Summary
***
The chair Grace was standing on suddenly jerked under his feet and he stumbled off of it, crashing to his knees and then all fours with a bruising force that drove the breath out of him.
What—?
It wasn’t just the chair that had moved. The ground was shaking. The whole classroom was moving. Frightened squeaks and whistles erupted from the pebbles.
Earthquake.

“Can we—can we add one more Earth tradition? To mark our courting?”“Oh, yes, words of great encouragement, Grace!” Rocky said eagerly. “Which one? Rocky rescue Grace from tower by climbing hair? Grace run from ball and Rocky bring shoe that fit only Grace?”
“No, Rock, I had something simpler in mind,” Grace said fondly, stroking his good hand down Rocky’s carapace, his bracelet chiming harmoniously. “True love’s kiss.”
Grace leaned forward, closing his eyes, and pressed his lips against the xenosuit covering Rocky’s carapace. Grace lingered--Rocky was warm, so warm against his lips. The tether between Grace’s heart and Rocky’s hearts snapped into place once again, alive, awake, singing with joy, and the wounded ache that had plagued Grace's soul for so long ebbed gently away.
Grace drew back and then leaned his temple into Rocky's carapace with a sigh, a peace he’d never known settling over him as Rocky hummed contentedly.
“Thank, Grace,” Rocky said. “Will ask for many more kisses as courtship commences.”
“Sounds good, Rock,” Grace said, a fond smile tilting his lips. “We got our happy ending, didn’t we?”
“No, Grace,” Rocky said, drawing Adrian in to complete their circle. “We got our happy beginning.”

“All right, I think that’s enough on groundshake mechanics for now, we can come back to this tomorrow,” Grace said briskly. “Now, Reggie, do you remember the question you asked me the day of the groundshake? I said I would research it and get back to you.”“Yes, Teacher Grace!” Reggie piped up from the front row. “Wanted to know why word for bottom-dwelling fish with migrating eyes is also used for human balance instability!”
“That’s right, Reggie, we were talking about the word ‘flounder.’ Well, on Earth, there are many, many languages and they influence each other over time,” Grace explained. “‘Flounder’ meaning ‘fish’ comes from an Old Norse word meaning ‘flatfish.’ ‘Flounder’ meaning ‘struggle clumsily’ comes from a older English word ‘founder’ which means ‘to fall.’”
