Chapter Text

The wind whispered through the streets of Maretime Bay, carrying the salty scent of the sea with it. Gulls called overhead, and somewhere in the distance, a trolley bell chimed.

Inside the royal palace of Zephyr Heights, however, Zipp had other things on her mind.

She crouched beneath a window, carefully peering through the gap in the curtains.

“Hmmm…”

She glanced left.

Then right.

The coast was clear.

Slowly, she pushed the window open.

It creaked.

“Aah!”

Zipp caught herself before she fell, landing awkwardly on the floor.

A burst of static came through the earpiece tucked against her ear.

“So did you get it yet, Zipp?” Pipp asked.

“Almost.”

“Well, hurry uuuuup!”

Zipp rolled her eyes.

“On it. Maximum sneaky engaged.”

Zipp froze.

“Hey, Mom.”

A moment later, glass clinked.

Zipp slipped away with the object she’d come for.

“Mission accomplished!”

“Good!” Pipp replied through the radio. “Now fly fast!”

Zipp grinned.

“No problems with that.”

She launched herself through the window.

“Hey!”

“You gotta let it glow!”

“You gotta let it shine!”

Pipp’s voice carried across the morning air as she, Izzy, and Jazz sang together.

“Oh, let’s make our mark together…”

The song continued as the five friends went about their day, each increasingly comfortable with the extraordinary changes that had swept across Equestria.

Just months ago, Earth ponies, unicorns, and pegasi had lived apart.

Now they were learning how to live together again.

And, perhaps even more astonishingly, magic had returned.

A tiny pegasus suddenly darted across the street.

“Aah! Watch out!”

Zipp immediately took to the air.

“Heads up, everypony!”

She caught the young pegasus before she could collide with another pony and gently set her down.

“I’m so sorry,” the filly said. “Thank you, Princess Zipp.”

“Zipp,” Zipp corrected with a smile. “Just call me Zipp. And don’t worry about it. The magic from the Unity Crystals in the Brighthouse is new to all of us. It takes practice.”

The filly nodded gratefully and trotted away.

Zipp watched her go.

There was still so much everypony was learning.

That thought lingered in her mind as she returned to the Brighthouse.

“Should I start now, or…?”

Sunny stood nervously in front of a camera.

Pipp groaned.

“Where is she? I really wanted to use my—”

“Lucky microphone?” Zipp asked.

Izzy pointed excitedly.

“There she is!”

Pipp turned toward Sunny.

“What took you so long? Don’t tell me you were sneaking around the palace again.”

Zipp smiled sheepishly.

“You know, you can just enter through the main doors. It’s our house.”

“But if Mom knew I was there, I’d get stuck doing one of her random princess lessons.”

Pipp paused.

“Good point.”

She turned toward Sunny.

“Okay, Sunny. Just remember. Pretend you’re talking to us and not, like, all of Equestria, and you’ll do great.”

Sunny swallowed.

“Uhhh…”

Pipp grinned.

“You’re live…”

She pressed the button.

“…now!”

Sunny’s eyes widened.

“Like, now now?”

She looked directly into the camera.

“Uh… Hey, everypony! I’m Sunny Starscout, and I live here in Maretime Bay with my friends.”

She laughed nervously.

“A lot has changed around here in the past few months. Maretime Bay used to be the place just us Earth ponies lived, just like how unicorns always stayed in Bridlewood and pegasi never left Zephyr Heights. But when we found the three Unity Crystals and brought them back together, it brought us back together, too!”

Her expression brightened.

“All pony kinds were reunited in friendship! Now anypony can live… anywhere!”

Sunny spread her forelegs.

“And we have magic again!”

She squealed.

Izzy immediately jumped into frame.

“Well, the unicorns and pegasi do.”

She performed a flourish with her magic.

“Ta-daaaah!”

Pipp bounced excitedly.

“Ooh, yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah! Turn into an alicorn!”

Sunny winced.

“Uh…”

“That’s an Earth pony, pegasus, and unicorn all in one!”

Sunny laughed nervously.

“You know it doesn’t really work like that, guys. I can’t just, uh…”

She hesitated.

“Anyway! The point is, magic powers or not, I think everypony can agree that our lives are way more magical now that we’re together again.”

Pipp smiled.

“You know iiiiit!”

Sunny continued.

“Okay! Do you like super fun times? Are you interested in learning more about Earth pony traditions and tasting local treats? Do you want to see ponies sing in a big concert?”

Izzy raised her hoof.

“Yes! You bet! And yeeees!”

Sunny laughed.

“Then you should come to our annual Maretime Bay Day Festival! For a day of fun in the sunshine! It’s going to be a blast! And I’m not just talking about the fireworks show.”

She grinned.

“All pony kinds are welcome!”

Hitch suddenly leaned into frame.

“Oh! Oh! I love Maretime Bay Day! You gotta come check it out! The live Maretime music! The sand castle contest! The caramel ponycorn! Ah! It’s the best!”

A bird swooped down.

“Hey!”

It snatched Hitch’s phone.

“Give that back!”

The others laughed.

The camera shook as everypony scrambled after him.

Zipp caught a runaway object in midair.

Izzy used her magic to retrieve another.

A trolley nearly ran into them.

For a moment, Maretime Bay was nothing but chaos.

And everypony was smiling.

Later, Posey Bloom stood beside her garden, staring unhappily at the damage.

Sunny approached.

“Is this about your flowers, Posey? It was an accident, but we’ll fix them right away.”

“No.”

Posey’s ears flattened.

“What I meant was that I wish magic had never come back.”

Sunny blinked.

Posey looked around.

“And I’m not the only pony around here who thinks so.”

“What do you mean?”

“You pegasi are always flying too fast! Or too low! Or too high up!”

Pipp frowned.

“What’s wrong with flying high up?”

“I just don’t like it, okay?!”

Posey stamped a hoof.

“And every time I’m at the market, there’s some smug unicorn using their magic to shop!”

She gestured indignantly.

“I almost got hit in the head by a bag of floating apples yesterday!”

Her gaze shifted toward Hitch.

“Magic is not very safe. At least not for the rest of us ponies who don’t have it. Right, Sheriff Hitch?”

Hitch hesitated.

“Uh… I don’t know if I would say that.”

Posey glared.

Sunny tried to intervene.

“Everypony’s just… still learning how to use it. That’s all. Magic takes practice.”

“Hmph.”

Posey turned away.

“Then they should do it somewhere else other than my garden!”

She slammed the door behind her.

Izzy stared.

“Okay, wow. She was really nice, right, guys?”

Pipp winced.

“Not exactly.”

Sunny looked at Posey’s closed door.

She understood that the return of magic hadn’t been easy for everypony.

But she didn’t yet understand just how much fear was beneath that resentment.

Inside the Brighthouse, Izzy excitedly led Pipp downstairs.

“I want to show you something!”

Pipp followed.

“So what did you want to show me?”

Izzy smiled proudly.

“Well, I don’t know if you noticed, but I consider myself a bit of an artist.”

Pipp looked around at the assortment of creations.

“Of course I noticed. All of this beautiful stuff was made by you. You’re so creative, Izzy. And you’re amazing at making new things out of old things.”

She gasped.

“What do you call it again?”

“Uni-cycling!”

“Uni-cycling! Yes!”

Izzy opened a dusty box.

“So, the other day, when I was searching for my box of googly eyes in the basement, I found this.”

Pipp’s eyes widened.

“Is that Sunny’s old lantern?”

“Her dad made it for her when she was a filly!”

Izzy smiled.

“So I thought…”

Pipp immediately understood.

“That you’d fix it up for her as a Maretime Bay Day present?”

“Yup.”

Izzy held up a hoof.

“But shhh! It has to be a surprise!”

Pipp squealed.

“I love surprises! Your secret is safe with me.”

The two touched hooves.

“Hoof to heart.”

At lunchtime, Zipp barely touched her pizza.

Pipp waved a hoof in front of her face.

“Zipp? Zipp! ZIPP!”

“Huh?”

“I have been asking you if you want extra cheese on your pizza for, like, ten minutes! What’s up with you?”

Zipp sighed.

“Sorry. Just thinking about something weird that happened earlier.”

“The thing with Posey?”

“Oh. Uh… yeah. That.”

Sunny frowned.

“How could she not love magic?”

Hitch shrugged.

“Earth ponies have never had magic before. Maybe Posey’s jealous.”

“Jealous?” Pipp asked.

Hitch nodded.

“I know I am. Magic seems a little scary, but it would be pretty cool to be able to levitate things.”

Izzy grinned.

“Like this?”

Her magic lifted Hitch’s plate.

Then his drink.

Then his chair.

“Whoa! Whoops!”

Everything crashed down.

The others burst out laughing.

Izzy licked frosting off her hoof.

“Mmm! Worth it!”

Pipp laughed.

“Ah, you’re right, Hitch. That is soooo much better than flying.”

Zipp’s smile faded.

“So have you figured out the whole ‘magical wings and horn appearing at random times’ thing yet?”

Sunny shook her head.

“No. And it’s been getting worse.”

As if to prove the point, her horn suddenly appeared.

A burst of magic sent her flying backward.

“Whoa!”

She crashed into a pile of cushions.

Zipp stared.

“Maybe Posey has a point.”

Sunny frowned.

“Magic is unpredictable.”

She looked at her reflection in the window.

But after a moment, determination returned to her face.

“It may be unpredictable, but it’s not dangerous.”

She raised her head.

“We just need to show the Earth ponies that magic is nothing to be afraid of. It makes Equestria a… a better place.”

She smiled.

“And it’s fun!”

Izzy’s eyes widened.

“Wow! Are you ponies thinking what I’m thinking?”

“Floating parade?” Izzy guessed.

Sunny shook her head.

“Not exactly. We’re going to use Maretime Bay Day as our chance to show off all the amazing things magic can do!”

The others exchanged glances.

“Then everypony will remember just how special it is that we have friendship and magic in our lives again.”

Izzy raised her hoof.

“I’m in!”

“Definitely,” said Pipp.

“I’m in,” Hitch agreed.

Zipp smiled.

“Me too.”

That evening, Zipp received another call from Zephyr Heights.

“Zephyrina? Are you there?”

“Hi, Mom.”

Queen Haven’s face appeared on the screen.

“Oh! There you are. It’s been ages since I’ve seen my fillies!”

Zipp smiled awkwardly.

Queen Haven continued.

“At least Pipp answers her phone when I call her. You never do. And you haven’t visited Zephyr Heights at all.”

“Nope! You’re right! I definitely have not been to Zephyr Heights!”

She laughed nervously.

Queen Haven narrowed her eyes.

“Listen, Zipp, dear. I called because I’m going to need you to move back home, okay?”

Zipp’s smile vanished.

“What?! No! No way!”

“I know you’ve had your fun with your new friends and all, but you’re a princess, darling. You’re going to be queen one day.”

“I know.”

Zipp lowered her gaze.

“What about Pipp?”

“Your sister has her little salon project, and while I do like the idea of you being there to keep an eye on her, let’s face it, she livestreams everything, so that’s not really necessary.”

Queen Haven’s expression softened.

“You’re the one I need here. Studying my every move. Representing the royal family.”

Zipp looked toward the window.

“But I’m not sure if I’m ready to leave just yet.”

“And why wouldn’t you be?”

“Ummm…”

Zipp searched desperately for an excuse.

“There’s a festival soon?”

Queen Haven considered this.

“I suppose festival planning counts as a useful skill for your future on the throne. As queen, you’ll be responsible for arranging state dinners, teas, parties…”

Zipp suddenly imitated static.

“Uh-oh! You’re… breaking… up!”

The screen went dark.

Zipp sighed.

Sunny had been listening from nearby.

“Everything okay?”

Zipp sat down.

“I love it here in Maretime Bay so much. I don’t want to leave yet.”

“Leave?”

“Go back to Zephyr Heights.”

She looked conflicted.

“I’m not ready to become a full-time, heir-to-the-throne princess yet. Not the way my mom expects me to be anyway.”

She glanced toward her friends.

“But I’m not sure I fit in here either.”

“Of course you do!”

“Even if all I do is fly around and try out new moves?”

Sunny smiled.

“It’s what you love to do! As Izzy would say…”

She adopted Izzy’s voice.

“‘It makes your sparkle shine really bright!’”

Zipp chuckled.

“Maybe my mom is right. Maybe I should just go back to Zephyr Heights and really try to be the kind of princess everypony is hoping for.”

She sighed.

“I’m going to have to do it someday.”

Sunny nodded.

“At least stay until Maretime Bay Day. Then you can decide.”

Zipp smiled.

“Okay. Yeah. I guess I can’t miss that.”

“Now come on. We have a festival to plan, and it needs your magic, too.”

Zipp followed.

Neither noticed the brief flicker of magical energy in the Brighthouse behind them.

Over the next few days, the preparations continued.

Sunny explained the traditional ribbon wreaths.

Izzy enthusiastically added spoons.

Pipp suggested incorporating unicorn and pegasus designs.

But Zipp was increasingly distracted.

“Anypony seen Zipp?” Sunny asked.

Zipp appeared behind them.

“What’s with all the spoons?”

Izzy explained.

“Do you want to try?”

“Uh… decorating things isn’t really my strong point.”

“Baking Bay Day treats?”

“Not very good at baking.”

“Write a song for the big concert?” Pipp offered.

“You used to love writing song lyrics with me.”

Zipp looked away.

“I-I don’t think so.”

She walked away.

Sunny watched her go.

Something was wrong.

But Zipp wasn’t ready to explain.

At the sheriff’s station, Hitch was having a very different sort of morning.

“Good morning, station! Sheriff Hitch here, reporting for duty! At ease, deputies!”

He broke into song.

“Which Sheriff-y things should we do today in Maretime Bay?”

Zipp walked in.

“Oof. Are you trying to rhyme?”

Hitch’s ears drooped.

“Yeah. What did you think?”

“Way too much.”

“Cool. Cool. Just trying something out. Didn’t work. Good feedback.”

He cleared his throat.

“So what can I do for you?”

Zipp hesitated.

“I came by because… well…”

She looked toward the window.

“Have you seen anything… strange lately?”

“Strange?”

“Well…”

She stopped.

“You know what? It was probably nothing. Forget it.”

Hitch suddenly brightened.

“Wait! I know what this is about.”

“You do?”

“Yup. You’re bored!”

Zipp stared.

“But you don’t have to be shy. We’re pals! We can totally hang out!”

He started listing possibilities.

“Fries from three different diners. A puzzle. Maybe—”

The telephone rang.

Hitch answered.

“Sheriff station. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. I see. Really? How strange. At the beach?”

His expression became serious.

“I’ll be right there.”

He hung up.

“It appears we have a Code Eight-Eighteen at the beach. Want to come on a trot-along with me, Zipp?”

The door closed.

Hitch looked around.

“Aaaand I’m talking to nopony.”

At the beach, a dispute had erupted.

An Earth pony pointed angrily at a unicorn.

“You did it on purpose!”

“I did not!”

“I saw you use your magic to drop your umbrella onto my sand castle!”

“I was carrying it, and then my magic just went away!”

“I don’t believe you!”

Hitch stepped between them.

“Okay, okay. Is everypony all right?”

The unicorn looked terrified.

“Sheriff Hitch! I promise I didn’t mean to ruin everything! My magic…”

The Earth pony glared at her ruined castle.

“I worked on that all day!”

Zipp watched silently.

Then her eyes narrowed.

She pulled out her notebook.

“Thursday, noon. Beach. Second magical mishap. Levitation glitch. Unicorn drops umbrella. Lots of upset ponies.”

She looked up.

“Very strange.”

While Sunny and the others prepared for Maretime Bay Day, Zipp investigated.

She checked the Unity Crystals.

She monitored magical fluctuations.

She recorded every incident.

Then, as she watched the crystals, she noticed something.

Her eyes widened.

“What in the wingfeathers?”

She rushed upstairs.

The others followed.

“What happened?” Hitch asked.

“Just hurry!”

They reached the top of the Brighthouse.

Vines crawled across the wall.

They glowed faintly.

Pipp stared.

“Glowing vines?”

Zipp swallowed.

“Okay. I have a confession.”

She looked at the crystals.

“I’ve been monitoring them, and I think something is wrong.”

Sunny immediately shook her head.

“What? No, there isn’t.”

“None of you have noticed that magic seems kinda weird lately? Like it keeps switching off or something?”

Izzy blinked.

“Nope!”

“Me neither,” Pipp agreed.

Zipp looked incredulous.

“Really?”

She turned to Hitch.

“I saw what happened at the beach the other day. Didn’t you take—”

“What?! I didn’t take anything at the beach!”

Zipp stared.

“…down a report?”

“Oh.”

Hitch laughed nervously.

“Right. A report. Actually, that reminds me. Gotta go file that report!”

He hurried away.

Zipp watched him.

“You wait a second!”

But he was gone.

Eventually, Zipp’s investigation became too difficult to hide.

At Mane Melody, Pipp tried to help her relax.

“Don’t you ponies love it here?”

Izzy nodded enthusiastically.

“Yeah-huh!”

Sunny smiled.

“Mm-hmm!”

Zipp forced a smile.

“Yeah. It’s awesome. Pipp has done a great job here.”

Pipp brightened.

“You really think so?”

“Yeah.”

Zipp hesitated.

“And, hey, I’m sorry if I haven’t been helping out. My mind’s just on other things.”

Pipp sighed.

“Like the Crystals?”

Zipp nodded.

“Something weird is going on.”

“You worry too, too much.”

“But if something happens to those Crystals, we’ll lose magic again for good. Then it’ll be no more flying and—”

“Sis, sis, sis, sis, sis, sis, sis.”

Pipp gently pushed Zipp back into the chair.

“You need to chill.”

She gestured around the salon.

“Nothing is going to happen. We’ve got our friends back, we’ve got magic back, and we’ve got…”

Pipp, Jazz, and Rocky began singing.

“Muuuuusiiiiic!”

Zipp’s expression remained troubled.

When the song ended, she finally snapped.

“You don’t get it, do you?! We can’t just sing a song and ignore everything!”

The room went quiet.

“If we lose magic this time, we may never get it back again! And it’ll be our fault.”

The others stared at her.

Before anypony could respond, a crash sounded outside.

A pegasus had fallen from the sky.

Windy groaned.

“I… I don’t know. I was just flying along, and the next thing I knew, I was down here on the ground.”

Dapple rubbed her head.

“Yeah, me too. Because you fell on us.”

Windy looked horrified.

“I’m normally such a good flier.”

Posey stepped forward.

“Clearly you’re not.”

Her voice carried through the gathering crowd.

“This is what I’ve been saying. What everypony has been thinking.”

She pointed upward.

“If pegasi and unicorns can’t be respectful, then they shouldn’t be allowed to use their magic in Maretime Bay!”

A few ponies murmured agreement.

“She’s right!”

“No more magic!”

Posey raised her voice.

“It isn’t fair! We Earth ponies don’t get any magic, and then the ponies that do have it don’t even know how to use it! Or they use it to prank us!”

Sunny stepped forward.

“Everypony, wait!”

“And now they want to ruin our special Earth pony holiday, too!”

“That’s not true!”

“We want it to be the best day ever!” Izzy protested.

“Then Maretime Bay Day should be magic-free!”

The crowd began shouting.

Thunder rolled overhead.

Zipp stared at the storm.

And suddenly, everything clicked.

“I think I finally know what’s happening to magic.”

Sunny turned.

“You do?”

Zipp looked toward the crystals.

“They might be powered by ponies.”

Hitch blinked.

“Whaaaaat?”

Zipp demonstrated.

She told Pipp an embarrassing secret.

Pipp gasped.

She admitted she hated karaoke.

Izzy gasped even louder.

Sunny defended Zipp.

Hitch tried to mediate.

The argument escalated.

Then—fizzle.

Everypony froze.

The crystals flickered.

Zipp’s eyes widened.

“You were right.”

Sunny stared at them.

Izzy slowly lowered her hoof.

“So, when ponies aren’t treating each other with kindness…”

Pipp finished:

“When we aren’t vibing…”

Zipp nodded.

“The Crystals get weaker. And the more unstable magic becomes in Equestria.”

Sunny’s expression changed.

“Which causes pegasi to lose their flight…”

Hitch added:

“And unicorns to drop stuff onto sandcastles.”

Pipp looked toward the sky.

“And weather changes!”

Another thunderclap answered her.

“Everything is all out of whack!”

Sunny stared at the crystals.

“I wonder if this had anything to do with why the Crystals were separated all those years ago.”

She lowered her head.

“Or why I still can’t seem to figure out my alicorn magic.”

Zipp stepped closer.

“I don’t know.”

Then she smiled.

“But I want to find out.”

She looked around at her friends.

“But if we want to keep magic in Equestria, first we need to get everypony back on the same page.”

Sunny nodded.

“Zipp’s right.”

She looked toward Maretime Bay.

“We can’t give up. We can still make Bay Day the celebration it’s supposed to be.”

“A day of friendship!” Izzy said.

“And harmony!” Pipp added.

Hitch smiled.

“Let’s do it.”

The five friends touched hooves.

“Hoof to heart!”

Morning arrived.

“The big day is here!” Izzy shouted.

Pipp yawned.

Zipp rubbed her eyes.

“Don’t worry. I got you.”

Izzy turned toward Sunny.

“Sunny! Sunny, wait! Happy Maretime Bay Day!”

Sunny blinked.

“We don’t usually exchange gifts.”

“I know. But just open it!”

Sunny tore away the wrapping.

She froze.

Her father’s lantern stared back at her.

“It’s…”

Her voice caught.

“It’s the lantern my dad made for me.”

She looked at Izzy.

“I thought it was beyond repair.”

Izzy smiled.

“Sometimes, when you add a little bit of magic, you can fix anything.”

Sunny hugged her.

“Thank you.”

She looked toward the festival grounds.

“Now let’s go add some magic to today and fix this.”

Maretime Bay Day began beautifully.

Ribbon wreaths decorated the streets.

Music filled the air.

Food stands crowded the boardwalk.

Ponies from all three tribes mingled together.

Even Queen Haven had arrived.

Izzy gasped.

“Look! Ponies showed up after all!”

Then she spotted the royal carriage.

“And there’s the queen!”

Trumpets sounded.

The crowd cheered.

Sunny smiled.

“Happy Maretime Bay Day, everypony! Welcome!”

Hitch looked around.

“So far, so good.”

Sunny nodded.

“Now we just gotta keep it up.”

But beneath the celebration, old tensions remained.

Dahlia complained about the spoons.

Posey agreed.

Pegasi demonstrated aerial tricks.

Some Earth ponies muttered that they had an unfair advantage.

The unicorns used their magic.

Some ponies applauded.

Others grumbled.

The friends exchanged nervous looks.

Then thunder boomed.

A pegasus suddenly plummeted from the sky.

Another magical mishap followed.

Then another.

The Unity Crystals flickered.

Pipp’s wings stopped working.

“My wings won’t work!”

Hitch’s hooves locked in place.

“Neither will my hooves!”

Earth ponies screamed as their hooves became stuck.

Zipp stared at the crystals.

“The glitches! They’re getting worse!”

Sunny looked toward Pipp.

“Are you sure you want to do this? Nothing has gone to plan today.”

Pipp lifted her microphone.

“I have to give it my best shot.”

She smiled.

“We still need all the positivity we can get, right?”

Zipp handed her the microphone.

“Maybe this will help.”

Pipp gasped.

“My lucky mic!”

She warmed up.

“Showtiiiiime!”

Sunny stepped onto the stage.

“Everypony, please welcome pop star Princess Pipp Petals to sing the brand-new Maretime Bay Day song!”

The crowd murmured.

Then Dahlia called out:

“We want to hear the real Maretime Bay song! Sung by an Earth pony!”

The crowd began to turn.

Sunny stepped forward.

“We know that magic returning hasn’t been easy for everypony.”

She looked around.

“We know Equestria is really different.”

Her smile returned.

“But that’s a good thing! It’s so much better now that—”

Thunder exploded overhead.

Sunny staggered.

The crystals flickered violently.

“No…”

The light drained away.

“The magic…”

She stared in horror.

“It’s dying!”

Lightning struck.

Hitch suddenly looked toward the Brighthouse.

“Eggy!”

A blast of energy struck the mysterious dragon egg he’d been protecting.

The ground shook.

A dark void tore open.

Queen Haven recoiled.

“What is that thing?!”

Zipp’s eyes widened.

“It’s some sort of void!”

“Everypony, get back!”

Ponies screamed.

But many were trapped.

“Please let us go!”

“It’s not us!”

Posey struggled against the force.

“Can’t you ponies with magic do something?!”

Windy shook her head.

“Our magic isn’t working!”

The ground gave way.

Posey and Windy fell toward the void.

“Posey!”

Sunny rushed forward.

“Windy!”

She tried to transform.

Nothing happened.

“Alicorn magic!”

Nothing.

Sunny gritted her teeth.

“Then I’ll have to try without it!”

She charged toward the void.

“I’m going in!”

“Not without us!” Izzy shouted.

Zipp looked around.

Then she realized.

“The magic will come back to us if we can work together!”

She turned toward the frightened crowd.

“Come on, unicorns!”

Then toward the pegasi.

“Come on, pegasi!”

“Help the Earth ponies!”

Ponies began pulling together.

Unicorns used what little magic remained.

Pegasi pushed against the debris.

Earth ponies pulled their friends to safety.

The crystals began glowing.

Zipp gasped.

“It’s working!”

She looked toward Sunny.

“You got this!”

Izzy handed Sunny the repaired lantern.

“It’s too dark in there! Take this!”

Sunny plunged into the darkness.

Posey and Windy screamed.

Sunny reached them.

She grabbed them both.

“Come on!”

A burst of light erupted.

For a moment, there was silence.

Then—Sunny emerged.

She landed on the ground.

The void vanished.

The Unity Crystals blazed.

Magic surged through Equestria.

Hitch laughed as the energy tickled his hooves.

Then he heard something.

A bird chirped.

Hitch froze.

The bird chirped again.

Hitch’s jaw dropped.

“I know, I know! I totally agree with everything you guys are saying.”

He blinked.

“Did you just… talk?!”

The bird chirped.

“Did I just… understand you?!”

His eyes widened.

“Whaaaaaat?!”

The bird continued.

“Wow. That’s a lot of information.”

Hitch smiled.

“Well, nice to meet you, Kenneth. I’m Hitch!”

Nearby, Posey stared as flowers erupted around her hooves.

“Flower… power?”

Her eyes widened.

Sunny stared at her own hooves.

“Earth pony magic?”

Izzy gasped.

“But that’s never happened before!”

Zipp smiled.

“When we work together, maybe we can invent new magic.”

Sunny looked at Zipp.

She finally understood.

“You’re right.”

She stepped closer.

“Actually, you were right about everything.”

Zipp smiled.

“Sunny…”

“I’m sorry I didn’t believe you. I should’ve been a better friend and listened.”

Sunny lowered her head.

“I was so focused on hoping magic was okay that I lost sight of everything else.”

She looked up.

“Can you forgive me?”

Zipp chuckled.

“Obviously.”

They hugged.

Queen Haven approached her daughter.

“Zephyrina! There you are! My hoofness, what an ordeal!”

She gathered herself.

“Gather your things. We need to hit the sky if we’re going to make it back to the palace by sundown.”

Zipp shook her head.

“Mom! I’m not going back with you.”

Queen Haven blinked.

“We agreed that you were to resume your studies.”

“My place is here in Maretime Bay with my friends.”

Zipp stood tall.

“I just need more time to figure things out. To investigate magic. To explore who I am before I take on my royal duty.”

She smiled.

“And you know what? I think who I am is somepony who likes figuring things out.”

Queen Haven smiled.

“Yes, you certainly are, my little princess investigator.”

“Mom?”

“Anything, darling.”

“Would you mind just calling me Zipp for now?”

Queen Haven smiled.

“Of course… Zipp.”

Hitch returned to the Brighthouse.

He stared at the dragon egg.

“So…”

A crack appeared.

Hitch leaned closer.

The shell broke apart.

A tiny dragon emerged.

Sparky Sparkeroni blinked up at him.

“Coos?”

Hitch’s jaw dropped.

“A dragon…?”

Sunny stared.

“But dragons haven’t been seen in Equestria for generations!”

Izzy’s eyes sparkled.

“He’s so cute!”

Pipp squealed.

“Adorbs!”

Hitch carefully lifted the tiny dragon.

Sparky curled against him.

Hitch’s expression softened.

“Okay, little guy.”

He smiled.

“I don’t know where you came from.”

He glanced toward the others.

“But we’ll figure it out.”

Posey approached the group.

“Hey, everypony.”

She looked embarrassed.

“I just wanted to say I’m sorry for the way I acted.”

Zipp smiled.

“I think you felt left out.”

Posey nodded.

“Yeah. Exactly.”

Sunny stepped closer.

“We’ll make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

The others nodded.

Posey hesitated.

“Pipp?”

“Yeah?”

“Would you mind… singing your new Maretime Bay song?”

Pipp smiled.

“I will on one condition.”

Posey looked curious.

“If you’ll sing it with me.”

Posey smiled.

“I’ll do the harmony.”

The music began.

For the first time that day, Maretime Bay truly felt united.

Far away from the celebration, in a quiet chamber surrounded by ancient relics, Opaline Arcana watched the restored magic spreading across Equestria.

She had felt the disturbance.

The old magic had surged, faltered, nearly collapsed—and then returned stronger than before.

Opaline stood silently before an ancient image of Twilight Sparkle.

For centuries, she had carried complicated feelings about the mare who had once ruled Equestria.

Frustration.

Admiration.

Regret.

And, now, something approaching wonder.

Five ponies.

Five very different ponies.

They had taken magic that had been broken for generations and found a way to make it work again.

Opaline’s expression softened.

“Five ponies? Harmony doesn’t return that easily.”

She looked toward the distant glow.

“But…”

A small smile appeared.

“Twilight Sparkle was right.”

She shook her head with a quiet, almost incredulous laugh.

“Twilight Sparkle… you stubborn foal… you actually did it.”

Her eyes lingered on the ancient image.

Twilight’s final legacy hadn’t been some perfect system that would last forever.

It had been something much harder.

A foundation that could survive even when the ponies who built it were gone.

Opaline looked back towards Maretime Bay.

The new generation was only beginning to discover what that meant.

And, for once, she didn’t feel the need to interfere.

She simply watched.

Back in Maretime Bay, Zipp admired the decorations.

“You think so?”

Pipp smiled.

“We’re so glad you’re staying in Maretime Bay, ‘Detective Zipp’!”

Zipp laughed.

“Me, too.”

She looked toward the Unity Crystals.

“We have a lot to learn about magic and how it works.”

Sunny nodded.

“And I definitely still have a loooot of questions.”

She glanced at her horn.

“Like why does my alicorn magic disappear?”

Hitch raised a hoof.

“Yeah! Like why do I now have the magical power to understand every animal except for this adorable baby dragon?”

Sparky cooed.

Hitch’s face scrunched.

Everyone laughed.

Zipp looked towards the horizon.

“Or where did magic come from?”

Her expression became thoughtful.

“Who made the Crystals anyway? How did they get separated? Why didn’t Earth ponies have magic before?”

Sunny smiled.

“So many questions.”

Izzy gasped.

“But at least we already know one thing for sure.”

Sunny looked at her.

“What’s that?”

Sunny glanced at her friends.

“No matter what lies ahead…”

She smiled.

“We’ll face it together.”

The others gathered around her.

“Together!”

And beneath the restored light of the Unity Crystals, the newest generation of Equestria stepped into an uncertain future—not knowing exactly what awaited them, but knowing they would meet it side by side.
