The day of the rally had arrived for the Newsies.
The highly spoken of Brooklyn had arrived in lower Manhattan along with other cities such as Richmond and Flushing Newsies.
The one most anticipated however? Spot Conlon, the leader of the Brooklyn Newsies. Aka “The toughest newsies in town”
Racetrack, yes, while he was scared of this Spot Conlon. He of course could not act scared. Or too mesmerised on that matter.
Race, being the loud boy he was ofcourse cheered over practically everyone. Spot, who was being crowded by Newsies asking questions. Caught himself by surprise when he only was able to hear a certain boy’s laugh.
He turned his head and saw none other than Racetrack Higgins on another newsies’s shoulders, cheering and laughing so loudly that the birds in the sky were so curious about the commotion they began to flock in the air above Race.
Spot’s breath hitched for a second before he turned about half of his attention back to the storm of Newsies around.
…
The famous Jack Kelly had arrived, contradicting to how the Newsies thought he’d be. He had spoken against the rally. Unlike the rest of the flock that immediately left yelling insults, Spot stood dumbfounded. How could Jack Kelly do something like speaking out against the rally they worked so hard to achieve.
Snapping out of his daze he took a look at Race who was slowly approaching Jack with his fists clenched. Almost by reflex he ran towards Race, grabbed his hands and brought him and Radetrack into the nearby alleyway.
“You think punchin’ that coward’s gonna make things better?” Spot spoke roughly yet at a whisper.
Now Race was the one that was dumbfounded. “S-Spot Conlon!?” He managed to get out.
Spot let go of Race’s hands and took off his own hat. “Don’t be pickin’ fights with your leader. Probably somethin’ happened. Jack wouldn’t do somethin’ like that! We both know it!”
Race nodded slowly. A tad intimidated but also, against his own goals, mesmerised. He stared for a moment into Spot’s eyes without a word.
Spot caught the gaze, his chest felt like it was being squeezed, he could see Race’s cheeks turning red under all the grime on his face.
With his own sleeve, he wiped the dirt off his face. “Y-you don’t wanna be catchin’ any diseases and whatnot from all that dirt.”
Race stumbled against the wall. You could feel the awkwardness in the air which made the birds from earlier fly far far away.
“Er. Sorry if I startled you-“ Spot spoke, his gaze against the floor.
“It’s okay.” Race muttered.
After a few moments of silence Race stretched.
“You wanna go get somethin’ to eat? I had some money saved up. And somehtin’ tells me I’m gonna be earning a good amount soon.”
Spot smiled slightly as he took a breath of relief, “Free food? Pshh. Ofcourse I wanna.”
