Chapter 1: padawan

Chapter Text

The Jedi temple was quiet this late into the night, with only the temple guard and the occasional Jedi roaming the halls. Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas was wandering the temple's empty halls having woken up from a vision and was unable to fall asleep again. The seer made his way to the room of a thousand fountains, even though he was more connected to the cosmic force; the tranquil room, filled with the living force, was a good way to settle himself. While on his way to his favorite secluded spot amongst the lush gardens, Sifo-Dyas spotted one of the temple's younglings sprawled out on a bench. The little boy was twitching and felt like how people described himself when experiencing a vision. Knowing intimately how offal visions feel, the Jedi master picked up the small boy, took him to a secluded corner, and brought him into meditation with the use of the Force. While in meditation, Sifo-Dyas viewed the vision alongside the youngling. The Jedi master could feel the boy's force presence relax slightly after he realized that he wasn’t alone.

The unlikely pair woke up late the next morning having fallen asleep at some point during the meditation. The youngling was surprisingly heavy despite his size Sifo-Dyas knew that he would have had some issues with the boy sleeping on him if he himself didn’t come from a near human race that was built more sturdy. The little one slowly gained consciousness when he realized that he was laying on someone he woke up in an instant and bolted backwards panicking. Sifo-Dyas wouldn’t allow that to continue and brought the boy back into his lap, “it’s okay young one, I get visions as well.”

This shocked the boy, “Really! But master Yoda says that the future is always in motion and that I need to meditate with the living force more.”

“He says that to me as well but he never takes my visions seriously."

The youngling looked dejected. It was adorable and sad to see that look on a child’s face, “I thought they would believe me when I got older. I know what I see is real, I told master Yoda about Quinlan breaking his leg in the exact same way he ended up doing.”

“That’s our burden to bear young one, I wish it wasn’t so.”

“Does this mean that I can’t become a Jedi like everyone keeps saying?”

Sifo-Dyas looks into the little boy's eyes concerned, no one should be saying that to a child. “You can still be a Jedi like me while still having visions. Would you allow me access to those memories of people saying that you can’t be a Jedi?”

As expected the youngling was hesitant but agreed the Jedi master pulled him into a joint meditation where they could share memories and visions. In exchange for the trust and memory’s Sifo-Dyas shared some of his more pleasant memories with the youngling.

Exiting the meditation, Sifo-Dyas realized that it was time for a late meal so he picked up the hungry boy and carried him to the mess hall. The seer could see the awe and joy on the little one’s face and it made his chest ache. Has no one picked up this child? Has no one shown him open displays of love? Through experience Sifo-Dyas calmed down quickly so that no one noticed his rage at the younglings' situation. Having made up his mind, the Jedi master asked a question that would change the course of history without them even knowing it, “little one would you honor me and become my padawan?”

The little boy stared at him in shock before smiling brightly with tears starting to roll down his round cheeks, “yes.”

With their training bond in place Sifo-Dyas braided a short padawan braid into Obi-Wan’s short hair. “Little one, your hair feels like metal, do you know why?”

Obi-Wan frowned, “no master. I’ve noticed that it goes greenish when I’m in water. One of the padawans on duty shaved it all off when they couldn't get the green to go away.”

“Let’s go to the healers and get a full work up. I’ll stay with you the whole time besides I’m in need of my check ups anyways.”

When the pair walked into the halls of healing they were almost instantly accosted by Vacura Che the head medic, “what happened? Where are you injured?"

Both master and padawan winced, “is it so shocking that we’re here for check ups?”

The medic put her hands on her hips and glared down her nose at them, “yes.”

Master Sifo-Dyas winced in guilt remembering all of the times he avoided the halls of healing. “Well my padawan needed a full check up since his file is not adding up with what I have seen.”

“You have a padawan? I thought the counsel forbid it.”

“They did but I’m ignoring them. It's the will of the force.”

Vacura Che burst into laughter having heard that phrase used by grandmaster Yoda and his lineage more than a thousand times. “Come on sweety let’s get you a check up.”Sifo-Dyas picked up Obi-Wan to put him on the examination table. Looking through the results of the test the Twi-lek frowned, “he’s a almost full blooded stewjoni with bits of Tong ancestry. The Tong ancestry is probably what makes him more passionate and the Stewjoni ancestry will cause him to have a high sex drive and be rather flexible. The other differences for standard near humans will be that Obi-Wan has two livers, three kidneys, copper hair, both male and female reproductive organs and pheromones. To my knowledge the little the Jedi have on stewjon was gathered by Tarre Vizsla from mandalor’s ancient texts. They closed themselves off from the rest of the galaxy and allegedly changed the strength of their gravity to keep others from selling them as pleasure slaves. Moving forward you will have to eat different food so that you're properly nourished and you will be getting weighted clothes to simulate the gravity back on your home world. It’s easy to make the gravity in your quarters the right amount.”

“Thank you master.”

“That’s my job dear one, your health and safety is all I care about. I’ll have your new robes and vitamins delivered to your new quarters with master Sifo-Dyas.”

The temple engineers set the gravity in the quarters to gradually get stronger so that both master and padawan would have time to adjust to the feeling. The pair let out a sigh of relief at the stronger gravity feeling a bit more solid on their feet and not like they were going to float away. Thinking of this Obi-Wan got an idea, “master could we use the force to stay levitated or weigh us down?”

The master thought this over, “yes I’m sure we can give it a try but first let’s make a pile of pillows so that our landings will be comfortable.”

It took a week for them to figure out how to master the art of floating. This led to the giggling pair spending multiple nights floating around the apartment in total bliss while the force sang around them happily. They woke up the next morning to a loud knocking on their front door. The pair of seers grumbled as they groggily dislodged themselves from the tangle of blankets, pillows and limbs they ended up passing out in. Obi-Wan was still slightly floating from the night’s activity before and subconsciously tethered himself to his master's force signature so that even in sleep his floating body would follow the man. Sifo-Dyas smiled at his cute padawan who was curled in a blanket that was almost completely obscuring his face. Opening the door to reveal their unexpected guest, “Yan this is a surprise, I thought you were off planet.”

“I just got back. Now what’s this I hear about you taking in a padawan?”

“I did, he's still sleeping, come on in.” It was amusing to the seer when Yan Dooku stumbled upon entry into the room. “I forgot to mention the gravity in our quarters is rather strong and will only get worse.”

“Why?”

“My padawan is from a planet with a very strong gravitational pull and we’re replicating that so that he grows up like he’s supposed to. The medics have already made the plans for this.”

“That’s good to hear, I’m surprised that the counsel allowed you to take a padawan. They were very insistent that you didn’t last I checked.”

“They haven’t mentioned it and I bypassed them completely. The education course approves and that’s all that matters.”

“Sneaky.”

“So what brought you here, old friend?” While the masters chatted and caught up with each other, Obi-Wan settled on Sifo-Dyas’ thigh as he continued to sleep.

To the shock of those in  the know, it took the Jedi high council a year to notice that Sifo-Dyas had taken on a padawan learner. With Obi-Wan being so young the seer had stayed temple bound like he normally was and the pair would train in gravity controlled chambers which were rarely used. The older seer taught his padawan the lightsaber form of Soresu, while it being a defensive form it also had the benefit of you wearing out your opponent and was also more Jedi like since it wasn’t meant to hurt anyone, not that it couldn’t. The young padawan also learned how to use other weapons just in case. Like his master, Obi-Wan had three hidden knives on his person at all times.

In the council chambers Obi-Wan stood beside his master. Jedi knight Ki Adi Mundi was the first one to address them, “Sifo-Dyas this council had forbidden you from taking a padawan. You have ignored a direct order and done so anyway.”

The seer was serene when he said, “it was the will of the force who am I to refuse.” Muffled laughter filled the chamber as Yoda’s favorite phrase was used against him.

“To young kenobi is. Poor his shielding will be. Nightmares he will have because of you.”

The young padawan bristled, “with all do respect master but I also get visions and while we have been together it’s lessened the effects seeing the possible futures have on us. You know about my visions. I told you about them and my shielding is one of the best. That's why Quinlan Vos was introduced to me early on in my time here at the temple.”

Yan smirked glad that his training about politics hadn’t completely left the young boy, “might I ask why now that the council has decided to step in when their partnership is going smoothly?”

Mace Windu glared at Dooku who had come on his own without an invitation. “You know something don’t you?”

“Do you mean besides the fact that it's been slightly over a year since Obi-Wan has become my dear friend Sifo-Dyas’ padawan?” The chamber went into an uproar at the knowledge that this pairing had been right under their noses and many of them hadn’t noticed.

The older seer sighed and started walking out of the council chambers with Obi-Wan when Jedi master Plo Koon called out, “where are you going?” The keldor was deeply loved by many in the temple and he didn’t have any ill intent towards them.

“Children need routine and we reserved a training room. Good day we best be off.”
