    Summary

    Isadora knew how to survive.

She knew how to stretch a paycheck, ignore hunger and keep going long after exhaustion stopped mattering.

She just never learned how to live.

When a rainy night ends beneath the wheels of a car, she expects oblivion.

Instead, she opens her eyes in Forks, Washington, one week before Bella Swan's accursed eighteenth birthday.

The story is already written. Isadora doesn't intend to let that stop her.

    terrifying second, and then...

    "Bella!"

Paul's voice cracked across the yard like a gunshot, and then he was simply there, faster than her mind could track, catching her mid-fall with both arms, momentum carrying them both a step backward before he steadied.

For a second neither of them moved.

"Are you hurt?" His voice came out rough, urgent, already scanning her over and then, without either of them meaning it to happen, his eyes lifted and met hers directly.

Really met them. For the first time.

    Something happened.

Isa felt it before she understood it — a pull, sudden and complete, like the world had quietly, irrevocably rearranged itself around one single point, and that point was her. She watched it happen in his face too, watched his eyes go wide and stunned and helplessly, achingly soft, watched every ounce of tension bleed out of him into something that looked almost like coming home.

She would never have noticed it, she thought distantly, if she hadn't already known exactly what to look for.

Oh no. Oh no, oh no, no.

Paul's whole face broke open into the widest, most unguarded smile she'd ever seen on him, relief and disbelief and something achingly tender all tangled together, his arms still holding her steady like he never wanted to let go.

"Bella," he said, soft, wondering. "I..."

The smile died the second he actually looked at her face.

Because Isa wasn't smiling back. Isa had gone white, her whole body rigid in his arms, breath coming too fast, eyes too bright and too wide.

"No," she said, barely a whisper. "No, no, this isn't right, this can't be happening, this isn't supposed to happen, this isn't in the..."

"Bella." Paul's voice had gone careful now, uncertain, still holding her upright even as she started pulling away from him. "Hey. Talk to me."

"I ruined it." Her voice cracked, panic climbing fast and uncontrollable. "I ruined everything, Paul, this wasn't supposed to be me, this was supposed to be... I took it, I took your whole future, I'm so sorry, I'm so, so sorry!"

"Bella, stop, you didn't ruin anything."

"I have to go." She wrenched free of his hands, stumbling back several steps, chest heaving. "I have to... I'm sorry, I can't, I have to go. I need to fix this."

    "Bella, wait..."

She was already running, across the yard, past Sam and Jared frozen mid-motion with a folded table between them, past Charlie half-risen from his chair on the porch with alarm plain on his face from witnessing her fall and her subsequent panic without any reference to what could have caused it, and didn't stop, didn't look back, couldn't make herself look back.

Paul stood exactly where she'd left him, both hands still curved into the shape of where she'd been, watching her disappear into the tree line, and something in his face collapsed entirely, the joy, the relief, all of it crumbling into something raw and devastated and utterly lost, standing alone in the middle of Billy's yard with a swan she hadn't even known she was still holding, small and forgotten, in the grass at his feet.
