Boyfriends, A-Holes & Coffee

Summary:

Quackity is a Hybrid in a world where that's still a new concept. Not everyone is accepting. But he thankfully has people beside him to back him up and make him feel loved.

Notes:

Gosh this feels so rushed I'm so sorrryyyyyy but I hope you enjoy it anyway!! And dw there is more to come! This was simply a warm up! This is basically just a snippet of a fic set in the exact same setting. Like a modern setting with hybrids so I just decided to make a little oneshot with it.

Work Text:

Quackity lets out a sigh as he stands behind the wooden counter of the cafe he currently worked at. He glanced over at the clock on the wall to see that it was 8:48 PM. Finally! Just 12 more minutes until they closed. He lets out a yawn while stretching his arms above his head before dropping them with a sigh. He was so ready to go home.

It had been a long day and was unusually busy for a Wednesday and Quackity was drained, physically and emotionally. It gets exhausting having to put up his customer service smile and voice while also dealing with rude and annoying customers, not to mention the amount of looks and somewhat invasive questions about the small pair of golden wings protruding from his back.

All he wanted was to go home and snuggle up with his boyfriend for the rest of the night.

"You did really well today, Quackity!" His boss's voice suddenly cuts through the silence and he looks over to see her walking out from the back room, sleeves still rolled up from doing the dishes.

The good thing about the place he works at is that his store manager is a Hybrid just like him, sporting curled ram horns and a small sheep tail, which made him feel less out of place. It also meant she didn't tolerate any discrimination from customers which is the whole reason he chooses to stay at this place. Plus, the pay is decent.

A small smile forms on Quackity's face despite feeling exhausted. "Thanks, Puffy. But I'm just ready to go home now." He says with a light chuckle, earning a laugh from Puffy.

"No worries, I get it! Just ten more minutes and we can start closing!" She explains before disappearing into the back once more. The bell above the door lets out a gentle ring, alerting Quackity of a customer. He holds back a tired sigh as he turns around to face the customer only to relax once he sees the familiar face.

"Wow, you look dead!" Wilbur points out with a grin as he approaches the front counter. Quackity rolls his eyes and crosses his arms.

"Yeah, well, customer service does that to you."

Wilbur reaches over the counter and takes one of Quackity's hands, kissing the back of it and relishing in the way his boyfriend blushes at it. "Well, just a few more minutes and then it'll just be you, me, and our couch."

Quackity rolls his eyes but doesn't pull his hand away from Wilbur's grasp. "That poor couch is always third wheeling. We might need to get another couch so that it can be a double date situation."

Wilbur barks out a laugh. "Yeah, as if our box sized apartment could fit another couch."

Quackity was about to respond until the bell is heard once more and he looks over to see another customer come in, an older man who looked like he just got off work. Wilbur pulls his hand away and winks at Quackity before he walks away to sit at one of the tables to wait.

Wilbur's visit had rejuvenated Quacktiy a bit and he finds it less forceful as he smiles kindly at the older man. "Welcome in, sir! Just let me know when you are ready to order."

The man looked at Quackity weirdly but before Quackity could ask what was wrong the man spoke first.

"They're really having someone like you handle my coffee?"

His tone was sharp and sounded almost annoyed, or disgusted. Wilbur's head looks up from his phone as he looks over with wide eyes, constantly looking between the man and Quackity. Quackity himself blinks a couple of times in shock and confusion.

"Uhm, I'm sorry?"

"You heard me! I don't want some animals to prepare my drink!" The man's tone was much harsher now as he made it very clear what he meant. Wilbur's eyebrows furrowed as he watched the interaction, sitting up straighter than he originally was.

Quackity's wings twitch behind him and he does his best to not flare them in anger. He opens his mouth to respond but Wilbur beats him to it.

"You're wrong, sir."

The two of them look over at Wilbur in surprise, but the man's face contorts back to anger after a few seconds. "Excuse me?"

"I said, you are wrong." Wilbur says louder as he stands up and walks over. "There are no animals here. There shouldn't be any issues."

The man looks offended as if Wilbur insulted him. "Why is it any of your business?"

"Because you're being a douchebag for no reason."

"Look at him!" The man exclaims as he gestures to Quackity. "There's your reason!"

"The fact that he's a Hybrid shouldn't be an issue!" Wilbur claims.

Before things could escalate, Puffy comes back out with a confused expression. "What is going on out here?"

Everyone turns their attention to her and the man just seemed to get even more upset. "Seriously?? Is this entire establishment run by animals?!"

Puffy looked shocked for a brief moment before her face contorts to something stern. "I suggest you leave, sir. You're clearly not welcomed here."

The man huffs. "Fine! Anything to get away from freaks like you!" He says angrily before he storms out of the store. Puffy locks the door behind him and flips the 'Open' sign to 'Closed' before she lets out a sigh, turning back to the other two.

"I'm so sorry about that, Quackity. Are you okay?" She asks as her face was now that of concern. Quackity manages a smile. "Yeah, I'm fine. Thanks to the two of you."

Puffy smiles and nods. "Of course! And next time, don't be afraid to tell people like that off! I promise you won't get in trouble with me."

Quackity nods. "Thanks."

They went about their night after that, trying to just forget about the whole interaction while Puffy and Quackity cleaned up and Wilbur provided them with entertainment while they did so.

About an hour later they were finally done cleaning up so they left the store and Quackity and Puffy said their goodbyes before heading their separate ways.

As Wilbur and Quackity make their way across the parking lot to Wilbur's car, Quackity speaks up.

"Thanks by the way."

Wilbur looks over. "For what?"

"For standing up for me to that guy. I know it's not easy dating a Hybrid…" Quackity explains while looking down at the ground. Wilbur stops and lifts Quackity's head with his hand, looking at him with a gentle smile.

"It's no trouble at all. You know I love you too much to let you go. Besides, people like that just need to learn to stop being jerks."

Quackity smiles and the two hug for a moment before Quackity pulls back with a sigh. "With that out of the way, can we please go home?"

Wilbur laughs and slips his hand into Quackity's.

"Anything for you, Q."

Quackity's wings lightly flutter at the nickname and the two get into the truck and drive away together.
