Work Text:

Awareness comes to him as the sound of waves lapping gently at a shore. The sound, and then the feeling of water along his feet, and then a sharper awareness of everything else, like breathing.

With a gasp he jerks up with more strength than necessary, something about his body feeling wrong in a way he can't describe, and his eyes— no, his camera— flickers to life along with his display. He's sitting up in the wet sand of a coast, waves beating behind him, and he tries to remember how he got here. Nothing. Okay, how about where here is? Nada. Fear rises up in the back of his throat as he tries to remember who he is.

He can't.

First things first, he fumbles for a comm on his wrist. He finds one, and while it takes a couple seconds to turn on, it isn't broken. Then, he checks his coordinates, something he's not sure how he remembers to do but apparently does, and his metaphorical eyes bug out when he reads the numbers and finds out he's about 20,000 blocks out from spawn in both directions.

How the hell did he get here?

He closes the F3 menu for now, and searches his comm for anything that might jog his memory. He looks, but there's no notes, no files, no videos, nothing except an account name that reads Hummer5718. The lack of information is so absolute that the comm seems brand new. Just purchased by someone about to leave their home server for the first time.

But that can't be true. Hummer— if that's his name— feels that despite the general amnesia, he has a pretty good sense of his personality. And if he's right, then he's not the kind of guy to venture twenty-thousand blocks out of spawn without at least downloading a music app.

He sighs, aware that this is likely a lost cause. Next step: checking his surroundings. In front of him is a simple plains biome. Nothing to write home about. But behind him is a vast ocean. Larger, his mind supplies, than any naturally generated ocean in Minecraft should be. He stares into the depths that barely glow with the light of the sun, and feels something in his chest. Something he describes as longing.

He turns his back to the ocean once again, ignoring the call of the void, and starts checking around him for literally anything. While checking the physical coast, he takes inventory. Literally. His hotbar is empty, and he doesn't have any experience. When he opens his inventory, not only does he find it empty, but he also gets the Taking Inventory advancement. And when he checks his other advancements, that's literally the only one he has.

So, unless he used cheats to teleport himself here, this means he must have walked twenty thousand blocks without even getting food.

That feels impossible, so he decides to go with the cheats explination. They're not on, but it makes more sense than walking.

Satisfied enough with his shitty explination, Hummer turns back to the ocean. He lost his memories and woke up on the coast. Logically, whatever happened to him must have happened in the ocean. There's no hesitation before he dives in to check, unnatural generataion damned.

Under the water, he feels strangely at peace. Maybe it's the chill, maybe it's the dark. But if he weren't mortal and very vulnerable to drowning, he'd like to live under here permanently.

He dives down repeatedly, searching the ocean floor and finding nothing, not even any fish. He explores further and further out until he's barely able to glance at the floor before he has to swim back up. But he doesn't stop, he pushes himself until he ends up drowning two blocks from the surface of the water.

He mentally kicks himself for his stupidity. Now he will have to travel all the way back from spawn, because he sure as hell didn't see the Sweet Dreams achievement in the advancements page. It's not the worst setback, but it is definitely annoying.

Except when he respawns, he respawns in the ocean, just a short swim out from spawn.

…Weird, but he could have set worldspawn when he was still using cheats. It's the only explination that makes sense, and since he doesn't feel like travelling back to spawn just to check if he did actuually have anything like a starting chest, he decides it's not an awful place to stay while he solves his amnesia.

It takes longer than he'd like to admit for Hummer to check the internet. In his defence, he clearly has brain damage.

He's in the nether looking for blazes when the hell-like conditions remind him of some of the social media websites out there, and he slaps himself in the face. He then gets destroyed by a wither skeleton, but he kind of deserves that one.

He remembers a little about the internet, and decides to check reddit first for any information on the ocean, because its unnatural appearance might be why he came out here in the first place. And, to his delight, he finds a post! Many posts, even! But the posts he finds are less about the strange ocean, and more about something else.

The Leviathan.

He's vaguely aware of the concept of a leviathan as a giant sea beast that prowls the ocean, and is even more vaguely aware of it in terms of religion. But he doubts that the leviathan from the bible is even real, let alone in the overworld. But he doesn't doubt that there is something in the oceans, despite all logic telling him otherwise. And calling whatever it is "The Leviathan" is perfectly suitable, in his opinion.

Regardless of what its called, every post about the 20k 20k oceans seems to be linked to the Leviathan, even if most claims appear to be faked or misunderstood. He's tempted to dismiss it, but he can't help but linger on the idea of the Leviathan. On the idea of something lurking in the depths of an ocean that shouldn't exist.

Something like that could definitely pull a guy like him to twenty thousand blocks out from spawn without even opening the inventory.

And so he decides that he needs to find the Leviathan. And when he decides this, a bone deep certainty settles in his mind. The certainty that if he finds the Leviathan, he finds answers.

Hummer spends weeks scouring the depths of the internet, from reddit posts to bug reports to youtube videos of poorly faked encounters with three views and two dislikes. He slogs through post after post, fake after fake, until he can't take it anymore and he goes outside, runs into the surf, and just screams. Loudly.

But naturally, his research hasn't been only other people's experience, no. He's gone ahead and built himself a suitable ship (from a youtube tutorial) and a flying machine (also a youtube tutorial) to send him to the bottom of the impossibly deep ocean. He's spent hours under the waves, pressure pushing at his bones, getting tangled up in kelp and getting lost in the dark and dying, again and again, without a single sighting of the Leviathan. He screams loudly again.

His only proof that he's not searching for nothing, that his hours of effort into this weren't wasted instead of, you know, going to a hospital for amnesia, is because at times, when he's deep under the water, and his water breathing has just run out, and he can't even see the sun, he feels it. The slightest change of pressure in the water, a gentle ringing in his ears. His mind calling out to something that's missing, and that something responding in an abstracted acknowledgement that feels like cold water in his blood.

It's this feeling that causes him to be so sure that Aronax_J's claim that she's solved the Leviathan isn't the end.

He first hears about the museum from a rare twitter expidition. He hates the site, it seems to practically ooze malice, but sometimes there's a new post with information, even if its fake, so he accepts it as a necessary evil in his search.

But he supposes it was worth it in the end, right? A self proclaimed "mystery solver" who claims to have solved the Leviathan, and even has a helpful museum on the phenomenon's entire history. Sounds great! Wonderful, even! Hummer is absolutely not jealous that someone else found Levi—the Leviathan first. He is capable of being normal about this.

So, he finds the IP and visits the museum. He admits it, the museum itself is gorgeous, and the noteblock commentary is well voice acted, and the exhibits all seem to be placed with a large amount of care. And the water lantern he finds when he accidentally makes a wrong turn is just… incredible.

But then he finds the Leviathan exhibit, and Aronax proclaims that it's just a bug. Two bugs, technically. But a bug nonetheless. And something in him rages against that. He clutches at his sleeves, fingertips digging into the metal of his arms through the fabric, and a rage he didn't know he could feel boils over as Aronax's smooth voice continues to lie.

He leaves the server before the jukebox finishes.

And when he gets back to his own world, to the base he spent hours building just to store his research, he knows it's over. No matter how much he searches, it won't help him. Because no one will believe him. If—when he finds definite proof, people will point to Aronax, who did it first, and therefore she must have done it right. And no one will believe in Levi. (But when was this about people believing in him? Wasn't it about his memories? The thoughts make sense, but logic is weak to emotion.)

He won't stop searching, no, but it doesn't feel worth it anymore. Not without someone else to believe.

Unless there is someone.

The idea comes to him when he's comparing screenshots. Of course, so many of them are fake, but plenty of people fall for lies when they're easy to believe. But if someone can notice a convincing enough lie? They just might be able to notice the flaws in Aronax's museum, and they'll want to help him.

Hummer thinks over his idea for a few days, before the idea to use temperature gradients comes to him. Hard to notice unless you really know your stuff.

And so he begins his fraud.

Wifies joined the game

The notification appears when he's out on his boat, getting things ready. Unprepared, Hummer scrambles to his smaller, actually mobile boat, and rows all the way to shore. He doesn't see Wifies at his home, though, and calling out to him on the voice mod doesn't reveal any answers. He checks the server list, and sure enough, Wifies is displayed right above his own name.

Wifies must have spawned in at 0, 0 then. Which means he didn't set the worldspawn to where he woke up. Weird. He files this away as a mystery to solve after he and his new companion finally find Levi. For now, he waits.

He sends Wifies down to the bottom of the ocean. He feels a little bad for his trick, but he was never able to figure out the redstone to call the flying machine back up without him, and Hummer knows that Levi won't come out for someone with an easy way to come up. He doesn't know how he knows, but he does.

He waits a little bit, for the elevator to descend, counting down in his head the time he knows it takes to reach the bottom of the impossible ocean. Once he has counted down mentally, he peers over the edge of the dock, squinting into the deep blue and trying to see if his companion has exited the elevator yet.

He leans forward further, unsure if that speck is kelp or Wifies, only to start tipping into the water. "Woah, shit—!" He exclaims, flailing and grasping for the end of the dock. He manages to catch himself, but he ends up with his right side partially submerged in the ocean.

Hummer pulls himself up out of the water with a curse and tries to shake himself dry like a dog. Failing that, he at least knows Wifies is nowhere near the elevator, and so he can pull it back up without consequence.

Is it a little cruel to trick his new friend/aquaintance? Again, he ponders the morality of his scheme. But if Wifies can get even a glimpse of the Leviathan, it will all be worth it.

Once the elevator is succesfully up, Hummer sits at the edge of the doc again. It's pretty hot out, and his outfit isn't the coolest, so he carefully removes his shoes and socks, rolls up his pants, and sticks his feet in that to the ocean.

The cold of the water relaxes him instantly, lapping gently at his metal body. It's relaxing in the same way the ocean always is for him, and he sets a five minute timer on his comm before laying back on the dock and turning off his camera, basking in the sun.

He lays there peacefully, dozing, until the sound of his alarm has him jerking up, scrambling to rush back to the beds. He makes it just as Wifies spawns in, and the player shoots Hummer a withering glare.

Hummer ignores the glare, and instead asks "Did you see anything?"

Wifies frowns. "I… when I got back, the flying machine was gone. I cam back with like a minute left, and I just drowned."

Hummer looks away in guilt, but Wifies continues talking.

"Did you miss-pull it or something? Did you pull it early?"

"No, I pulled it early, yeah," Hummer confirms. But that's not the important part. He looks back to Wifies. "But did you see anything?"

Wifies's frown deepends, and he gives Hummer a look that is, in his opinion, completely undeserved. "Was I supposed to? I-I just ended up drowning, why did you… why would you pull it early? I just died for like… no reason."

Hummer turns away from the upset man before him, sheepish. "I-I I mean, I don't know. This… it sounds a bit weird, but I've got this theory, okay. Do you remember what I said about all the people trying to find Levi and they're doing it the wrong way?"

"Yeah, in the reddit post, right?"

Hummer turns back to Wifies, display bright. "Y-yeah, I don't think Levi wants to be found with flying machines or water breathing or fancy museum exhibits. I think he just wants you to believe."

Hummer clearly didn't explain well enough, because now Wifies just looks confused. "Sorry, can you explain what you mean?"

Hummer lets out a nervous laugh that sounds more like a scoff. "I mean, you have to believe that the Leviathan will come to you. If you leave yourself open and have faith, I think Levi would show himself."

"So you, just to make sure I get it— you pulled the flying machine early so that I would drown because then I'd be… what? Like, more vulnerable for the leviathan and it would show itself?"

"Hmm, yeah. Sort of, yeah. I mean… but he didn't, did he?"

Wifies looks at the ocean. "No. I mean, the entity counter moved, but I didn't see anything."

"I mean… that makes sense, I mean…" This is probably the worst part of the whole thing for Hummer. His plan, the one he had been hinging upon in more ways than one, failed. He was so sure that if he engineered the most organic encounter possible, but it didn't work… "Maybe it's because I let you drown that Levi knew that I was trying to—"

"Well look," Wifies cuts him off before he can spiral too much. "I don't want to sound rude. Listen, um, I don't know if I agree that the leviathan… cares… abotu what we do, per se. Like, there are definitely better and worse ways to go about finding it, but it's… still just code in a game, right? Like, it can't read our thoughts or anything like that, you know what I mean?"

"Heh, yeah… I mean, you really believe that?" It feels like someone has just poured a bucket of ice down the back of Hummers shirt. He tries to play it cool, but even to him it doesn't sound like he's doing a good job. "I mean you managed to look past what everyone else had said about Levi. You're the only other person who knew that they were all wrong and like, deep down, there's more to Levi than some stupid open and shut case."

"Wait, sorry, who is wrong?"

Somehow, in just five words, Wifies has caused Hummer to want to take a running leap off the edge of the boat and never come back up. He plays it off with an awkward chuckle, hoping Wifies misheard him, and not that this man has somehow never heard of Aronax. "I mean, where to start? I mean, Aronax, first of all, I mean there's so many to go through, I don't know…"

"Who?"

"Aronax?"

"Am I supposed to know who he is?"

Nevermind, Hummer is actually going to strangle himself with kelp. "Who she is."

"Sorry, she. Am I supposed to know who she is?"

Deep breaths, Hummer. Deep breaths.

"I mean th-the mystery solver. I mean— kind of mystery solver." Deep breaths, Hummer. "Basically, she's the one with the server. She claims to have solved the Leviathan. I mean, that's the one that everyone takes her word for. And, I mean, now it's done. I mean there's nothing to it, apparently."

"What?"

"I know…"

"No, I mean like, I've— what, what server? I've never heard of this server."

And Hummer watches as his hope shatters into an excited grin about the gods-damned museum.

The Museum isn't much better than the last time he was there. In fact, it might be worse, because he's well aware this time of Aronax's flawed view on the Leviathan.

No, scratch that— it's definitely worse. Because Wifies is falling for her lies hook, line, and sinker.

Wifies looks like a kid in a candy store, bouncing off the walls and listening with rapt attention to the jukeboxes. If he puts this in his video, he will probably have lovely, upbeat music and joyful commentary.

Meanwhile, Hummer drags himself behind Wifies, and if he had a sound track, it would 100% be that sad piano meme song from however long ago.

Wifies keeps making comments about how Aronax is soo smart, and how he never even thought of that, and how her research is so good, and Hummer burns with a weird mix of envy and frustration. He wants to say "I figured out the thing with the guardians too, you know!" But he doesn't, because despite everything, he can't help but find Wifies's excitement… cute.

That doesn't mean he's happy to hear that Wifies has totally fallen for Aronax's siren song.

But then Wifies says that he's still open to looking for the Leviathan with Hummer. Not directly, but Hummer takes the offer and clasps it tight in his hands, takes it between his jaws like a dog.

And in thanks, he shows Wifies the water lantern.

It's still gorgeous. Just, a wonderful example of redstone engineering. And on the trip down, Wifies smiles at him, and Hummer gazes back, wishing he had a real face instead of a TV so that he could smile back.

In the water, Hummer swims ahead of Wifies, basking in the cool light that filters through the meters of water above them. It's wonderful, being able to swim with Wifies. Especially because they don't have to worry about drowning, with the conduit.

On the way back up, laughing with his companion, Hummer thinks he can get Wifies to believe, after all.

And then they find the portal.

Hummer stares out at the ocean as the waves cause the boat to gently rock. There's a deep pit of something like despair that he's refusing to acknowledge, sure that something must have gone wrong.

"So what happened?"

Hummer turns to his companion, and ascends the steps to be eye level with him. "What do you mean?" he asks, pretending like his world isn't falling apart around him.

Wifies sighs. "Bro, we died. Like…" he searches for the right words. "Why did you— why did you suggest that?"

Hummer swallows around something thick in his throat. "I-I mean, did you think I suggested it thinking it was gonna fail?"

"Well, I think you suggested it without thinking at all! I don't know, like, it's happened twice that you've told me to drown, and now I'm banned!" Wifies is obviously upset, and he's trying to remain level headed but Hummer notices how his hands clench tight at his sides. Hummer looks away, afraid of what he might see in the man's eyes. "Literally the server with perhaps the most information on the leviathan ever recorded is now completely gone, and we died for pretty much no reason. You know, I had a hunch that was going to happen, and I could have saved myself. I had a water breathing potion, but you know, I chose not to throw it, because I trusted you."

The pit in Hummer's stomach is gone in an instant, replaced by sweet relief. He looks back to Wifies. "You had an extra potion?"

Wifies remains unimpressed. "Yeah, I grabbed one from the barrel just in case, but I didn't use it."

Hummer leans forward and grabs Wifies's arms, upset. "Well, that's why it didn't work!"

Wifies gently pulls his arms back, and Hummer releases them. "What do you mean that's why it didn't work?"

"What did I say? You have to believe! I-d-like Levi—" Hummer gestures wildly at the ocean, and cuts off Wifies when he tries to interrupt. "Levi won't come out if you don't believe, and you had an extra w-breathing potion on you."

"I did believe I didn't—"

"That means you didn't—"

"—throw it! I—"

"—believe!"

"—didn't throw it!"

"So what?" Hummer shouts. "If you— if you could have saved yourself? It means you're holding back, and you didn't have faith."

Hummer takes a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. He shouldn't be yelling at Wifies, but he's just so upset that his companion so completely refuses to believe.

"Bro, I genuinely like…" Wifies runs a hand down his face with a sigh. "I don't know what you want me to say. I had, yeah, I had a water breathing potion, but I didn't throw it cus' I believed. I tried to trust you and then nothing happened!"

Hummer throws up his arms in frustration and makes to argue that no, actually, you didn't, but Wifies keeps talking, glancing briefly at the ocean and then back to him.

"I died. Like, it was for nothing. What does it matter if I believe? You realize this is just a game, right? Like, the leviathan, if it is real— which is a big if at this point— it is a combination of two bugs. Aronax was probably right, like I don't think the leviathan cares if I have faith—"

"NO!" Hummer grabs Wifies's arms again, desperate. "Lev-Levi cares! Levi, he cares!"

Wifies doesn't say anything, and Hummer lets go of the other man in shame, and backs away a couple of steps, screen burning bright red like a flush.

"I just can't, like I don't— I fundamentally don't agree." Wifies breaks the brief silence, face neutral. "Like I don't… Look. I know you're smart. With the exception of Aronax, I don't think there's a single person in the world that's done as much research as you have on the leviathan. So, you should know this more than anyone else. Do you have any reason to believe that this thing is more than just zeros and ones? Like, do you have any actual proof that shows you that the leviathan is more than some bug, or, like, some hoax that people have just been making up?"

Hummer sighs, thinking about the words. It's true, he doesn't have any definite proof. But he knows how he's felt, down in the depths. He knows that the way his mind and body calls out to whatever lurks in the ocean is real. "I mean…" he begins, trying to articulate this without coming off as completely crazy. "I… I know what I think is right is right. and that's all that matters. I can… feel it."

Wifies clearly doesn't believe him. "Great, you can feel it. So, did you feel it when we drowned?"

Hummer's breath hitches, and he stumbles back slightly. Wifies's face immediately softens, and he looks away from Hummer's screen.

"Okay, look, I'm sorry. Um, it's realistically— it's not that big of a deal. We can just log on with an alt account. I doubt they have like, IP bans on the server. So, it doesn't matter. Like, I can just log back on. It's not a big deal. That being said, I don't know… There's one more thing I want to try out. It's an idea I had… if you want to do it together?"

Recognizing the olive branch for what it is, Hummer listens to the rest of Wifies's idea, and agrees. They make plans to meet on the server, but before they leave, Hummer has one thing left to say.

"Also, yeah, um…"

"What?"

"Sorry about lashing out."

"No, I'm sorry too," Wifies says, smile genuine. "Like, I don't know why I'm getting mad, it's literally just a—"

Hummer watches from the background as Wifies semi-succesfully cons another player into giving them his stuff.

Over the past few days, he feels like he's really gotten to know the man before him. Of course, they haven't spoken about much beyond the Leviathan, but in the offtimes, when Wifies turns off his recording to set something up, or just because something is taking too long, they'll just… talk.

Or rather, Wifies will talk, and Hummer will listen.

Wifies seemed really surprised when Hummer mentioned that he hadn't seen any of his videos. Hummer had simply shrugged, saying he didn't really have a lot of time to dedicate to watching youtube videos when he could be doing something instead. In response, Wifies decided to tell Hummer all about his videos, the mysteries he's gone about solving, the people he's played with, and the community he's built.

Hummer listens with rapt attention, not super caring about the actual details, but more so about Wifies himself. Little bits of the man's personality slip in while he rants about the most recent mystery he solved, nothing concrete on its own, but when it together like a puzzle they form a picture. A picture of the man before him, kind and dedicated, witty and charming, and someone Hummer…

Hummer, foolishly, wishes that Wifies would talk about something other than his work. He's consciously aware that, close as they may seem, their companionship is nothing more than a means to an end, for the both of them. Wifies needs content for his video, and Hummer needs someone to believe him. Despite this, Hummer longs to be real friends with the man. Maybe it's just because he hasn't spoken to anyone ever since he went on his Leviathan deep dive, but Hummer is so, so lonely. And he thinks he wants Wifies to fix that.

Back to the present, Wifies does win the challenge he proposed (and Hummer is certain he's rigged it, even if he's not sure how,) but the player refuses to cede the supplies without payment. Increased payment. Hummer is about to tell Wifies that it's alright, between the two of them they can grind the materials needed in a day or so, but apparently Wifies is willing to sacrifice more than Hummer thought.

"You know, it's crazy what seventy dollars can get you."

"I literally do not want to hear it at all."

They're arguing again.

It's the same shit as last time, about how Wifies just… doesn't believe. It breaks Hummer's heart. He's tried so hard to get through to Wifies, to get him to believe with every fibre of his being. But clearly, it was always a lost cause. Wifies was set on his opinion from the very beginning.

Hummer is holding back tears, keeping his display angled away from Wifies, making rigorous eye contact with the TNT. Wifies tries to plead with him, tries to make him see his point of view, but Hummer knows his point of view is just the same as the rest of them. So set on Levi not being real, that they refuse to see the fact that Levi wants to be found.

Despite this, Hummer wants Wifies to believe. No matter how impossible it is, Hummer wants Wifies to know what he does, that Levi is real and he cares. And, deep down, there's a part of Hummer that is afraid. Mind numbingly terrified, even, that if Wifies can't believe in the Leviathan, then it's all over.

So Hummer asks once more. And Wifies responds.

"I don't know if I can believe in something that might not even exist."

Hummer can barely breathe. Right, of course, he was foolish to believe Wifies could ever believe in anything besides his own rationale. Except… there's one thing that Wifies can believe in. One thing that can save them both. The solution to the problem. Hummer's mind sings with desperation as he says his final plea.

"Then believe in me."

"…Okay." Wifies drops the potion of water breathing. "I believe in you."

It works. Wifies believes in him. Hummer could cry tears of joy, but for now, he picks up the potion, stares at it, and throws it to the side. He feels Wifies's eyes on him as he lights the TNT, and sprints to the back of the sub near Wifies, shielding the other man from the explosions damage. He doesn't even process the fact he's accidentally picked up the potion again, so relieved that Wifies believes.

He runs ahead, dives into the cool water, feels his body relax as he turns to see Wifies follow him. If he could smile, he would.

They float together as their air depletes, staring at eachother. Wifies's face is impossible to decipher through the water, but Hummer believes there's a smile on his face. One that doesn't leave, even when they start to drown. One that doesn't leave, even as Wifies turns away.

The moment he does, Hummer explodes.

Well, not quite. First, millenium of memories flood his mind. Lifetimes upon lifetimes of memories return themself to Hummer, and he realizes with cold dread and a crescendo of joy that he is the Leviathan. With that realization, Hummer lets go of his disguise, and instantly his body unfurls into a million miles of scale and flesh, all trapped in, between, and outside of code.

It is one, once again. The Leviathan. Hummer. There is no endpoint, no clean transition. Everything that Hummer was so to is the Leviathan, and everything the Leviathan has been is now Hummer as well. He, it is something beyond mortal comprehension, but now… it wants to be comprehended. By one man.

It's trivial to grant the human that restored it to its true form sanctity under the waves. It believed in it, after all. Truly believed.

The leftovers of the player form float in the water, and the Leviathan (or Levi, or Hummer) watches as the human who believed in it mourns him. "Why did I survive, why did Hummer die?" The human, Wifies, asks, and Hummer longs to respond, but he cannot, not without exposing its true form to a human mind. But the logical explination of why it cannot does not satisfy him anymore, and it finds with some measure of disgust that its stint as human has left him with the human desire for connection. For love.

Want and desire take control of his mind as Wifies cries out for him, and when before the Leviathan would simply consume something it wanted to keep close, now he wishes to preserve Wifies in some other way. To drag Wifies down to the depths of its realm to stay with it forever, or perhaps to elevate Wifies to its prophet, to spread his name and his work to everyone.

What it does now, however, is reach out through worlds and grab Wifies's code, and pull him through worlds until the man is falling into the Leviathan's own realm. Like it did with the few others that it had previously cornered, it takes Wifies through world borders and the void to see its palace of glimmering gold and dust.

Only this time, Hummer wants him to stay.

He follows behind him, the Eurydice to Wifies's Orpheus, as his believer stares with fear at its grand realm.

His believer ventures through its realm, unsteady and afraid, and the part of it that is Hummer wants to show itself so bad, but it holds itself back. As Wifies keeps asking the sky, the ground, the Leviathan why it took him but not Hummer, Hummer wishes that he could coalesce back into player form and show Wifies that he is here. But i knows that it is not time, not yet.

What it can do is bear his heart for Wifies to see, to know, to feel. It lays itself raw, as best it can in this digital prison, trying to communicate the love (and it is love that he feels, foolish as it may be) he has for his believer.

But Wifies collapses in front of its heart, and the Leviathan knows that as much as he loves him, the realm of a god is not suitable for a mortal, and so the Leviathan brings Wifies back to the world they were in beforehand, drops him on the surface with the rest of his kind, and flees.

Notes:

i didn't explicitly state it, but with the way the timeline ends up (hummer mentions having searched for "the past six months" or something) its entirely plausible that our good buddy hastur is the one responsible for cursing levi

i amuse myself by implying the reason wifies did not find aronax's server is bcs he didnt check twitter

something that really had me deliberating was whether to have hummer describe the events as if he was playing minecraft, or as if he was living inside of minecraft. i ended up going with the latter because it fit the story better, but im well aware of the actual story taking place both in game and in real life. (you know what they say; you die in minecraft you die in real life.) so my new theory is that the leviathan was trapped in the game like the yellow king (presumably around the same time the 20k 20k oceans started popping up) and without memories hummer just assumes everyone else lives in minecraft like him.

there's no official transcript or even unofficial that i could find so every canon dialogue is me watching the video pausing writing down what was just said and repeating that until i have the whole segment down. and then rewriting it in prose. loaf i did this for you i hope youre happy
unrelated, has anyone noticed that hummer never directly acknowledges that this is a game?

anyway, i say this work has multiple chapters because i did intend on writing an ending scene where hummer sees the email and is like "aww man fuck it" and theyre gay but i literally could not make myself write it. i blame the podcast malevolent. id like to get around to writing that ending scene someday but idfk if i will due to the adhd lol

anyway please comment if you enjoyed or else i will find you
