Work Text:
Eva put her face into her hands. She had hoped that she wouldn't have to do this, that she wouldn't have to ask Grace to do this. He simply wasn't the kind of person to go on a suicide mission or even just go to space. He was very happy here on earth. But now it didn't matter anymore what she wanted or what he wanted for that matter. He had been her backup all along. She had been so glad to find out that he was coma resistant as well. There simply wasn't anyone else. There was no one who had even a fraction of Grace's knowledge about Astrophage. He had to go, if he didn't go, their chances to save even just a fraction of humanity would go down drastically.
"Please, Grace, please do the right thing. Please don't force me to do that to you," she muttered. She needed to work, she needed to focus, but right now, everything she could think about was Grace. The agony Grace must be going through. Her hopes weren't high, Eva has had enough time to get to know him. He was a coward, he would not be able to say yes to this.
When Grace entered her Trailer she knew what his answer would be, she had known before she originally asked him but now she could see it. He had made a decision and the decision was that he wouldn't agree, that he would force her to force him and she hated it. Out of all the horrible decisions she had to make over the past years, this one would haunt her the most and it wasn't even the worst one. With all the decisions, she had known, she had to make them, it was the only way, no matter if it was morally right or wrong and it hadn't really affected her. Someone had to make the decision and this someone was her.
And of course he said no, he yelled at her, threatened to sabotage the mission. So she had to even go a step further. She had expected him to surrender once he realized he would have to go if he wanted to or not. Giving him amnesia was a risk, because it could still impact his ability to work but she needed to make sure, he wouldn't try to attack Yáo and Ilyukhina or sabotage the mission in another way.
She watched, as he was dragged away from her trailer. There were tears in her eyes.
"Es tut mir leid, es tut mir so leid, Grace," she muttered under her breath. Falling back into her native language, this wasn't for him, this was for her. She turned around and went back into her trailer and sat down. She put her face into her hands again, breathed in deeply and let it out again, then she lifted her head again, wiped off her tears and returned to her work. She couldn't afford to mourn for long
