They’ll never have a Clue how much I adore you

Summary:

“Believe what you want to, my dear,” Wadsworth purred, “But I know you’re helpless to my charm.”

“Yes..” Green admitted, “Goddammit, yes I do! I love how you say the wittiest things that make my heart flutter! I love your stupid, irritating smirk that somehow makes you look more enticing.” He softly chuckled to himself for a few moments until his smile faltered. “And yet, I hate that I cannot express my love beyond these walls.”

Work Text:

“Okay chief, take them away. I’m going to go home and sleep with my wife.”

Upon hearing Green’s words, Wadsworth couldn’t help but smirk.

“I’m sure your ‘wife’ will be very delighted to see you come home again,” Wadsworth added with a sly chuckle. For a moment, Green saw Wadsworth’s eyes flash with unexplained emotion, but it was quickly replaced by his usual gleam.

Green gave Wadsworth a quick, warning glare that fortunately went unnoticed by the chief. Wadsworth only responded with a toothy grin, as his sparkling eyes of amusement taunted Green–daring him to respond.

Meanwhile, the other guests were being led out of the mansion one by one in handcuffs. As the last of them was being escorted out the front door, the chief turned toward the silently bickering pair.

“Very splendid job, you two. We’ll hold them all in custody and interrogate them first thing in the morning. Go get some rest.”

After they both arrived home and hung their coats on the rack, Green flopped onto the couch in exhaustion while Wadsworth prepared some tea.

There was a period of comfortable silence as they both ruminated on the events that occurred in the mansion. The only sound in the room was Wadsworth pouring water into the kettle and setting it on to boil.

Wadsworth joined Green on the couch, then wrapped his arms around his waist and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek. He nestled his face into the crook of Green’s neck and released a sigh of contentment, feeling the warmth of his lover in his arms.

“Well, ‘Mr. Green,’ I say we make an effective undercover pair, as per usual. I confess I have grown quite accustomed to working alongside you.”

“Wadsworth, you do realize that we don’t need to use those pseudonyms anymore, right?” Green questioned.

Wadsworth gazed up at Green with an affectionate look. “But darling, I find that you look very ravishing in green.”

Mr. Green blushed and looked away in embarrassment.

“It is a shame that you had to spill coffee on the green suit I purchased just for the occasion,” Wadsworth sighed dramatically, his expression showing a look of feigned hurt.

“I’m sorry that I’m a little accident-prone!” Green protested, “The blue suit I ended up wearing didn’t look terrible, right?”

Wadsworth pretended to be in thought for a few seconds, then traced his hands across Green’s jaw as he spoke.

“My dear, you make every suit color in the world look handsome when you wear them. Even the colorblind would agree. Alas, it is a shame that you missed the opportunity to properly represent your alias, since none of the other guests’ attires matched theirs at all.”

“Speaking of aliases, I don’t think you were doing a very good job at butling,” Green folded his arms, attempting to look annoyed. “What kind of butler throws around his guests like a doll as he recites the events of a crime?”

“A dedicated one,” Wadsworth responded with a self-satisfied grin, “I’ll have you know, I take undercover missions very seriously.”

“Too seriously!” Green retorted, “I nearly fractured my kneecaps with the number of times you tossed me to the floor!”

Wadsworth laughed heartily. “And despite all of that, you’re still alive and standing! Besides, a little rough treatment is nothing you can’t handle..”

Green turned his head towards Wadsworth, whose head was resting on his shoulder, and gave him a mock-disapproving look. “Still, that is no reason to treat me like a sack of potatoes!”

“No, perhaps it is not,” Wadsworth replied, “But I found it entertaining.”

Green made a small grumbling noise as he muttered, “You and your antics keep–”

He was interrupted by a warm hand tilting his jaw towards Wadsworth, followed by soft lips meeting his own.

Green’s heart rate spiked upon the unexpected contact, but he slowly melted into his partner’s touch as Wadsworth slipped his arm around Green’s shoulder while the other hand remained on his jaw.

It started off gentle, like a tender moment they wanted to preserve. With how busy their lives were as agents, it had been a while since they were able to share any intimate time together.

Green found himself deepening the kiss, letting out a deep, guttural sound against Wadsworth’s lips as his arms wrapped around his waist. Wadsworth responded immediately, pressing his body further against Green’s until they could feel each other’s rapid heartbeats.

Time seemed to slow. They got lost in each other’s lips, holding onto each other as if nothing else in the world mattered to them. Green unwrapped one of his arms that laid around Wadsworth’s waist and reached towards the front of Wadsworth’s trousers until-

WHIIEEEEE

The kettle’s shrill scream rudely interrupted the moment. Wadsworth broke away at first, gently guiding Green’s wandering hand towards the couch. Green whimpered in response and looked at him with pleading eyes.

Wadsworth gave Green a fond smile. He ran a hand over the top of Green’s head, lightly brushing his hair.

“Patience, dear,” he said softly, “I suspect there will be more time for this later, after we’ve had our tea.”

Wadsworth then sauntered over to the stovetop, and poured the hot water into their matching teacups. He arranged them both on a silver tray and placed it on the coffee table in front of Green.

Green gave a hum of appreciation for his lover as he picked up his teacup and took a sip. He quickly recoiled from the teacup and quickly placed it on the tray when he felt the boiling water burn his tongue.

Wadsworth chuckled affectionately upon seeing Green’s display of impatience.

“Always so quick to jump into things,” he teased, “It’s one of the things I find very endearing about you.”

“Why do I feel like you’re secretly making fun of me?”

When he heard his lover’s words, Wadsworth’s expression softened from that stupid, irritating smirk to a quiet, mournful smile.

“I wish we both didn’t have to make up wives,” Green continued, eyes looking down at the floor. He recalled the ache he felt in his heart as Wadsworth told the others about his nonexistent wife’s tragic death. At that time, he wondered if Wadsworth’s tears were only meant to create a convincing performance or to express grief about something else. A fleeting thought crossed his mind: did Wadsworth feel the same ache when Green mentioned his nonexistent wife to the chief?

As if he was reading his lover’s mind, Wadsworth answered before the question could leave Green’s lips.

“Neither do I. It took a lot of restraint to not proclaim myself as the one you truly love in front of the chief.”

He let out an amused hum.

“But I’m sure there’s a lot more on your mind, isn’t there?”

Green sighed. If he had to choose one thing he appreciated the most about Wadsworth, it was how perceptive he was. He could read Green like an open book, and Green didn’t know whether it was a blessing or a curse.

“I should be relieved. Ecstatic, in fact, that Boddy is dead. I could finally breathe without being constantly blackmailed or worried about being outed…and yet…I don’t feel free at all.”

Wadsworth grimaced upon witnessing Green’s sadness. He sat beside him on the couch and gently ran his hand along Green’s hair. Wadsworth stared into his lover’s deep blue eyes before placing a delicate kiss on his lips, making Green’s heart skip a beat.

“There is no denying that the world is cruel. But as long as we’re together, I can assure you’re safe and free because I will always love you as you are,” he murmured softly.

He wraps an arm around Green’s shoulder and pulls the other man closer until their sides were pressed against each other.

“Even if no one else will know about us, that doesn’t make the connection between us any less real. Because both of us are here to witness it.”

Green smiled, the words warming his heart.

“Besides, I personally believe our relationship is more stable than both of Mrs. White’s marriages.”

Green slipped out a laugh, completely caught off guard.

“Give the poor woman a break, she’s probably sitting in jail right now.”

After the lighthearted exchange, they sat tangled in each other’s arms for a while until Green broke the silence.

“I don’t say this enough, but thank you for everything…sweetheart.”

“Of course. If you ever need any affirmation, I will do anything to remind you how much our love matters, despite what the world thinks.”

Green perked up with an obvious glint in his eye, “Anything?“

Wadsworth gave his usual knowing smirk, already getting an idea of what Green was going to suggest. If Green was a puppy, his tail would’ve been wagging at the speed of light.

He leaned in, “Anything. But you have to use your words, my dear.”

Green responded quickly, “Why don’t we finish what we started earlier? Before the kettle, you know…”

“As you wish, Mr. Green.”
