Chapter 1: A fledgling found

Chapter Text

Pearl looked at the small creature wailing before her. It looked like one of the back-paw-walkers’ young, but she couldn’t see any of the more grown versions. They were usually taller and didn’t let her anywhere near one of their fledglings. Usually they screamed and ran away.

So it was quite unusual to see a tiny one squealing around here, though she did see one of their moving metal thingies laying crushed. Her head turned back towards the small being and she gently nudged it with one of her paws. That turned it’s attention towards her and surprisingly it laughed at her and batted at her paw.

Pearl blinked and considered the situation for a few seconds. It had been a long time since she had raised a small one, but she did remember her mate’s sheer joy at her last foundling. A purr left her throat at the thought of her Teensy. She made a mental note to visit her kit at one point in the future.

She nudged the small one with her mouth and another laugh erupted from it, then she picked it up by their scruff and took flight. Her mate will be delighted.

…

Though she should probably feed her new young first. On one hand, her mate knew more about the back-paw walkers and would probably know what she should feed it. On the other hand, Teensy liked deer, so she could probably feed one to it. She only had to find a deer… Though hunting would mean putting down her newest kit. Hmmm…

This was a tough decision. Her thought process was however interrupted by her little chick letting out a wet cough and she saw red speckles flying from its mouth. She knew that red stuff was important so she decided to go towards her mate. She was relatively close and her mate had a knack for healing. She was also really pretty. Really pretty. Like really, really pretty.

Oh, and moody. Honestly, the time she spends napping!

This however should light her up!

---

It truly wasn’t that long a flight, just a single rotation, but her kit had begun screaming so she hurried anyways. She didn’t really understand what her kit was screaming about, but she knew that her mate would know. It had probably something to do with the red substance the fledgling kept coughing up. Luckily the correct mountain range was already in view and she quickly flew to towards the first mountain.

At the foot of the mountain, she put her darling kit down. The tiny thing was still screaming and she nudged it gently, sadly the noise did not cease.

She really should wake her mate up.

And with that she began to nudge the mountain, while chirping, cooing and whistling. With a great rumble, rocks began to fall, while trees and bushes sloughed away. Pearl wasn’t worried in the slightest even though boulders ten times her size fell around her. Her mate was always very careful and not even a single blade of grass fell upon her kit.

Her tail gently swished behind her as the dirt fell away revealing gleaming pink scales. Curved horns shone as the light finally filtered through them and eventually an eye opened. Black sclera with a pink iris surrounding a white diamond pupil.

Pearl immediately began purring at her mate while jumping on her head and giving her a gentle headbutt. This resulted in her mate also purring, though most would probably describe it as a gigantic earthquake.

They were however interrupted by the renewed wailing of her newest kit. She winced slightly as the youngling had a great pair of lungs. This also led towards her mate looking at her newly acquired chick.

Pearl puffed out her chest proudly as she proudly presented it. She knew her darling mate would love it and the pleased purr she felt resonate through her body confirmed it. She jumped down and brought the fledgling closer to her wonderful mate. Said mate tilted her head slightly and let a tear drop down on her kit.

That said drop was bigger than an adult back-paw walker was a minor detail. The skin of her little chick glistened slightly and it finally quieted down for a few seconds, but then the wailing started again as the kit let out another red wet cough.

Pearl let out her own despairing wail and looked towards her mate. She would know what to do, surely??!!

Her mountainous mate tilted her head slightly, causing another boulder thrice her size to crash down, before she began lifting herself. The sound was deafening and she could see swarms of birds flying away as her mate slowly rose, revealing the enormous pink diamond embedded inside her stomach.

She brought one of her claws to the tip of her gem and broke it off. Pearl let out a livid cry. How could her mate do this! Harming her gem! The barbarity! Does her mate not know she is loved!?! Why oh why!?!? Why does this cruelty happen?!? She was in the midst of her rant, when her mate gave a loving rumble and Pearl quieted her outrage when another teardrop fell on the pink diamond and restored it completely.

She did huff and lightly nip her mate; she was still mad after all! That got her an amused chuckle as her mate laid down again, this time she laid her head on top of her and Pearl let out her own rumble of satisfaction.

Her mate slowly brought down her claw and she saw a pink glint between them. The old tip of her mate’s diamond. A truly insignificant chip of a gem in her mate’s claws, but Pearl watched in anticipation as she brought it closer towards the child. Though if she compared the chip towards the size of her fledgling it was actually quite large.

Her mate carefully brought the chip towards the youngling while she let another tear drop down upon it. The chip and tear met her chick at the exact same time and a bright light filled the clearing. Pearl let out a questioning chirp and her mate gave her a reassuring rumble, before gently nudging her kit closer and Pearl brought it in between her paws.

It looked different now and Pearl began to clean its new bright pink fur. She was pleased at the addition of pink tail with a white tuft at the end. Two rounded lion ears had replaced the original back-paw walker ears. Though half of the head fur was still a black colour.

Hmm, now that her kit was no longer hurt, she should really think of a name for her. She looked at the pink colouring and abruptly thought that was a bad name. For some reason she really didn’t like the name Pink. It was a stupid name anyway.

No, she had a better name in mind for her kit. She looked at the colour of her fledging’s skin, at the soft peachy colour and decided that that was the perfect name. Her chick would be called Peachy and she immediately informed her mate.

She got an approving rumble in return.

She was just about to lovingly stroke her head against her mate again, when Peachy led out another cry. She nudged her kit, but no red substances left his mouth. She tilted her head before remembering that younglings needed to eat.

She turned her head towards her mate, perhaps she knew where a deer was?!
