Life Math by Dummies

Summary:

It is scientifically proven that when you are comfortable with the people around you, you tend to use less of your intelligence in problem solving.

Hyunjin, Minho and Jisung are totally comfortable with each other.

Notes:

Hi, I'm Always.
I almost lose my mind writing this btw🤣
Don't get them wrong, they are not stupid at all, they are just too comfortable with each other to use their brains skskskks
And I adore paboracha so much, I had so much fun watching them together in a show. I think that's probably how I came up with this chapter <3
Anyway thank you for reading and i hope you enjoy!

Work Text:

When the kids help their grandparents with game preparation at home that weekend, the two parent pairs go out for some grocery shopping. Lucky for them, there is a sale going on in the middle of the ground floor, so they decide to take a look. Out of all things in there, Minho is attracted to the toasters. She picks up one and steals a glance at the promotion tag.

"Holy- Hyunjin-ah, look at this. The second item is 50% off" she gets excited right away, and Hyunjin approaches her at instance while holding hands with her husband. The three of them are eyeing the appliance together before Minho looks at Hyunjin again. "But I only need one. Do you want one?"

"Hmm...I just bought a new one, though. But it feels such a waste to not buy another one. Unnie just get two for yourself then" Hyunjin suggests encouragingly. Minho looks at the box of toaster in her hand again, contemplating.

"Should I?" She mumbles. In the meantime, Jisung stares at the promotion tag again, his face showing how he is having a mental calculation at the moment.

"The second item is 50%..." He mumbles to himself, then he looks at the two ladies as he continues "Does that mean if we buy four of them, the fourth item is totally free?"

Both Hyunjin and Minho stay quiet for about a minute, staring at Jisung before staring at the price board. They expressions make it obvious how they are trying to calculate it in their head. While Hyunjin is still trying to make it make sense, Minho gasps.

"That's right! So, we get four of these but we only pay three of them, right?" Minho gets excited, staring at the toaster in her hand again. Only by then, Hyunjin understands the whole thing, and she gets even more excited than Minho when she hits her sister-in-law's shoulder.

"That's not true, unnie. The second item is 50%. So if you buy four, you only need to pay 2.5 of them" she explains lightly, but causing the two best friends next to her to react with a confused 'eh?'. Minho and Jisung look at Hyunjin with their brows furrow in confusion.

"What does that mean, my love?" The husband asks softy, chuckling to himself because he doesn't understand where the '2.5' comes from. Hyunjin is more than delighted to explain.

"Listen carefully, my love. So, one item is normal price. The second item is half price. Now you double the discount because you buy another two, so the fourth is considered completely free. But the second item is still half price. So, that means you only need to pay item one and item three in full price, then you pay half for item two" Hyunjin teaches them both, she even points out at the promotion tag and the toaster in Minho's hands.

"Eh???" Jisung makes a longer confused sound while Minho looks like she is totally lost. But in a split second, Jisung chuckles again.

"Wait, why does that make sense to me now?" He changes his mind. Hearing the question, Minho believes the math in no time without trying to understand it by herself.

"So, if we buy 6, the sixth item is 150% off, does that mean the mall owes us money?" Minho shamelessly connects the dots together, causing Jisung to laugh out loud. Hyunjin chuckles and hits Minho's shoulder again.

"No, you fool. If the sixth item is 150%, the mall won't pay us" Hyunjin argues softly, before adding a further explanation as she crosses her arms. "They will just be the extra 50% to the seventh item"

The two best friends gasp dramatically, totally buying the nonsense explanation.

"Woah... That means the more we buy it, the more it's worth our money" Minho concludes.

"Then, how much should we buy? Six thousand?" Jisung starts a silly joke, looking at his best friend because he knows she will add a remark to his question. As expected, Minho nods and looks at him.

"Good idea, then we triple the price and resell it" she says it shamelessly again, causing the married couple next to her laugh. Only then, the three of them gets excited to choose which colour for the toaster's model they want to purchase.

They are truly unaware that at the side, Seungmin has been listening the whole discussion. The guy stands there, staring at them, his expression is unreadable, and he almost breaks the mug on sale in his hand.

And when he sees them about to put six toasters in the cart, he snaps.

"What the actual f-"

Bonus :

Seungmin is sitting across the trio at the grandparents' dining table. He looks at Jisung first.

"Okay, listen carefully. Spell 'shop'" he requests. Jisung, although he is totally confused, just decides to obey without further question.

"S-H-O-P" he spells. Seungmin nods but his face shows that it's not over yet, and as expected, after that, he asks a follow up question.

"What do you do when the traffic light turns green?"

"Stop" Jisung answers instantly. Minho and Hyunjin changes their gazes to Seungmin, checking his reaction. Seungmin closes his eyes, calming himself down and without reacting to the answer, he moves his body slightly so he can face Hyunjin.

"You. What's the similarity between a chalk, paper towel, flour and cloud?" Seungmin asks the next question right away. The question alone is enough to make Hyunjin absolutely lost. She takes a longer time to think, she looks up, and her mouth mumbles all the things Seungmin said again while she imagines the visual of them.

"They are all white?" She answers, half-confident. And right when she looks back at him to see his reaction, he asks the follow up question.

"Yeah, and cow drinks?"

"Milk" she answers without a second thought. Just like before, Minho and Jisung looks at Seungmin's reaction again. Seungmin wants to punch the table. He closes his eyes again, takes a deep breath and sighs. He has no idea why is he doing this to himself. At last, he turns his body again to face his wife.

"Okay, baby, follow my words, okay? Don't let me down" he says. Minho nods with confidence as she says.

"Alright, Kim Seungmin. Hit me"

Seungmin slams the table with his fist, startling all three of them. The trio is totally confused about what is going on, while Seungmin is cupping his face. He is two seconds away to lose his mind, but lucky for him, Yongbok comes at the right time to show him the human-cucumber she made with her grandmother's cucumber and several toothpicks. Seungmin puts down his hands and reacts to the 'masterpiece' first, then suddenly he has the urge to ask.

"Princess, how many dwarfs does Cinderella have?"

"Ahh, I know that one!" Hyunjin whines, wondering why she didn't get that easy question.

"Was it six?" Jisung dumbfoundedly looks at the two ladies. Minho looks at him with a judgy expression.

"Seven, you dummy" she responds.

"Cinderella doesn't have a dwarf, though?" Yongbok looks at her father in confusion, wondering if he asks the wrong question. The trio looks at the little girl simultaneously, and they freeze in their spots. Seungmin nods, sending them an unamused gaze before he gets up and lifts the little girl in his arms.

"That's right, princess. I'm so glad you get the intelligence from my genes" he responds and walks away, leaving the trio feel extremely dumb. The married couple look at each other, then Minho quickly tries to chase after her husband.

"H-Honey, you told me to repeat after you. ...What was the question?"
