Pretty "Boy"

Summary:

Morgie 💜

Work Text:

Morgie was a boy.
Definitely.
Totally.
Completely.
A boy.

Okay so maybe he wasn't.
It was one of those things that Morgie never really figured out. He didn't mind being a boy, not too much anyway but he didn't always feel like that. There were times when being called a boy felt like having his heart twisted around in all the wrong ways.

He liked it when someone who hadn't looked closely enough called him “they”. He liked the idea of being neither and both. It was fun, amusing, and kind of right.
He liked letting Maleficent paint his nails and he liked pulling his hoodie over his face so that somebody could mistake him as a girl, he liked it when Uliana got bored and braided little pieces of his hair, even if she pulled a bit too hard sometimes.
He liked it when people took a moment to realize he was a boy.
He liked it when Hook called him a “weird little thing” because it wasn't the same as being called a boy or a girl.
It was all dreadfully confusing.

“Hi, Uli.”
Uliana stared at him tiredly. “What do you want?”
Morgie pursed his lips. “Just to..sit.”
She rolled her eyes but opened the door anyway. Morgie slipped inside instantly, sitting against her headboard and waiting before he started.
“Do you ever feel like a girl?”
“I am a girl, Morgs.” Uliana yawned, settling down beside him.
“Yeah but…do you ever feel like you aren't either, I guess? Like you're all of them but none of them at the same time?”
“No.”
“Oh.”
Of course she didn't. Why would she?
“Do you have something to tell me, Morgs?”
Morgie's face burned. “I don't know- maybe?”
Uliana raised an eyebrow. “Well then?”
“I want to be a girl sometimes.”
He braced himself for laughter, for some kind of mocking. Instead Uliana just nodded sagely. “Anything else?”
“But sometimes I don't feel like I'm a boy or a girl and sometimes I feel like I'm both.”
Surely she was going to laugh now, tell him that he was being ridiculous.
But she just nodded again. “Okay.”
“Okay?” Morgie repeated.
“Okay.” She assured him. “Now budge over so I can lay down.”

Morgie stared at the ceiling for the longest time, thinking about being a boy and being a girl and being nothing and everything.

So dreadfully confusing.
