Work Text:
Judy frowned, and flicked the goggles down over her eyes, suddenly feeling a long way from home. The familiar amber glow of the setting sun felt vaguely threatening, a fire on the horizon that she just couldn’t stamp out.
“Ready?”
Preston’s gentle voice startled her out of her thoughts, his ever present care mingled with a weight she didn’t think she’d be able to carry for even a second.
He was stood beside her, on the bow of the ridiculous ship they called The Minuteman. She wasn’t exactly a bad vessel, if a bit rickety, and Valentine had reported rust on the hull. It was the wings that worried Judy. The Castle had never been airborne, but, since the Institute, times had to change. An old ship, long forgotten, from the early days of steam engines and metallic hulls was discovered, the “treasure” of Jamaica Plains.
Preston had fallen in love, then and there. Judy would admit that she was a beauty.
But, she’d rather have her feet on the ground. If it wasn’t for the Cog-Queen, they’d be there.
They’d get the Castle back. One day. When the Minutemen were more than 4 people and a dream. When there were too many of them for a flying machine, but enough to truly live.
Judy, for one, couldn’t wait.
