Tweety flew in the core of the desert, a mission in his heart. He may have been back with Sylvester, Dr. Lorre, and Granny now, but there was still one loose end to tie up.
Even now, Tweety still felt his heart twist in guilt every time he thought about it. How he had helped ACME try to nab an unsuspecting bird, who would likely do unspeakable things to him if they actually managed to catch him. Tweety was honestly GLAD ACME had failed. No one deserved to be caught by ACME. Especially the Road Runner.
His eyes scanned the horizon, searching for a familiar blue. After a few seconds, he managed to catch a cloud of dust being chased by a blur of brown.
Flying down a little closer, Tweety could hear the familiar joyous cry of "Beep Beep!" The coyote (the same one Tweety had tried to end, he remembered guiltily) was after him, keeping a steady pace behind him as he completely focused on his singular goal of catching the bird.
Tweety thought about how he was going to stop them. Thinking to himself for a bit, a literal lightbulb appeared over his head, dulled a bit by the mechanics of what the canary had planned. It was risky, he had to admit, but he might be able to full it off.
Bracing himself, Tweety dived down forward in a manner akin to a diving plane, putting himself right in front of the speeding roadrunner.
"Wait!" Tweety got right in front of them, closing his eyes as he prepared to be possibly run over.
Only the flattening never came.
Road Runner dug his heels into the ground, stopping himself just in time before he could hit Tweety. Wile E, who had been keeping up behind the roadrunner, nearly slammed into Roadie only for Roadie to step aside right at the perfect moment, allowing Wile E to stop more steadily and regain his bearings.
Seeing the canary in front of him, Roadie cocked his head, confused at why this tiny bird was now in his and Wile E's side of the desert. Roadie didn't recall seeing him much...but his eyes widened as he suddenly realized this was the same bird that had been watching and lying in wait with ACME. The very same bird that had helped set the trap meant for him. He instantly became suspicious. What could he want now?
Wile E had a similar reaction, narrowing his eyes and crossed his arms. This was the same bird that had tried to kill him and Kevin in Washington DC. He had no idea what this bird wanted...but he didn't trust him one bit.
He was even less happy that his and Roadie's eternal chase had been interrupted. No one just...stopped him and Roadie! Especially not some small, measly yellow avian that wasn't even worthy of being called 'dinner.'
Tweety sighed in relief at having caught their attention, but held back a wince at the looks on their faces. They did NOT look happy. Tweety knew they had every right not to be.
"...I know the both of you have every reason to not want to see me." Tweety began carefully. "But....I wanted to apologize."
Wile E raised an eyebrow, holding out a sign and placing a hand on his hip. "YOU? APOLOGIZE?"
"Yes."
Roadie pulled out a sign of his own. "I'M NOT CONVINCED."
Tweety smiled ruefully. "Wasn't expecting you to be." That smile turned into a frown again as he let out a deep breath before he continued with, "What I wanted to say was...I'm sorry. I'm sorry for what ACME tried to do. I should have stopped it. I'm sorry for intruding on your space, Mr Runner. And....." he turned to Wile E, a sad, apologetic look in his eye. "I'm...I'm ESPECIALLY sorry for...trying to kill you, Mr. Coyote."
Roadie stared. A long, deep stare. He and Wile E turned to each other, sharing a knowing look between them. Tweety prepared himself for how they would react next. He expected anger, being reprimanded, or worse...outright being ATTACKED.
Roadie's gaze broke away from Wile E, turning back to the canary, and stepping closer. Just a single step, but that step carried shockwaves across the entire desert. Tweety closed his eyes, steeling himself for what Roadie to do next....
Only for Roadie to let out a 'Beep Beep!" Tweety wasn't fluent in roadrunner language, so he slowly opened an eye to see what Roadie's face could tell him that meant...and to his surprise, there was a smile on Roadie's face, a wing stretched out to Tweety.
"You're....not mad at me?" Tweety asked carefully, tendrils of worry still wrapping around him.
Roadie shook his head and held up a sign. "YOU CAME ALL THIS WAY JUST TO APOLOGIZE." He flipped the sign over. It read "IT'S CLEAR TO ME YOU'RE BETTER THAN ACME."
He pulled out another sign, his smile growing. "I FORGIVE YOU."
Wile E, who hadn't said a word the entire time, sighed and held up a sign of his own. "IF ROAD RUNNER FORGIVES YOU..." He turned the sign over to have it read "THEN I SUPPOSE I DO TOO."
The last strands of worry slowly fell away from Tweety, the canary letting out a small smile of his own. Reaching out, he took Roadie's wing into his own. "I guess that means....friends?"
Roadie beamed, shaking Tweety's wing. "FRIENDS." His smile suddenly grew sly as he signed, "AND THERE"S CLEARLY A SPECIAL SOMEONE OF YOUR OWN."
Tweety blushed. How did he...?!
Wile E also knew who Roadie seemed to be talking about. He looked at Roadie knowingly, signing with "YES. A BLACK AND WHITE CAT, IF I RECALL. WE WORKED TOGETHER ONCE." He signed again. "HE MENTIONED A CANARY HE HAD HIS EYES ON."
Tweety fondly rolled his eyes. Oh, Sylvester. Always focused on him even when chasing other prey. He teasingly noted, "And what you two have together isn't any different?"
THAT stopped the two of them in their tracks completely. Wile E and Roadie instantly diverted their gazes from each other, light blushes on each of their faces. Roadie recovered quicker, a sudden competitive gleam in his eyes as he signed. "TELL YOU WHAT? IF YOU CAN KEEP UP WITH US...I MIGHT LET YOU IN ON THE DETAILS."
Wile E's eyes grew fond for a moment before they turned mischievous as they locked onto Tweety. "UNLESS YOU'RE CHICKEN."
Tweety grinned back. He was liking these two more and more by the second. "Oh, you two are so on."
The roadrunner let out a cheerful 'Beep Beep!" clicking his heels together joyfully as he sped off down the road, Wile E and Tweety following behind the roadrunner, laughing the entire time.
