Chapter Text
Yellow tries his best. He really does. From all the country songs Asgore blasts on his rough days, to the roadshows he put on back in the days before him and Toriel divorced, Yellow should be better at the whole sheriff business. But he isn’t.
He isn’t good at the romance talk, which all cowboy’s seemed to have. He has the voice like them, but he stammers way too much and his words come out in a jumbled mess. He was lucky that Blue didn’t mind him being a klutz in that sense. He was often called ‘adorable’ in his attempts, something Yellow didn’t mind. Any compliment from Blue was treasured, of course. However, that didn’t stop the fact that cowboy’s were meant to be rugged, save the damsel and the like, yet he couldn’t seem to get the hang of either!
What’s worse is that he isn’t good at putting criminell’s in jail either, which is just what a flower of the law like him was supposed to do! After what happened with Kris and their gang, it was clear to everyone that he was a gullible fool. With one word, his mind gets flipped to blame someone else entirely without looking at the truth. Guilt hits the cowboy like a missile every time he accuses the wrong person, spiraling any and all negative thoughts towards himself.
Often times, Yellow is actually right in his judgements, but as previously stated, he’s easily persuaded. It was a pickle of a situation for poor Yellow, and once again, he found himself there.
Currently, he sat at the diner, picking at the plate of food Green had brought out for him. Orange and Aqua were playing while Seth squabbled over them, as the oldest of the three. They didn’t like being in charge of the youngest two. They should be doing something more important like strategizing, but who else would do it? Flowery was off taking care of the lighteners, Blue was practicing for his big show, Green was already there cooking for other customers, and Yellow, he was…
Well.
Yellow.
He wasn’t the most reliable. He once gave his gun to Aqua after she’d convinced him to teach her to shoot at a gun range. It ended with him tied up in front of one of the targets so she could get some ‘real practice’.
So, yet another task falls on Seth.
It was quite loud, but not loud enough to drown out Yellow’s mind. He had blamed someone for something they didn’t do, something small and insignificant, as it often was. Without finishing his plate, he stood up, and made a move to leave the cafe before his duties were called on. Orange and Aqua often made it a goal to play with him, since he was the least busy of the older flowers, but Seth seemed to have it covered for the moment. His presence wasn’t needed.
Heck, it’d probably be better for the little ones. He was a good for nothin’ criminell, causing that poor citizen so much unnecessary stress. He’d just be a bad influence on them.
‘Where are you going?’ Green signed to Yellow before he left, the concern clear on their face.
Dang it. He’d only been there a couple of minutes, and he already was causing problems by worrying poor Green!
“I’m jus’ makin’ my rounds, don’t mind lil’ ol’ me! I’ll be back in a jiffy!” the taller flower explained warmly, hiding his conflicting emotions behind his usual dopey grin. He pat the chef’s head gently, and after adjusting his belt, he made his way out. While Green’s food smelled delicious as always, he just couldn’t get himself to eat right now.
‘If I ain’t a good cowboy, what’s the point in livin?’ was a nagging thought that often popped up into Yellow’s mind. One that Yellow saw with more genuine confusion than self-hatred. It just didn’t make sense to him and the thought bothered him quite a bit.
He didn’t like thinking that way.
His one dream was to bring justice to the world by being a cowboy, yet it always felt like he just isn’t good enough for anyone, no matter how much he practices or how hard he works.
Well… maybe not anyone.
Blue.
He was probably the most intelligent of everyone in their little family, and the most caring towards Yellow. Seth would argue against that first part, but that’s how Yellow saw it. Blue knew most about love and he always seemed to have everything in order! Just his way of speaking sounded like he knew the secrets of the universe. Maybe it was just because Yellow loved listening to him though, he wasn’t sure. The cowboy always felt his worries and fears were so insignificant when the flower he loved most was near. Whenever he was with his perfect dancer, he never wanted to leave.
He couldn’t be attached to the hip with Blue all the time though, no matter how much he wishes he could. He couldn’t be any more of a bother to him than he already was.
Blue, however, would rather his dearest Yellow stay with him from dawn to dusk if it meant keeping him out of harms way. The ballerino knew well that the cowboy was going to be put in dangerous situations all the time. It was in his nature for someone so selfless and courageous. What Blue didn’t anticipate was how much harm his love seemed to want to do to himself. It was quite disturbing to him, really, even if he didn’t let it show much around the others.
The dancer found himself looking for Yellow once more. He walks into the diner where the other flowers have sat, all except his beloved sheriff, Flowery, who was currently with Asgore, and Green, who was behind the counter. Of course, Seth was too busy dealing with Orange and Aqua for any of them to have noticed Yellow at all.
‘He left to patrol,’ Green explained, ‘he didn’t eat anything or say much when he came in though. I put his leftovers in the fridge.’
Blue let out a low hum, thanked them for their help, and left in the direction Yellow had went.
He likes to have tabs on where everyone was to keep his mind in order, a habit he had developed over the past few days of their new form of existence, but those tabs mattered most to him because of Yellow and Yellow alone. There was always this deep seated dread in the back of his mind that he will loose sight of his darling and find his body moments later god knows where.
Has Yellow ever actually done anything? Thank goodness, no. Was it Yellow’s fault for feeling such a way? Absolutely not. Blue knows well Yellow couldn’t control it despite how much he may or may not try too. He also knows that since this is their first time with true mental capacities, Yellow has no idea how to handle any thoughts or emotions. It was honestly quite a shock that any of them had such a grasp, yet, here Blue was.
‘How can someone so caring be so terribly unkind to himself…?’ the dancer often found himself wondering during times like these, and he came to this conclusion. With all the violent shows he indulged in, it made the most sense Yellow’s mind went straight to harm to be the solution to any problem, despite his precious soul. He wasn’t sure his heart could bear any other reason than that.
However, the need for the truth denied his mind to be satiated with a fictional explanation. It could be a factor, certainly, but talking about it with Yellow would hopefully comfort both of them better than what their own minds could do alone.
Eventually, Blue managed to find his dearest Yellow. He was sat on a bench just a little ways away from their garden, his head in his hands, his hat tilted over his eyes, and his knee bouncing rapidly up and down. All of this was a telltale sign he was in that mindset which Blue hated most. For once in his life, however, the cowboy seemed to genuinely be thinking before doing anything rash.
That’s a good thing.
Blue approached quietly, and knelt on his knees in front of gold denim.
“Yellow, dear?”
Yellow jumped faintly, his eyes locking with Blue, who was quite literally centimeters away from him.
“G-golly, Blue! How long have ya been sitting there for?!” the cowboy exclaimed, still faintly startled by the realization that he was snuck up on by the one he could never seem take his eyes off of.
“Only a couple of moments. I didn’t mean to distress you.”
“No, no, I’m okay! Just peachy, ‘n fact!” Yellow reassured, scooting over on the bench to allow the dancer to sit next to him. If he wanted to, of course.
And, of course Blue wanted to. He got up, brushed off the loose blades of grass that had somehow found its way onto his skirt, and sat down beside the taller flower. A soft exhale escaped him as he looked forward, his perfectly poised shoulders relaxing in the way he only allows around Yellow.
There was a heavy sort of weight that filled the air, something crackling beneath the surface. It wasn’t tension exactly, for neither of them felt more like themselves than with the other, but there was something more than the usual overwhelming love.
On top of this, the expression on the graceful man’s face was one that Yellow had never seen on him before. His eyes were gazing out at their garden with this mix of seriousness and sorrow, as if he was lost in thought, yet still so aware of everything around him.
Yellow swallowed hard, his gaze shifting nervously out to the field.
“Are- are you doin’ alright? Y’re lookin’ awfully tired,” he stammered out, his voice a mess of nerves and genuine concern. While he obviously wanted to know how Blue was, as he hadn’t asked yet, he also wanted to delay the inevitable break.
Blue, however, wasn’t as generous as Yellow once thought. With another soft breath, his navy eyes glance over to the taller man next to him.
‘Even in such a state, his first priority is always me…’
“… My love… we need to talk.”
