Work Text:

Max and Lucas had been dating for around three months now, which Lucas could only explain as the best three months of his life. The young couple never really hung out alone, but today was a little different. After a lot of begging, convincing, and extra chores for the young fella, Lucas’s parents finally agreed to allow Lucas and Max to watch a movie in his house while they went to dinner with their friends, as long as they stayed in the living room. Of course, Lucas didn’t understand why, but didn’t really question it. After all, what would they even do? He just hoped Erica stayed in her room and didn’t bother them.

The early afternoon of their planned movie date Saturday, Lucas hopped on his bike and pedaled towards the Video Store in the small town of Hawkins. As he pedaled, the chilly March wind hitting his face relaxed him slightly, still quite a bit nervous about having Max over all to himself. Most of the time, they always hung out as a group, and it made both of them a bit less nervous. They had kissed at the Snow Ball in December, but the young couple still felt the tingles after every single slight touch with each other. Hand holding, brushed shoulders, and touched knees. They hadn’t kissed since the Snow Ball, having not had enough privacy to do it. But that would change tonight.

As Lucas arrived at the Video Store, his brown, big eyes scanned the VHS tapes, hoping he’ll find something that won’t make both of them throw up. His eyes catched the sight of the now-old VHS tape of ‘Halloween’ He excitedly picked up the rectangle-shaped box, and walked over to the counter to check it out.

“This is perfect,” he murmured under his breath as he read the back of the box. Max loves Michael Myers, and even though he’s a little scared, usually preferring Sci-fi, he knows Max will love it.

As he walked out of the rental store, he stashed the tape into his backpack, then hopped on his kind-of cold bicycle seat. The cold–unfortunaly–still winter air chilled down the mysterious material of his seat.

Later that night, he put on a nice but comfy outfit, hoping Max won’t notice the loads of cologne he applied. He fixed his hair as much as his inexperienced hands could do, and started making the snacks. He went out to buy them yesterday after school with Mike. Obviously–Mike just as inexperienced on dates–wasn’t much help. In the kitchen, his mom and dad said goodbye, repeated their rules, and hugged him. Erica stands behind Lucas, watching him with a cocky smirk.

“You stink like dads' cologne!” The 10-year-old exclaimed, amusement spread on her face as she chuckled at her brothers’ exaggerated scent.

“Shut up, Erica,” The boy replied back at his little sister, annoyed with her presence. “Go away.”

“Don’t want me to interrupt your date, Lukey?” She says the nickname with a mocking tone in her voice.

“Go to your room, Erica!” He exclaimed, extending his hand with a pack of skittles in them.

“Okay, okay. But I’ll be watching you two.” Erica said, making an over emphasized gesture with her hands.

Suddenly, the sound of the doorbell ringing made Lucas jump. Erica chuckled, then ran to her room, leaving them alone…for now. Lucas walked over to the front door, taking a deep breath. He opened the wooden door, seeing Max standing there. God, she looked so beautiful.

“Hi, Max,” He said, his voice carrying a hint of nervousness.

“Hey, stalker,” She said, peeking in at his house. “Can I come in or…?” She said, noticing him staring at her, still standing in a way that blocks her way inside.

“Oh, yeah. S-sorry…” He stuttered, mentally scolding himself for being so obvious as he moved out of the way to let Max in.

Max stepped in, taking in the sight of his well-decorated home. “It’s nice. Your house, I mean,”

“Thanks. My mom did all of it,” He told her, closing the door behind them.

Max chuckled quietly. “I figured,”

“I, um, rented a movie. I mean, yeah we’re having a movie date and all- that was stupid to say, wasn’t it?” The dark-skinned boy commented, embarrassed by his own words.

“Very. Anyways, what movie did you rent?” Max said, settling on his couch, a bit nervous, but definitely hiding it better than Lucas.

“Halloween. The first one,” He said, sitting down closely beside Max.

“Remembered my costume, I’m guessing,”

“Yup. Could never forget when you scared the shit out of me jumping out of those bushes.”

Max laughed, the sound music to Lucas’s ears. He laughed with her, the sounds of their happiness at the memory jolting back.

“I should prepare the stuff,” Lucas said, then got up to grab the snacks. He set the trays of candy and chips on the coffee table, along with two cans of coke. He opened the cans for both of them, smiling at Max.

“Quite the gentlemen you are, stalker,” Max commented on the caring gesture, amusement and excitement filling her tone of voice.
“Just for you,” he replied.

“You’re disgustingly cute,” she stated, chuckling as she met his big, brown eyes.

Lucas took the VHS tape out of his backpack, and walked over to the VCR, carefully putting the tape in, praying to any god there that the last customer rewinded the movie, so he wouldn’t have to endure 2 minutes of complete silence. As he inserted the tape, he watched the screen of the TV, muttering something under his breath. As the screen lit up from its fog to the end credits of the movie, the main theme of the movie playing, both of them grunted, annoyed.

“It clearly says ‘Be kind, Rewind!’ Why can’t people just rewind?” She stated angrily, annoyed at people’s lack of empathy.

Lucas pressed the rewind button, the loud click the only sound in the quiet, dark room. Lucas walked back to the couch, sitting back down next to his girlfriend.

“This is so irritating,” Max exclaimed, grabbing a handful of popcorn at the same time as Lucas, their hands touching. A visible blush crept up Max’s face, while Lucas’s dark skin thankfully didn’t allow for visibility.

“I know,” He said, then looked deep into her blue, ocean-looking eyes. Her eyes locked into his, a darker blush crept upon her freckled face. They both suddenly became aware of the close distance of their faces, their breath mingling with one another’s. Max let out a soft gasp, and Lucas’s hand moved up to her face to tuck a strand of her fierce, red hair behind her ear. He leaned in slowly, their eyes closing. Their top lips touched, then the loud, sudden ‘CLUNK’ sound of the VCR completing the rewinding forced both of them to sit back up. Lucas scrambled to get up messily, while Max awkwardly sat on the couch, taking a small sip of her opened coke can. Lucas muttered something incoherent under his breath as he walked over to the VCR to press play. The very long intro started playing as Lucas sat back down, clearing his throat. Another moment interrupted.

They both sat awkwardly while they waited for the intro to end, and the movie to start. As the young teens watched the movie, Lucas wrapped his arm around Max’s shoulders, her head resting on his shoulder. His thumb drew circles on her skin, sending waves of shock and goosebumps that had absolutely nothing to do with the scene of Michael murdering his older sister on the screen of the TV.

Around half way through the movie, Lucas turned to face her. “Do you want more coke?” He asked, their close proximity sending more goosebumps through both the young teens.

“I-I’m okay…” Max said quietly, not wanting him to look away from her eyes. Lucas leaned in again, and this time, they kissed. His warm lips sent waves of warmth and pleasure through her, and so did hers. As his mouth sucked on Max’s top lip, Max did the same, placing her hand on his shoulder, sitting up. Lucas cupped her cheek with one hand, and held her waist with the other. ‘God, she tastes so good…’ Lucas thought to himself. Max’s tongue slid into his mouth, confidence returning. Lucas swirled his tongue around hers, both of them fighting for dominance. The two teens were now making out, the movie completely forgotten now. As they made out, their confidence and comfort with each other grew, and so did the passion of the kiss. This was the first time they made out, and god, was it amazing. Lucas’s hand tangled in her smooth, red waves of hair, still kissing her.

“I…I love you, Max,” Lucas stated confidently against her lips, the words feeling like a relief to say out loud.

“I love you too, Lucas,” She replied, her chest warm at feeling the truth in his words. Their lips met again, and they continued their little make out session on the Sinclair couch, until they heard a gag coming from the stairs.

“Ew! I’m telling mom!” Erica ran towards the phone and tried to dial the Smith’s, where their parents were having dinner. Lucas stood up and ran towards her, but her mom had already picked up.

“Hello?” Mrs.Sinclair’s voice came through the speaker, thinking something bad happened.

“Mom! Lucas and Max were being gross!” Erica exclaimed, and Lucas grabbed the phone.

“Mom, she’s lying. Goodbye!” He hung up, and scolded Erica. “You can’t snitch on us like that, Erica!

“Watch me!”

“What do you want?” Lucas asked in a worried tone of voice.

“Five bucks. And I’ll ask for five bucks every time this happens!”

“Ugh, fine” Lucas replied to his bratty little sister, pulling a $5 bill out of his pocket, handing it to her. “You’re such a brat.”
