At this, Dark leaned over and kissed his shoulder, resting his mouth, pausing a moment. Then, Dark whispered into the material of Link's tunic, asking, "And what are you meant to do? After you've done what you need to do, how do you intend to be?"

Link is a miserable, lonely hero destined to save the land of Hyrule on his own, that is, until he spares a dark figure meant to destroy him, but made in his exact likeness. After growing fond of his shadow more than he ever thought possible, Link sees his future ahead of him for the first time in his life—which is crushed the moment his journey is over and Princess Zelda wants to send Link back in time, so he may reclaim his lost childhood. However, Link only wants to reclaim the feelings he experienced as a man and person, with his shadow by his side.
