Summary:

Chenford + based on the line Tim wouldn’t approve Lucy’s overtime time so she handed it over to Smitty (pre 804)

I hope you enjoy! ✨🗡️

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Hey,” Lucy says stepping into Tim’s office. He looks up from where he is packing his bag. “I have to work late. I got a case—”

“No.” Tim says and he says it without hesitation.

“Excuse me?” Lucy says stepping more into his office. It wasn’t often that Tim said no to her especially at home. He was to be fair a little stricter at work. “I need—”

“I’m not approving the overtime. You have been working so much lately. Let someone else do it.”

“Tim I just—” She starts but Tim shakes his head as he walks past her. “I’ll see you at home babe.”

Lucy is silent as she watches him leave the office.

Great.

He just put her in a pickle whether he knew it or not.

(He probably did, and it was sweet that he wanted her home and not at work).

Lucy steps out of Tim’s office and looks around. She spots one of the only officers still hanging around.

“Hey Smitty!” She calls and hurries over to him. In the back of her mind, she knows this is a bad idea. Alarms are going off in her head, but she ignores them.

She needs to get this filed and sorted, and she does want to go home.

To Tim.

“Hey Chen,” Smitty says. “You still here?”

“No. Sergeant Bradford won’t approve anymore overtime for me.” She says. “I need a favor.” Smitty raises his eyebrows.

This was a bad idea.

A very bad idea.

And yet—

“What’s that?” Smitty asks. Lucy quickly explains and Smitty nods along like he’s listening. There’s a fat chance he’s not but it doesn’t register in her mind at the moment.

“You owe me.” Smitty says. Lucy groans because nothing good comes from owing Smitty a favor but this was worth it because she was going home to Tim.

“Fine.” She says. At this point she just wants to get home. “I owe you. You can do this right Smitty?”

“Absolutely Chen.” Smitty says with a grin. “Say hi to Sergeant Bradford.” Lucy rolls her eyes and walks off and now she can go home.

***

“So what was the real reason you wouldn’t approve my overtime?” Lucy asks later when they are curled up on the couch together.

“You have worked way too much lately. The president’s visit you worked all night.” Tim says. “I just didn’t have the hours for you.”

“Right.” Lucy says. “And it has nothing to do with the fact that you wanted me home.”

“Nope.”

“Sure.” Lucy says grinning at him. She doesn’t believe him at all.

“Okay maybe I was a little selfish.” He admits. “You just moved in Luce. We just got everything unpacked and I want you home. With me. I mean—” Lucy laughs and leans over to press a kiss to his cheek.

“You are really sweet and I love you.” She says. “I want to be home with you too.”

“Good.” Tim says. “I’m sorry I had to be so tough with you.” Lucy rolls her eyes and pushes at his shoulders.

“Shut up.”

“You love me.” Tim says a teasing lilt to his voice. “Right?”

“Absolutely.” Lucy says and she bites her tongue from telling Tim that she handed it off to Smitty.

(He would be fine. He knew what he was doing, oh god she just realized it was Smitty.)

“You looked like you just saw a ghost.” Tim comments. “Are you okay?” Lucy nods and gives him a kiss.

“I’m good. I’ll be right back.” She says. She gives him a smile before she’s hurrying off to the bedroom.

She pulls her phone out and dials Smitty’s number. She has a really bad feeling Smitty is being Smitty.

“Hey Chen.”

“Did you get the thing done?” Lucy asks keeping her voice low. “Please tell me—”

“It’s all taken care of Chen. Do you not trust me?” He asks. Lucy rolls her eyes a little, of course she doesn’t trust him. But that was another story for another time.

“Good.”

“You still owe me.” Smitty says. “I haven’t thought of it yet. But I will get back to you.” Lucy groans a little but she did agree to it. This was her choice  and she had to live with the consequences of whatever was to come.

“I’m aware.” Lucy says. “Thanks again Smitty.” She hangs up and then hurries back out to Tim who is still stretched out on the sofa.

“Everything okay?” He asks as she settles back down. He wraps an arm around her and gives her a squeeze.

“I’m glad you are here.” He says. “Other than the fact that I like you. I really can’t sleep without you.”

“Not that you are getting much sleep anyway.” Lucy says. Tim blows out a sigh, and she’s surprised his phone hasn’t rung since she got home.

“I know.” He says. “It’s part of the job.”

“It shouldn’t be the whole job.” She points out. Tim just studies her for a few seconds. “What?”

“I don’t know what I  would do without you.”

“You would be a disaster at home.” She says. “But you got it handled at work.”

“Funny.” He says rolling his eyes. “I’m serious Luce. You are one of the only things that keeps me steady.”

“You are one of the only ones who keeps me calm in the eye of the storm.” Lucy says. “So I guess we are even.”

“I guess we are.” He says. “I really am glad you are home. With me.” Lucy hums softly and as annoyed as she was at first. She is glad she is at home too, there’s no place she would rather be than right here next to Tim.

In their house that they were building together.

Their life that they were intertwining little by little and more so everyday.

She loves this man so much.

She doesn’t know what she would do without him. She doesn’t want to go without him again. She hopes she doesn’t and she has a feeling Tim won’t let her go again.

She curls up to him, and he presses a kiss to her head.

It might not be perfect but this is pretty much all she needs.
