Work Text:
It’s quiet, too quiet for a house with a two year old and a seven year old. It’s been quiet like this before but it’s usually at night or when the girls are having quiet time.
They aren’t having quiet time right now, Emma was a little too hyper and Sophie had just woken up from her nap.
Lucy sighs as she makes her way upstairs, the girls weren’t troublemakers per say but they were kids. They did like to have fun and sometimes that meant getting into something that they weren’t suppose to get into.
Lucy peeks into Emma’s room and then Sophie’s but they aren’t in either room. She eyes her bedroom door and peeks inside. She can hear them giggling in the bathroom.
“Hold still sissy.” Emma says. Lucy doesn’t really like the sound of that. “Hold still.” She makes her way into the bathroom and sees Sophie perched on a chair and Emma putting makeup on her face.
Lucy’s makeup.
The stuff she replaces once a year because it was a little more expensive than any of her other stuff.
“Emma Lucille! Sophie Lorelai! What are you doing?” Lucy says. Emma drops the powder she is holding and it breaks open and falls all over the floor.
“I’m sorry mommy!” Emma squeals and she steps away from the chair and into the powder on the floor. “Sophie wanted to look pretty.”
“I’m pretty mama.” Sophie says. She kicks her legs in excitement. Lucy just stares at them, feeling a little sick. Sophie’s face is full of makeup. Her eyeshadow, blush, eyeliner are spread across the counter and her oldest daughter is tracking the powder everywhere.
“Oh my goodness.” Lucy says. She takes a couple deep breaths before she is walking over. She lifts Emma onto the counter and starts brushing off her feet. “Bug, you know you shouldn’t get into mommy’s things without permission.” Emma does look a little guilty as she hangs her head.
“Sorry mommy.” She says softly. Lucy looks over at her toddler who seems to have noticed the mood shift in the room. She stands up on the chair and almost loses her balance.
“Careful Sophie!” Lucy says and she walks over to pick the toddler up. “Girls, you should not be in here without me or daddy.”
Emma hangs her head and so does Sophie. Lucy’s not even sure the two year old knows what’s going on but she loves to copy her sister.
Lucy goes back over to Emma and dusts off her feet some more. “Go to your room Emma and take Sophie with you.”
“I’m sorry mommy.” Emma says. She slides off the counter and hugs Lucy. Lucy bends down to her level.
“It’s okay Bug.” Lucy says. “We will talk about this later. “I need to clean up.” Emma nods and takes Sophie’s hand before she’s pulling her out of the bathroom.
Lucy starts to clean up’s feeling a little heartbroken about the makeup. She knows it’s just stuff. She knows it’s not a big deal in the long run but still.
“Hey,” a voice says from the doorways Lucy looks up and sees Tim standing there. “Emma is upset.” He looks at the mess around her.
Lucy’s heart drops a little at the thought of Emma being upset. She obviously didn’t mean to ruin Lucy’s makeup. “She is?” Lucy asks. “I didn’t—”
“I’m guessing this wasn’t your doing.” Tim says and he steps inside to help her clean everything up.
“No.” Lucy says. “Just a piece of advice but when it’s too quiet in the house something is going on.”
“Got it.” Tim says chuckling a little. Lucy sighs a little.
“I didn’t mean to make Emma upset.” Lucy says. “I just reacted. It’s not—”
“I think she’s more upset with herself babe.” Tim says. “She knows what she did was wrong.”
“I guess.” Lucy says and Emma is only 7, she just turned 7.
“She knows babe.” Tim says. Lucy sighs as she continues to clean up. She loves her daughters so much, they were both so different but she loves that they are.
Emma is more shy, sensitive and sweet. She really doesn’t get into trouble, she observes rather than just going for it.
Sophie was independent, sweet and wild. At only 2, she knew what she wanted and she would tell you. Lucy wasn’t worried about her starting pre school next year because she would thrive at it.
Lucy is worried about Emma, and thinking Lucy was made at her. She might be a little frustrated but it was just makeup. She could buy more.
They finish cleaning up, and then Tim is helping her put all the still good makeup away.
“I’m going to talk to Emma,” She says. “I don’t—”
“Wait,” Tim says. “Let me try something first okay?” Lucy gives him a weird look but he walks off without another word.
She guesses she would talk to Emma later.

“We are going to pick out mama some new makeup.” Tim tells Emma who is skipping next to the cart. “And you aren’t not going to get into it right?”
Emma nods looking a little guilty. Tim knows she didn’t mean any harm by it, but it happened and she needed to know there were consequences.
“Yes daddy.” Emma says. Tim looks at Sophie who is sitting in the cart. His plan was to only bring Emma but then Sophie found out and attached herself to Tim. He told Lucy they had a surprise for her and that was that.
“And you Sophie,” he says bopping her nose and making her giggle. “You need to learn from your sister’s mistakes.”
“Sissy!” Sophie squeals pointing at Emma.
“Daddy, I don’t think she knows what that means.” Emma says.
“Probably not.” Tim agrees. “All right what are we looking for—” He had taken pictures of the makeup that was ruined.
He puts each one in the basket and adds a few extra. Lucy only spoils herself once year because everything else she buys goes to the girls (not that she minds). But she deserves this especially after he knows she just bought it.
(She wouldn’t admit that to him in the moment but he knows).
He grabs all the items and then moves onto the snack aisle and throws in Lucy’s favorite snacks. “Is it mommy’s birthday?” Emma asks curiously.
“No Bug. But sometimes we just need to surprise mommy.” Tim explains. “And get her favorite things.”
“We are her favorite girls.” Emma says proudly gesturing between her and Sophie.
“You definitely are.” Tim agrees. “Okay I think this is good. Let’s go give this to mommy.” Emma claps her hands and then Sophie does the same thing.
Tim smiles to himself, this was going to be a really good surprise.
A really good one.

Lucy’s not sure where Tim went with the girls but it’s two hours later when they finally walk through the door again. Tim is carrying a handful of bags and Emma is jumping up and down.
“Mommy we have a surprise for you!” She squeals. Tim gives her a look but puts Sophie down. The toddler immediately runs to Lucy and she picks her up. She gives her kisses, and then turns back to her husband and daughter.
“A surprise?” She asks.
“Emma, do you have something to say to your mama?” Tim says. Emma dips her head before she looks at Lucy.
“I’m sorry mama for using your makeup without asking.” Emma says. “And ruining it.”
“It’s okay Emma.” She says. She had calmed down quite a bit. She knows Emma didn’t mean to do it, and she was just having some fun. Emma smiles big at her, and Lucy loves to see the smile on her face.
“We—as in the girls and I—” Tim says stepping forward. “Bought you some makeup to replace all the makeup you lost.” He hands the bags to Lucy and she looks in them. He had indeed gotten all her makeup and more. Plus some of her favorite snacks and candy. She looks up at him, and he gives her a soft smile.
“Thank you.” She whispers and puts Sophie on the ground before she’s making her way to Tim. She gives him a hug, and he hugs her back.
She is so lucky to have Tim in her life. So, so lucky and she is so proud of her girls.
“Thank you Emma.” She says and her oldest daughter comes over to hug her. Sophie toddles over and joins the group hug as well.
It’s perfect.
“You deserve to have all your makeup.” Tim says. “Plus a little more. Right Emma?” Emma nods her head.
“I love you mommy.” She says.
“I love you too Bug.” She says and she presses a kiss to Emma’s forehead and then turns to Sophie who is smiling big at her. “And you Sissy.” Sophie hugs Lucy again, and she really does have the sweetest daughters.
And husband.
“I love you too.” Tim says sounding indignant. Lucy grins up at him and stands up before moving back into his arms. She couldn’t do this life without this man right here. He was the reason her world kept spinning most days. They all were really, and somethings might go askew. Her makeup might get ruined but she wouldn’t have it any other way.
She has such a wonderful life.
