Superfish must have been struck by some wayward cupid's bow. That's the only explanation for the way her heart beat out of her chest every time DJ so much as looked at her.
It was the wretched creatures' specialty to catch people off guard, so sneaky that not even the most vigilant would notice. Superfish had always taken pride in never being hit with their stupid arrows—she's dodged, she's rolled, she's made some enemies for how she just doesn't let them "do their job". Yeah, right.
Yet here she was, following DJ into a forest, not quite sure where they were going but not bothering to ask her either. These days, she just followed DJ without question, trusting her not to lead them into something dangerous. It was becoming clearer and clearer that it's Superfish who overestimates herself. DJ only led them to places she'd enjoy, like a restaurant with particularly good burgers, or big malls with many entertaining activities.
Right now, they walked up a hill, their hands occasionally brushing together. It was embarrassing, the way Superfish blushed every time she got too close, every corner of her mind screaming at her to just go ahead and hold her hand. Damn it, and where was the blasted cupid? How did she not see it!?
DJ leaned closer to her, and she nearly jumped out of her skin when she grabbed her arm. "We're here!" she announced, voice bouncing in excitement. Superfish tried to bite back her own smile.
DJ pulled a branch aside, and Superfish gasped.
She had never seen the sky so beautiful. Soft orange hues fading into dandelion yellow, the sun set in the distance, decorated by colorful clouds. Grass and trees were lit in a bright yellow, golden, leaves moving gently in the wind. Further up, she glimpsed plum hues fading into the sky, calling for dusk.
"It's beautiful."
When she looked back at DJ, she saw her already staring, smile soft on her lips. "It really is beautiful," DJ agreed, but her eyes weren't on the sky.
They sat near the cliff, looking at the many hues of the sky as the sun set. They pointed out shapes of clouds to each other, Superfish discreetly making oddly-shaped clouds just to see how long it would take DJ to notice. In hindsight, her own face as a cloud was a dead giveaway, but it was still worth DJ tackling her to the ground.
They laughed as they rolled onto the ground, out of breath from the impromptu wrestling. DJ didn't get off her, puffs of amused breath pressed against Superfish's neck, fading into soft giggles. Superfish didn't tell her to move.
Just like that, the sun set further into the horizon, the sky a beautiful lilac the few minutes before it went dark. DJ moved just enough to meet Superfish's eyes, soft in the fading dusk.
"Do you like this place?"
"Yeah..." Superfish breathed out. "It's nice." She closed her eyes. "I never knew the sunset could be this beautiful."
"You've never seen it before?"
"Never paid attention to it. I didn't get the chance to see the outside world often in Obscaria. And I haven't been in the human world for long."
"Oh."
She could tell she had sparked DJ's curiosity, and she braced herself for teasing her way out of DJ's questions—but she didn't ask anything. She went back to resting against her neck, lashes fluttering against her skin as she closed her eyes.
"There are a lot of pretty things in this world. I want to see all of them with you."
How... How could she be so kind to Superfish? Did she not know how wretched a creature she was? Did she not know the horrors she'd inflicted on people just to keep herself safe? She had thought herself a failure, and then she had thought herself a monster—who was DJ to drop into her life out of nowhere and show her the way to live? Not just exist, but live.
Oh, God damn it. She was never hit by a bow, was she? It was all DJ and her stupid smile, her foolish selflessness, her damned bravery, and the endless well of love in her heart.
Superfish gently stroked her hair and blinked back her brimming tears. "I would like that."
