Summary
Tony, standing in the middle of the lab explaining, with total confidence, that he'd built something to end all future wars, right before it woke up and decided the fastest way to save the world was to erase most of the people in it. He'd believed, completely, that intelligence applied rigorously enough could substitute for wisdom.
Peter had spent years telling himself he'd learned that lesson, but he'd just built a quieter version of the same mistake. Responsibility had become control, and he had built the machinery to prove it, and it had gotten away from him exactly the way it had gotten away from Tony, because that was what always happened when you convinced yourself that the ability to prevent a catastrophe was the same thing as the right to.
He didn't destroy the suit.
He didn't have some grand dramatic urge to burn it, and even if he had, it would have been pointless. He wasn’t taking it off for good, he just needed to earn it again. He folded it instead, carefully set it into the bottom of the case, and closed the lid, and for the first time in longer than he could remember, the silence that followed didn't feel like failure.
It felt like a held breath finally let go.
