Shane took the call on speakerphone from the hospital, Ilya too busy being a patient to participate, Claudia and Bev at the kitchen island in Ottawa, and Paula dialed in too, technically retired for years by then but present anyway, the way she was present for anything important that touched this family, because retirement had never once stopped her from showing up for her family when it mattered. Paula's voice on the phone, the deciding one, in the end, the practical, steady one that cut through everyone else's instinct to simply relocate the whole family and worry about logistics later.
"Well," she said, taking one look at Ilya; he was thinner, tired, unmistakably himself despite it, before he'd even managed a greeting. "You look terrible. Good terrible. Like you’ve been in quite a fight." She said it the way she said most things, brisk and entirely without sentiment, which was, everyone in the room understood by now, exactly how she loved people. "Girls, coats, please. Your father's earned a night of rest and relaxation."
He held on longer than the greeting strictly required, both arms around Ilya properly, face pressed into his shoulder, breathing him in the way he hadn't been able to for five weeks: no gown, no gloves, no glass, just skin and the familiar shape of him, thinner than it used to be but still unmistakably his, and Shane felt something in his chest give way that he'd been bottling up for over a month, a sound escaping him that was not quite a laugh and not quite a sob, just relief, plain and enormous.
