Onion and garlic smells linger in the room long after dinner is over, a trademark of Jason’s fabulous cooking.
They never got around to Sitcom Night this Friday, Jason had swatted the remote out of his hands and pressed his shoulders into the couch where the avian could fully lay on top of him, pressing one ear to Arsenal’s heartbeat.
It’s here that Roy is still stuck under what feels like a mountain but is actually his boyfriend. Jason's fallen asleep, somehow feeling safe enough in Roy’s arms to allow himself to drift off. It’s a new thing, but it’s great, if you ask the archer.
Roy takes a chance, running a slow hand through Jason’s unbelievably soft feathers. They’re gorgeous, sunset orange light illuminating the golden and white that speckles the woodsy brown.
Jason’s gorgeous, with his face slightly smushed against Roy’s chest as he naps, wings loosely folded over them both. It’s a comforting weight, protecting and caring in a way only Jason can manage.
It’s quiet like a campfire after you’ve just finished laughing your ass off and now everyone’s catching their breath. It’s quiet like home, because somehow, in the precious moments between the fighting and craziness and half-thought-out schemes this apartment has become just that.
Jason shifts a bit, his brow furrowing from whatever dream he’s having— a sight too familiar to the pair, even if the night terrors have dwindled for both.
Roy places a comforting hand to the crown of Jason’s head, gently tangling his fingers in the silky curls he’s finally convinced his boyfriend to grow out.
A sigh tickles Roy’s chin as Jay melts under the touch, the tension in his spine bleeding away. His wings rustle, going limp in a way Roy’s never seen before.
He fights the urge to snort. ‘dangerous crime boss’, yeah right. Jason’s 300lbs of teddy bear. It’s a strangely endearing thought, and Roy huffs in amusement as he trails his fingers down the back of his neck.
He pauses as his fingertips brush over something oddly soft on the nape of his boyfriend’s neck. Tilting his head for a better look, Roy realizes that it’s feathers.
Hair gives way to downy golden-brown plumage that trails down the back of his neck, reflexively flexing under his touch.
Jason makes a little chirp, deep in his chest. This time, Roy really does snort— amused but affectionate.
A grunt from Jason makes him actually chuckle.
“You still sleeping, Jaybird?”
Jay turns his head without picking it up, meeting Roy’s eyes with his own jewel-like green.
“N’ anymore. Y’r too loud.”
Roy means to yawn theatrically, but it comes out real. Jason’s leaked his sleepiness everywhere, and he’s infected Roy. He tells his boyfriend as such.
Jason laughs sleepily, deep and gruff. It does things to Roy’s chest.
“M’kay.” Jason says dryly.
The man slowly rolls off, hitting the floor and turning back to where Roy is still laying on the couch. It’s quiet for a moment as Jason looks him over.
“Like what you see- oof,” Roy's snark is cut off by Jason leaning over and lifting him off the couch.
The avian moves easily towards their bedroom, unburdened by the fully grown man in his (thick) arms.
Heat rises up his neck as Jason maneuvers Roy out of the way so he can reach the doorknob.
The redhead sighs, accepting his fate as Jay cradles him mostly one-armed. “Do I even weigh anything to you?”
Jason blinks down at him sleepily. “Like… holding’ a couple a’ grapes.”
Roy gapes up at his boyfriend while the man gently sets him down on the bed.
“Did you just reference something other than Jane Austen?”
Jay grunts like an old man as he settles down next to Roy, stretching a wing and an arm out to drape across the archer’s body.
“I knew you liked sitcom night!” Roy cheers.
Jason shushes him, “Sleep now. Be quiet.”
The archer hums in thought, “You’re still a huge nerd even if you like my shows.”
Emerald green light dusts Jay’s cheekbones as he lifts his head to give his boyfriend a squinty glare.
“Baby. Roy. I love you. But I need to go to sleep.”
Roy's heart skips a beat. ‘I Love You’s’ are not given freely when it comes to Jason. Or at least, not usually.
“That’s not nice, Jaybird. You gotta mean it.” It’s teasing, and Jay knows it.
The ribbing earns Roy a heavy hand flopping over and smacking against his mouth, effectively shutting him up.
“I always mean it, asshole. Now shut the hell up.”
Roy darts his tongue out and Jay recoils. It doesn’t last long though, because he reaches back over and hauls the redhead over, manhandling him onto his outstretched wing and tucking him against his chest with the other. Jason wraps both his arms around Roy’s torso and buries his face in his messy red locks.
Arsenal is well and truly blushing now.
“You know I ain’t going anywhere, right?”
Jason rumbles against his back, soft and low, “I know.”
Roy’s breath hitches. He attempts to roll over, Jay reluctantly loosening his hold to allow Roy to turn and face him.
The avian’s eyes are mostly closed as he watches Arsenal move. Roy reaches a tentative hand over his partner’s shoulder. Jason tracks the movement like he’s barely aware of it.
Roy places a cautious hand into the feathers on Jason’s neck and starts slowly petting the down, trailing his fingers from where the hair gives way to feather down to where they disappear beneath his shirt.
Jason sighs happily and tilts his head to give Roy a better angle, his eyes fluttering fully closed.
The archer wonders what he did to deserve softness like this.
