Work Text:
“This sucks. It’s your fault, you know?” Light was sat down on the couch wrapped in a thick blanket. Playing in the rain with L made him sick. Not the rain exactly but the cold clothes that he had to wear while waiting for the shower.
“Yes yes. I know it’s the worst thing to ever happen to you.” L smacks the back of his head with a cold towel. He then presses it into his forehead.
“Would you stop teasing me? I’m going to die in your care.” Light turns his head away from L. He’s never cared this much. Just seeing him be this… soft is making him flush.
“You haven’t yet. It’s been almost four months.”
“That’s because you’re waiting until I’m vulnerable.”
“You would think that.”
“What? Hey!” Light sits up only to be greeted with L’s hand on his chest.
“Don’t sit up suddenly. You’re going to get sick.”
“I already am, asshole.” L then gently pushes Light back down onto the couch.
“I don’t want to clean up your bodily fluids.” L walks into the kitchen to try and warm some soup for the man currently dying on his couch.
Light huffs. All he can do is sit on this couch and sleep. He can’t even be productive. He’s tried to read case files but every time, his head swims and he gets nauseous.
It’s been years since he’s gotten sick. It’s no wonder his body is seeking revenge.
Light pulls the blanket tighter due to the chills that keep crawling down his spine. The urge to just pass out and never see daylight again seems more and more appealing as time passes.
“It may not be the best but it’s nutritious.” L’s voice is calm as usual but lacks the monotone that it usually carries. L’s almost concerned for Light.
There’s no way. But, he wouldn’t kiss me if he didn’t care.
“I’ll eat.”
“Good.”
Light sits up slowly and takes the blow of soup that he was offered. Lifting the spoon, he took a small sip of the soup.
“What did you do to this soup?!” Light coughs. How did he manage to burn soup. If it wasn’t for Watari, this man would’ve starved.
“Warmed it up.”
“With a flamethrower? How did you burn soup?!” Light sets the soup onto the coffee table. He can’t stomach that… poison.
Light flops back down onto the couch and throws the blanket over his head. He should just sleep. No better medicine than that.
My eyes feel heavy…
Light stirs and rolls onto his other side. That’s when he is greeted with the sight of L. His hair is messier than it was before. Was he resting on the couch too?
“You’re awake.”
“Good job noticing genius.”
Light tries to pull the blanket back over his head but L’s hand stops him.
“I informed Watari that you were sick and he dropped some soup off. Please eat some of it.” L helps Light sit up. There’s a slight shine in his eyes. Almost as if he’s scared to remove Light from his sight.
Light takes the soup that Watari made and takes small sips. It’s so much better than L’s attempt at it. The broth is warm and the chicken is soaked in the perfect amount in the broth. As it should be.
L gets up from the couch and returns with some medicine and a glass of water. Light hesitantly takes the medicine. Not before staring L down in a challenging way.
After swallowing the pills, he reached over to the radio that sits on the end table. The silence is killing him.
A station that plays classic songs from the 50s and 60s is on and Light doesn’t change it. Reminds him of home, in an odd way.
That’s when he feels L sit right next to him.
“May I sit with you?”
“Since you already are, why not?” Light pulls L’s feet under the blanket, if only just to share his bodyheat.
Light sways between asleep and barely awake.
During the time that he’s barely conscious enough to take a drink of water, he can see L reading a book. Didn’t know he did that.
He dozes off again and wakes up the song that is met with memories of his childhood.
“What is it? You tensed up. Are you going to be sick?”
“When I was younger, my father would put this song on. He would then saunter off to the kitchen and dance with my mother. He’d gently sing in her ear as they bump into the dining table. Sayu and I would watch from the couch. When I was older, they told me it was their first dance song.”
“Do you want to dance?”
“What?”
“Do you want to dance?”
“I heard you the first time,” Light raises an eyebrow, not believing what he is hearing. “Sure.”
L helps him stand up and he pushes the coffee table over so they have some room. It’s awkward at first. L doesn’t know how and Light is going off the memories he has off his father.
They easily fall into a rhythm. Mirroring how they work together. It’s got its rough patches but always is synced with the other man.
Light squeezes L’s shoulder and his breath catches as he can clearly see the irises of L’s eyes. A grey-blue. Specks of dark blue surround the pupils.
That’s when he loses his balance and pulls them both down onto the couch. Light is laying against the couch with L on his chest.
“Falling for me again?”
“Oh shut up!”
Light lowers his arms to rest against L’s waist. He feels L pull the blanket over them both.
The radio is still playing music and the kitchen lights are on. The rain patters on outside. It hasn’t stopped since yesterday afternoon.
Light nuzzles his nose into L’s neck and sighs. He could be like this every day. He’d live a happy life.
Maybe being sick isn’t all that bad.
