Work Text:
The park was at its most beautiful in the early afternoon. Sunlight filtered through the broad branches of old maple trees, scattering shifting patterns of gold and green across the winding paths.
A gentle breeze stirred the leaves overhead, carrying with it the scent of freshly cut grass and blooming flowers from the nearby gardens. Families laughed in the distance, joggers passed at an easy pace, and the quiet ripple of a small lake added a soothing rhythm to the peaceful atmosphere. It was exactly the kind of place Kentaro Yamada had imagined when he'd suggested a picnic.
After nearly twenty minutes of wandering the park with a wicker basket in one hand and a folded blanket tucked beneath the other arm, he finally stopped beneath a large tree that overlooked the lake.
His face lit up.
"This is it."
Natsumi Nishi looked around with a gentle smile.
"It really is perfect."
Kentaro immediately looked relieved.
"You think so?"
"I do."
The spot offered just enough shade to stay comfortable while still allowing warm sunlight to reach the edge of the blanket. The water shimmered in the distance, ducks drifted lazily near the shore, and there was enough space that they could enjoy a little privacy without feeling isolated.
He proudly spread the blanket across the grass.
"I spent all morning researching picnic spots."
Natsumi laughed softly.
"You researched them?"
"I compared ratings."
"You compared ratings."
"I looked at photos."
She giggled.
"You made a list, didn't you?"
"...Maybe."
"You absolutely made a list."
He scratched the back of his neck with an embarrassed smile.
"I wanted today to be nice."
She looked at him with unmistakable affection.
"It already is."
That simple answer was enough to make him grin.
They settled comfortably onto the blanket together, unpacking sandwiches, fruit, sparkling lemonade, and a small container of homemade cookies that Kentaro had proudly baked himself after calling his older sister Kiiko three separate times for advice.
Natsumi picked up one of the cookies.
"You made these?"
"I did."
She took a bite.
Then another.
"They're wonderful."
"I only burned the first batch."
"Only the first?"
"The second batch looked much healthier."
She laughed.
"I'm proud of you."
He placed a hand dramatically over his heart.
"That means everything."
She smiled warmly.
"You really went all out today."
"I wanted to."
He looked around the park before his attention naturally returned to her.
Then it stayed there.
Natsumi noticed almost immediately.
"What?"
"I'm looking."
"I can tell."
"I like looking at you."
"You've told me that before."
"I'll probably tell you another hundred times."
Her cheeks warmed slightly despite the years they'd spent together.
"You're making me blush."
"I know."
"You seem pleased about that."
"I am."
She laughed, shaking her head.
"I should have expected this."
He leaned back on one hand.
"I've actually been thinking about something."
"Oh?"
He smiled.
"I don't think I've properly told you something today."
"What is it?"
He met her eyes.
"I love spending ordinary days with you."
Her smile softened.
"You do?"
"I really do."
He glanced toward the lake.
"We could be traveling somewhere incredible."
She listened quietly.
"We could go somewhere expensive."
She nodded.
"But honestly..."
His eyes returned to hers.
"...if I'm with you, sitting on a picnic blanket eating sandwiches is enough to make it my favorite day."
She couldn't help smiling.
"You always know exactly what to say."
"I'm just telling you what I'm thinking."
"And what else are you thinking?"
He smiled mischievously.
"That you're distracting."
She blinked.
"I'm distracting?"
"I packed all this food."
He gestured toward the basket.
"And I've spent more time looking at you than the lunch."
She laughed.
"I don't think that's my fault."
"I didn't say it was."
He leaned a little closer.
"I think you're just very easy to admire."
She playfully nudged his shoulder.
"Flatterer."
"Guilty."
Just as Kentaro was preparing to continue his carefully planned romantic speech, his phone suddenly rang.
He sighed dramatically.
Natsumi smiled.
"You should answer."
He glanced at the screen.
Then immediately laughed.
"Oh no."
"What?"
"It's Suzuki."
Natsumi already knew what that meant.
Kentaro answered.
"Hello?"
On the other end came Suzuki's overly cheerful voice.
"Kentaro!"
"Hi, Suzuki."
"Quick question!"
"What is it?"
"Is your refrigerator running?"
Kentaro looked toward Natsumi.
Then back at his phone.
"No."
Suzuki paused.
"...What?"
"My refrigerator isn't running."
"...You were supposed to say yes."
"I didn't."
"But..."
She sounded genuinely confused.
"Why?"
"Because it's at home."
Natsumi covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.
Suzuki immediately protested.
"You ruined my prank!"
"I answered honestly."
"You weren't supposed to!"
Kentaro smiled.
"I've known you too long."
"I practiced that joke."
"You did?"
"For almost ten minutes."
"I'm honored."
"You should feel guilty."
"I feel slightly guilty."
"You should."
Natsumi couldn't stop laughing now.
Suzuki heard her.
"Natsumi!"
"Hi, Suzuki."
"Your boyfriend ruined comedy."
Natsumi smiled.
"I think he handled it pretty well."
Kentaro grinned proudly.
"I survived."
"You absolutely cheated."
Before Suzuki could launch another playful complaint, another familiar voice came through the phone.
"Told you it wouldn't work."
"Tani!"
Kentaro laughed.
Tani sighed with gentle amusement.
"Sorry about this."
Kentaro smiled.
"It's fine."
"I tried telling her you were probably busy."
"I was bored," Suzuki defended herself.
"I know," Tani replied.
Then he spoke to Kentaro again.
"I apologize on behalf of my very enthusiastic girlfriend."
Kentaro chuckled.
"Apology accepted."
Suzuki gasped dramatically.
"I don't need apologizing for."
Tani smiled.
"Yes, you do."
Natsumi laughed quietly.
"Have fun, you two."
"You too," Tani replied warmly.
"We'll let you enjoy your date."
Suzuki sighed dramatically.
"Fine."
Then she added one last sentence.
"But I'm still workshopping that prank."
Kentaro smiled.
"I believe in you."
The call ended.
Silence returned.
Kentaro slipped his phone back into his pocket.
Natsumi smiled at him.
"You handled that well."
"I've built immunity."
"I can tell."
He smiled.
"I still think she's hilarious."
"So do I."
He reached for her hand again.
"Now..."
She tilted her head.
"Where was I?"
"You were being romantic."
"Right."
He smiled warmly.
"I love you."
Her expression softened immediately.
"I know."
"I mean it."
"I know."
"I really mean it."
She laughed.
"I know, Kentaro."
"I just like saying it."
"I like hearing it."
His smile grew even brighter.
"Good."
He had barely spoken another sentence when Natsumi's own phone buzzed.
She looked at the screen.
"Honda."
Kentaro laughed.
"We're popular today."
She answered.
"Hi, Honda."
"Natsumi, quick question."
"What is it?"
"I was trying to organize girls' night."
"Oh."
"What day works for you?"
Before Natsumi could answer, Kentaro leaned slightly closer to the phone with an apologetic smile.
"Hi, Honda."
Honda laughed immediately.
"I thought I heard you."
Kentaro smiled.
"I'm terribly sorry to interrupt."
"What happened?"
"I'm currently trying to shower Natsumi with love and affection."
Honda burst into laughter.
"Of course you are."
"I was actually in the middle of a heartfelt speech."
"You poor thing."
He nodded solemnly.
"I keep getting interrupted."
Honda laughed even harder.
"You know what?"
"What?"
"I'll call back later."
"Thank you."
"I'll let the romance continue."
"We appreciate it."
Honda smiled through the phone.
"You two enjoy yourselves."
"We will."
"And Kentaro?"
"Yes?"
"Don't waste the speech."
He laughed.
"I won't."
The call ended.
Natsumi looked at him with an amused smile.
"You actually said that."
"It was true."
She laughed.
"You politely asked for uninterrupted romance."
"I did."
She shook her head fondly.
"I don't think anyone else would phrase it that way."
He smiled.
"I was trying to be respectful."
"You were."
She gently squeezed his hand.
"I thought it was sweet."
He looked relieved.
"Good."
She leaned slightly closer.
"So..."
"So?"
"You've finally gotten everyone's attention out of the way."
"I think so."
She smiled playfully.
"What was so important?"
Kentaro looked at her for a long moment before laughing softly.
"The truth?"
She nodded.
"I'm completely obsessed with your attention."
She blinked.
"My attention?"
He nodded without hesitation.
"I love talking to you."
She smiled.
"I love making you laugh."
Her smile widened.
"I love hearing your stories."
She squeezed his hand again.
"I love every ordinary moment we get together."
She looked at him with such warmth that his heart skipped a beat.
"So yes."
He laughed.
"I may be just a little obsessed."
She pretended to think.
"Just a little?"
"...Maybe more than a little."
"I thought so."
He smiled sheepishly.
She gently reached up and brushed a strand of hair away from his forehead.
"I don't mind."
"You don't?"
"I like giving you my attention."
"You do?"
She nodded.
"Because you're my favorite person to spend time with."
His face immediately turned pink.
She smiled mischievously.
"There."
"You did that on purpose."
"I did."
"You made me blush."
"I know."
She laughed softly.
"I think you're adorable."
Before he could think of a clever reply, she leaned forward and kissed him.
The kiss was warm, unhurried, and full of the easy familiarity that had grown over years together.
When they finally pulled back, Kentaro looked completely flustered.
"You always catch me off guard."
She smiled.
"I know."
He laughed quietly.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
For the rest of the afternoon, neither of their phones rang again.
They shared lunch, traded bites of dessert, watched ducks glide across the lake, and talked about everything from weekend plans to books they wanted to read and places they hoped to visit together someday.
The conversations weren't hurried.
The silences never felt awkward.
Every smile came easily.
Every laugh felt natural.
By the time the sun began to sink lower in the sky, Kentaro looked around the peaceful park before turning back to Natsumi.
"I think this turned out exactly how I hoped."
She rested her head lightly against his shoulder.
"It turned out even better."
He smiled.
"Why?"
"Because no matter how many little interruptions we had..."
She looked up at him.
"...we still ended up exactly where we wanted to be."
He slipped an arm comfortably around her shoulders.
"Together."
She nodded with a contented smile.
"Together."
And with the afternoon fading gently into evening, they lingered on the picnic blanket a little longer, savoring not only the food they had packed, but the quiet joy of simply sharing each other's company.
