.

Draco looked away.

Some people deserved fresh starts.

Others simply learned to live with what they'd done.

He picked up his trunk and walked toward the gates.

Neither of them noticed the other.

Not yet.

Far above the castle, an owl soared into the darkening sky.

Strapped to its leg was a sealed Ministry report.

It would arrive in London before dawn.

Most people would never read it.

Most people would never know it existed.

Inside, beneath dozens of casualty lists and reconstruction plans, was a single sentence that would one day change everything.

Recommendation: Suspend the Fairbourne Audit until further notice.

Years later...

Hermione Granger would remember many things about the end of the war.

She would remember the smoke.

The grief.

The silence.

But she would never remember that report.

Because she never saw it.

And someone intended to keep it that way.
