Click, click, click Nico was playing with toy dinosaurs, bouncing them across the table.
Their preschool classroom was bright and full of every toy he could imagine—well, not quite. He wanted a Deinonychus, but they didn’t have any. He told his teacher he would bring his tomorrow.
Clack clack clack! One fell over while he was making them run. Oh no!
When trying to pick it up, he knocked another, then another—and down to the floor they went, clattering to the carpet.
His eyes went wide and he dove down to pick them up quickly, not wanting any of them to get stolen.
“Nico!” A boy his age, with bright blond curls and similarly bright blue eyes was running over. He had another toy dino in his hands.
Will had his bright purple shoes on that lit up when he stomped. They were so cool. Nico wanted a pair like his.
Nico raised a shy hand in a wave, dark waves falling in front of his eyes. His teachers always asked if he wanted to cut it, but he liked it long.
“Can I help you pick it up?” Will asked, already knelt on the floor but he wasn’t touching them yet.
Nico nodded quickly. “Yes please.” His voice was tiny and soft, but Will didn’t seem to mind.
Soon they were all picked up. “Can I play?” Will asked.
Nico nodded again, handing him the Stegosaurus. “You can have this one.”
Will gasped, and immediately got to play.
“ROAAAARRR!!!” He fisted the dinosaur in his hands, chasing the pile of dinosaurs they just picked up.
Nico stopped the boy with his hands. He took the stegosaurus back and hugged it to his chest. “No. That’s wrong.” He said.
Will looked confused. He twisted his fingers around. “But dinosaurs eat other dinosaurs?”
“No.” Nico corrected, firm in his dinosaur knowledge. “The stegosaurus is an herbivibor.”
Will looked like Nico has just told him rocket science. “What’s an herbivibor?”
He separated them in piles, then pointed to one. “Those ones eat plants. Those ones eat meat. Those ones eat both.”
“Woah!” Will gasped again. “Wait, I ate chicken and carrots last night and mama said carrots are a plant. Does that mean we eat both?”
“Humans are omi… Omni… ominv…”
He stomped his foot, crossing his arms. He couldn’t say the word right. He didn’t think he said omnivore right either, when Will said it too it sounded all wrong.
“Wait!” Will seemed to have an idea spring. “We should get the plant eaties and go outside!”
Nico was excited too. “They can eat the grass!”
Will grabbed one from the plant pile and waited until Nico grabbed one too, taking ahold of his hand and leading them outside.
It was their play time, and they had two teachers so they could play inside or outside! There was a door right there!
“C’mon c’mon!” Will ran faster, a little taller than Nico, a little faster.
Nico tripped in the rubbery stuff, skidding to a stop. He dropped the dinosaur and crawled closer immediately, checking to make sure the paint was okay.
“Nico!” Will gasped again, running back. Nico’s knee was a bit scraped up.
“I’m ok.” Nico stood up. “It doesn’t hurt.”
“But you fell!” Will said, as if it were that he’d fallen from the head of a Patagotitan.
Nico said as much.
“Woah.” Will said again. “That’s a big word.”
“It’s a dinosaur.”
“You know a lot of dinosaurs.”
“My mama lets me watch dinosaur YouTube videos.”
“Cool! Anyway wanna go eat grass now?”
Nico nodded and sprinted off, holding onto Will’s hand again. He didn’t go faster than Nico’s little legs this time.
“Nom nom nom!” Will said, dropping to the grass. He made his dinosaur dig his head in the dirt.
Nico giggled. “No, they don’t eat like that!”
“Well mine does!”
That was wrong. But Nico wanted to be nice. “Oh, okay.”
He made his dinosaur eat the right way.
After ten seconds of earnest plant eating, Will gasped. “Nico!”
“What!?” Nico said, the same enthusiasm growing in his voice.
“We should have a dino wedding.”
“But dinos don’t have weddings.”
“But our dinos are special!”
That did sound kind of fun. “Let’s go get them!”
Five whole minutes of setting up later, they’d gotten all of the other dinosaurs and lined them up. They made the T-Rex promise not to eat them.
Will sang wedding music while Nico carefully walked them down the ‘aisle’.
“I now make you… husband and! Wait!”
Nico was sitting cross legged, ready to make his dinosaur kiss Will’s. “What?”
“Is your dinosaur a boy or girl dinosaur?”
“Mines a boy dinosaur.”
“Can two boy dinosaurs get married?”
Nico shrugged. “I think so?”
“Okay!”
Will got his T-Rex voice back. “I now make you… husband and husband! Kiss!”
The dinosaurs booped noses. They made all the dinosaurs in the audience cheer.
“Yay!” Will sang, holding his dinosaur up and dancing around. “Nico!”
“What?”
“Should we get married now?”
Nico blinked, but bounced on his toes. “Okay!”
They spread the dinosaurs wider so they could walk in the middle. The T-Rex was still making them married.
Will was being his husband and the T-Rex.
They didn’t know who was supposed to walk down the aisle since they were both boys so they just walked together.
“I now make you husband and husband! Kis- wait!”
This time, Nico didn’t have to ask what. “Can we kiss?”
Will shrugged, mirroring Nico’s earlier action. “I guess?”
Nico nodded. He grabbed Will’s hands like he saw people do in those movies his mama watched.
Will let go of one hand to make the dinosaur talk again. “You may now kiss!”
They leaned in and puckered their lips, just barely touching them together.
“YAY!” Will sprang again, but this time held onto Nico’s hands and made him leap too.
Nico was giggling freely, bouncing with the curly haired boy.
“So, class, what did you play during recess?”
“Me and Nico are married!”
