Corruption sucked, and the fact that it left permanent reminders certainly didn't help. But to be fair, Steven probably shouldnt have stayed on homeworld for months afterwards just to try to avoid people. At least they were back now! things could be better....hopefully

You barely remember your old life anymore, as years go by and your identity morphs into Steven. The first time you got here you were stuck. Unable to come up with a way that the plot of your favorite cartoon can get changed.
But really – what could you do?
You were a toddler. Pink Diamond got abused and led a rebellion with a new name. The war already happened. Gems were already corrupted. Era two is in full swing.
Really, what could you fix?
So, instead... you opted to live. You'll probably go on life-threatening adventures later in your life. Not like someone as insignificant as you could really have that much power in this vast, completely new world...

Summary
Steven struggled in the months that followed his corruption, corruption scars making it difficult for him to pick himself up. Drowning at the bottom of his mother's sanctuary and waking up 5 years in the past, the right thing to do was obviously find a way back to the future as soon as possible.
But... there wouldn’t be any harm in staying for just a bit longer, right? There was so much in his childhood he could fix, if he was there to guide his younger self through it. His road trip can wait.
