London. 1890.
Blurring, fractured memories swam through Watson’s mind, as he struggled to recover his wits. There was a peculiar throbbing sensation spreading through the base of his skull, and a hot, pounding ache behind his eyeballs.
Ah. A concussion then.
He inhaled sharply, only to find his teeth biting hard upon a rough thread of cloth between his jaws. A gag? Why was he gagged? As he took his first movement, he found his arms and legs bound by ropes. To a very sturdy chair.
“Oh, he’s awake,” a woman’s voice grumbled. “What are we supposed to do with him?”
”I don’t know, Stella,” a man’s voice hissed. “It was never supposed to be like this! First the girl, and now the doctor! You promised me nobody would be hurt. ‘A harmless little kidnapping’ is what you said. And now the body’s are piling up and what have we to show for it? Nothing. No money. No ransom. The little brat won’t squeal and she’s a mess to keep. We should leave—now. Let the police find them. I—“
”Shut up and let me think!” A woman’s boot struck Watson’s leg. He winced. That hurt. She was quite strong.
Watson’s mind whirled behind his blindfold. His chest heaved, and his stomach whirled with nausea as his mind’s eye went back to the beginning.
When a tooth arrived at his flat, addressed to his wife.
