Work Text:
I have exactly two minutes to push the unstable transmission we’ve managed to get.
Two minutes. After all the math, careful calibration, and desperation for me to send something to Earth.
“Okay,” I mutter, leaning toward the console. “Nobody distract me.”
Rocky’s hand settles on my leg.
I close my eyes.
“Rocky.”
He makes an innocent, inquisitive sound.
“Don’t.”
Adrian laughs from behind me. “He's not doing anything.”
“He's touching me.”
“He likes touching you.”
“I’ve noticed.”
Rocky’s claws trail up my side, warm and gentle, mindful. I fight to keep my concentration.
“Message to Earth, start.”
I am alive.
Three words. Simple. My throat tightens with the memory of all that led to them.
Rocky’s managed to climb up into my lap now, leaning up to rest against my shoulder, while Adrian coos and plays with my hair.
“Guys.”
“Hmm?”
“I'm trying to tell humanity I’m alive.”
“And we’re trying to make sure you remember that you’re loved.”
That’s worse.
I laugh despite myself, wiping my teary eyes. “You two are impossible.”
Rocky makes a pleased trill.
I add four more words.
I am alive. I am not alone.
My finger hovers over the transmit key.
I press send.
