God this Kira investigation was driving Light insane! Not only WAS he Kira, but he ALSO had to work on his own case, investigating himself with the one person whose name he wanted printed forever onto his death note.
L ... (also, who the fuck names themself L, you literally could've chosen any other letter in the alphabet, like X, now that was a good one.)
The man was an enigma, a sweet enthusiast, and above all the self-proclaimed "greatest detective in the world."
L was the first and foremost thing causing the aching migraine that irritated Light to no end. With the stupid handcuffs and the blunt demands, Light was going to actually write his own name in the death note, if he ever had to go sweet shopping with Watari again.
Secondly, it would have to be Misa who was the second annoyance. She attached herself to Light like a starfish the second they became within 5 meters of each other, and acted clingy and lovesick when she had to leave for a photo shoot. The girl just couldn't take a hint (Not that Light was complaining it just made her easier to manipulate) but overall Light had no interest in her, she was just a pawn in his game to conquer the world.
The third annoyance would be Matsuda, technically Matsuda hadn't done anything wrong ... but his face was just so ANNOYING. One look at Matsuda's stupid irritating face would drive Light up the wall.
This was SERIOUS, people were DYING and all Matsuda could do was stand their looking stupid and offering dumb comments that were doing nothing but feeding Light's growing migraine.
But back to L, because if Light ever wanted some peace of mind he was going to have to tackle the source of his problems .... which was the raven-haired man suspiciously handcuffed to him.
At that very moment they were heading to one of L's favorite cafes, one infamously known for its sugar cakes and strawberry parfaits. This was supposed to be their quick break before getting back to the investigation unfortunately it didn't feel like a break at all ... more like a hassle.
L stringed him along with the handcuffs which was totally embarrassing because they were in PUBLIC.
Although it was like 3AM in the morning and L insisted no one would see them. Light still felt himself turning slightly red, as if anyone happened to look out their window, they'd think were some kinky gay couple he thought.
Finally, they arrived at the cafe and Light took one look at the place and decided he hated it.
It was quiet and secluded, but it was pink, so very pink. It looked straight out of a shoujo manga and by that he meant it looked cheap, cringeworthy and romantic.
It looked as if valentine's day and cupid had thrown up all over the place and even though it was well into December and valentine's day was in February.
Light turned to L to ask him if this was a joke, when he noticed that the ravenette stood out like a sore thumb here. The place was the complete opposite of him.
L was unruly and unkempt with dark hair cascading down his shoulders (Light actually would've liked to see him with his hair wet) and dark circles under his eyes, not to mention his atrocious posture.
His depressing demeanour and goth aura definitely was a contrast to the preppy bright atmosphere of the cafe. (Not gonna lie Light lowkey liked L's vibe better.)
L checked them in and then lead Light across the floor, to a secluded booth near the back of the cafe.
They sat down on the seats, as an awkward silence fell over them. Well, what were they supposed to talk about?
This would be the first time they would talk to each other without Kira being involved, because they swore, they would not let Kira corrupt their break, (even though L was quite literally sitting across from Kira).
L sat across from him in his 'usual' sitting position. Light couldn't fathom why the other man sat like that. Of course he had asked, but L had always brushed it under the mat saying it was to increase his deductive abilities or something. Pfttttt, Light sat perfectly normal and had great deductive abilities. It was clear who the superior one was in this partnership.
But it was kind of funny.
L with his knee's tucked up to his chest, looking a little claustrophobic as the table pushed against his legs. He looked cramped but also perfectly fine at the same time. (His body definitely had adapted to sit like that) he looked like a crow on a perch.
The image of L as an oversized ugly crow came into Light's superior mind and made him grin to himself. The world's greatest detective was ridiculous at times.
Snapping Light out of his stupor, L commented "Well Light ... Are you going to order?". It was then he realised the coquette waitress behind him dressed in a frilly pink skirt and more bows than anyone could need in a lifetime.
"Ah yes-" he muttered quickly looking at the menu, he should've been looking at before (instead of admiring a certain someone...).
When he looked down at the menu, he realised two things: The cafe items were ridiculous and he was never coming here again.
It only had desserts and drinks on the menu, but they all had the most cringe names anyone could muster up. (reminder to never let L choose the cafe again)
For food there was, The I love you Apple pie, the baby girl brownies, the daisuki dine in special, the mi amor muffins and the kawaii cutie cookie bundle.
For drinks there was, lovey lime shake, the only one for me orange shake and cutie pie coffee pot.
Light actually was going to write his own name in the death note.
He tried giving L a look across the table that meant let's get the fuck outta here. But the man seemed genuinely interested in the menu choices. Of course he was. Of course.
Wait one fucking moment...
Light’s world seemed to stop. It was finally making sense to him now, L wouldn't willingly go to this cafe, no sane person would.
This was all a test....
A TEST TO SEE IF HE WAS KIRA.
Of course it was, it had to be. Oh L nearly got him, thank God he came to his senses. L probably thought Kira's pride would be too big to order from a place like this, but he was the fool since Light knew his plan.
And Light would order from this cafe to prove him wrong and keep his identity a secret from the detective. God he was so smart.
So, without further a do Light turned to the waitress and said with a clinical smile, "I'll have the mi amor muffin and the lovey lime shake!" She nodded writing things down on her notebook (hah notebook) and then she turned to L.
Light also turned to L expecting to see just the slightest hint of shock on this man's face but instead L looked as plain as ever. With his stupid smokey eyebags that underlined his analytical eyes and his stupid pale skin that framed his stupid dumb tired expression.
Damn it! Light screamed internally. This guy was good.
L turned to the waitress and ordered the daisuki dine in special and the cutie pie coffee pot. She thanked them both then hurried back to the kitchen to cook up some questionable dishes.
Light and L were alone now, and Light was determined not to let the detective get to him.
"Well Light," L stared at him from across the table "Did you like the menu choices?"
ARGHH! Of course, he probably knew Light hated the menu choices, so he was faking innocence and asking questions solely to provoke Light. Well two can play at this game.
"Hmm well to be honest, it's not really my thing. I'm not that big on sweets, I’m more of a spicy guy if you know what I mean."
Perfect! That comment probably distracted him! The spice thing probably threw him off and it's probably making him angry.
He looked over the table and was met with a slightly pink L. Hah he was so angry he was turning red. Now Light just had to keep going.
"Well I never knew you were into that stuff Light, mind telling me what else your into." He leant forward, which Light didn’t know was possible in his current position.
"hmm well if you must know, I've taken quite a liken to reading books on psychology recently."
"Psychology? Why’s that? so you can better understand the mind of Kira?"
"Yes, that’s one reason, but I also am equally interested in discovering how your mind works." Light leant forward now as he gestured to the man in front of him, who looked slightly confused. Perfect.
“My mind? How come?"
"Well it’s not often you get to pick the brain of Japan’s greatest detective. What national secrets are you hiding in that head?" He grinned.
"Well if you want to take a look.. I suppose I’m not opposed to giving you head whenever you’d like?"
Wait. What did he just say.
“Sorry could you just repeat that, I think I misheard you Ryuzaki haha…”
“Oh it’s no matter, I just said I would give you my head to look through if you wanted too…”
Ok. So he would give me his head, but not his name. God this guy was strange.
"Anyway as I was saying-“
"Hello sirs! Your food is ready, so let me serve you with a dose of love magic"
Already? well she was quick. But Light had definitely made progress with that weird conversation, he didn’t really have a vested interest in psychology books but L would spend hours trying to analyze it when it really had nothing to do with anything. Perfect.
L was still slightly red from their conversation earlier; the frustration was clearly visible on his face.
The waitress presented their food and the pair dug in.
Light was pleasantly surprised by the taste of the food, it was delicious! The best he'd ever had! It wasn’t even overpoweringly sweet like he thought it’d be!
Ok so maybe he understood why L chose this restaurant.
Before he knew it, his plate was empty, and his drink finished. With nothing left to do he watched as L devoured his lovey Dovey meal.
He was a lethargic eater taking his time to savor every bite. It was kind of cute how his tongue poked out to lick the icing of his cupcake, and then he engulfed the whole thing in one bite. The habit was weird, but he knew by now L was a weird guy.
A lot of L's habits Light found funny, how he spun around on his chair when talking to Matsuda, how his eyes softened when talking to Watari, how he had a questionable close friendship with Misa, how he clasped his hands together when making a point, how he always had tons of sugar cubes in his coffee, how he hadn't died of diabetes yet etc... Light could go on forever.
Of course, he only noticed these habits because he was analyzing the enemy, why else would he notice these infuriating habits of L's.
When L had finished his meal, they settled into a comfortable conversation, about anyone and anything. They talked about how annoying Matsuda was, the silly names of the menu items, sports they followed (Note to self: L was a golf fan, maybe he could take him out there… and push him down a hill of course), Misa's modelling, The police agency, deduction games and their favourite foods (Note to self: L really liked cake, maybe he could buy him some… then poison it of course).
Light wasn't going to lie, it was fun. So fun he forgot he might've been getting psychoanalysed as they spoke. Oh well, the conversation flowed so easily he wasn't going to mess it up and besides this break was starting to finally feel like a break.
This was the longest they'd ever talked to each other without Kira being mentioned once. Light couldn't count how many times he laughed; L was funny when he wanted to be. Light loved listening to L's epic retellings of his past cases where he solved the mystery yet again, and L in return loved listening to Light's stories of high school and tennis competitions.
They were both so engaged in each other's lives they hadn't noticed the time, and before they knew it, they were kicked out of the cafe by a now angry looking coquette maid who called them loiterers.
Laughing as they ran out the front door thanking her for the food, and running out into broad daylight because it was way past 3am now and the city had woken up.
Mind you they still were connected by the chains, but Light didn't mind one bit. He had just had more fun with L than anyone else in his entire life, the conversation had just felt so meaningful, and it was like they could read each other's mind, and it was hard to find someone who could do that when you were thinking twenty steps ahead of everyone.
For once Light wished L wasn't his enemy in this game they were playing. If somehow, they could give up their roles of Kira and the world's greatest detective, would they? And just lead normal lives with each other would he, do it?
It was a shame god had dealt him these cards because in another life, Light believed him and L might've been great friends even more maybe.
L snapped Light out of his daydreaming when he asked, "So….um- Did you enjoy the date?"
Date...
Date...
DATE!!
THAT WAS A DATE!
Light thought that was just a break from their investigation, but L had really asked him out on a date. WHEN?!
Was this a strategy to see if he was Kira? Or was the dark handsome detective actually genuine with pure intentions? OH GOD he was confusing Light!
Looking back on the 'date' Light realized things he hadn't noticed before like L blushing and their casual flirting in the conversation, that he had previously just brushed off as friendly banter. Wow... he was not very perceptive today was he.
The fact L was romantically interested in Light put his perspective of L into a whole new um… well light. Light was never strictly into women ... and there was no way he would break the detective's heart because he might never get the information he needed. hmmmm. What to do?…
L still looked at Light expectantly, waiting for a prolonged answer.
Then Light decided.
He grabbed L's handcuffed hand in his own and announced, "Yes I enjoyed myself. So, I assume I'll be seeing you for another one."
L smiled turning a little pink, "I certainly wouldn't be opposed to it."
"Great! And let me choose the place next time okay."
L shoved him playfully. "Ok, just letting you know by the way I really hope you're not Kira because that would complicate things dearly."
Light grinned "Would you really go out with Kira now?"
"No, I probably wouldn't." L mused.
Light smirked to himself; L was a dirty liar.
And so, they walked off back to headquarters, hand in hand. Light convinced he was doing this to analyze the enemy and L just happy to experience this moment.
The end.
