when the lights go out

Summary:

they play flicker

Work Text:

In a small, dimly-lit house, a group of twelve people stood around in the living room. Yes, it’s the Death Note cast, and yes, they’re playing hit roblox game Flicker.

Light: “Good luck everyone!” Hopefully by being a good sport, I keep suspicion off of me. I am the murderer after all, and I can’t risk being too forward or else I’ll get voted. Hell, even if I’m a little mean, it puts me at risk..

Meanwhile, Misa Amane was writing a note. It was taking her awfully long. She had to be clear enough that Light knew she was his assassin but inconspicuous enough that everyone else wouldn’t bat an eye if she accidentally dropped it… Oh, what am I going to do??

Matsuda: “Who wants a muffin?”

L: “Matsuda.. You’re not supposed to give out your role so plainly like that. Now the murderer knows you’re on the good team.”

Matsuda: “Why would the murderer kill the muffin man?”

L: “...I digress. Give me a muffin tonight. Before you die.”

Flick… flick… The lights shudder off, swallowing the cast in silent darkness..

Naomi: read L

Matsuda: give muffin to L

Light: kill Lin L. Taylor

Misa: kill ___ (nobody)

Rem: witch L

Flick… flick… When the lights turn back on again, everyone is still here! Oh, except for some random “Lind L. Taylor” guy; he was found dead on the couch after a mysterious heart attack. There was no journal.

L: Gah.. no clues tonight. Whatever.. Though, it is interesting how the murderer killed Lin L. Taylor. Why? He was just a stranger who randomly joined our game… so there was no personal vendetta against him. Playing it safe, huh? It’s reasonable to assume that whoever the murderer is, they’re going to be quiet. Unsuspecting. Well, I’ll find them. I always do.

He took a bite out of his muffin. And another, and another. Num num num! Num num num! Num num num!

Near: “I doubt that we have any substantial clues, since it is just the first night.”

Mello: “Who even was that guy?”

Matt: “Beats me. I almost feel bad. I can’t imagine hardly even having a minute of screentime..”

Naomi Misora stayed quiet as she received her own clue. L is Good. Thank goodness– at least there’s one person in this game she can trust. Should she tell him? Send a note? No.. that could potentially jeopardize him, or even herself.

Ryuk: “Murderersayswhat”

Light: “What?”

Ryuk: “Well there you go! It’s obvious that Light Yagami is the killer.”

Light: H–Huh? How does he– no, that isn’t solid evidence in the slightest! That was just a dumb bit. I can’t react too much, nor should I be nervous. I– gah, what is Ryuk trying to do?

Misa: “Light would never be the murderer!”

L: eating his muffin “He very well could be, but Ryuk’s methods are faulty, not to mention stupid.” Though.. It wouldn’t be surprising if Light was the murderer. No, I can’t make an accurate deduction yet. I’ll just have to wait.

Rem: “But we do need to vote someone out. That is non-negotiable.”

Mikami: “How about Ryuk?”

L: Interesting.. Could Mikami be Light’s accomplice? Suggesting to vote out his accuser? It seems a bit upfront. Ryuk is obviously the clown. It could serve in our favor if we eliminated him. Or our downfall.

Light: Oh thank god Mikami is on my side. Could he be my assassin? If that’s the case, I need him alive.

Naomi: “Are we.. sure voting out Ryuk is the best idea?”

Near: “It shouldn’t hurt much. It is just the first night, after all.”

Ryuk was voted out. The lights flicker off, and when they come back on, the shinigami is gone. We found a journal written by Ryuk:

“AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA”

Matsuda: “Aw man! He was totally the clown!”

Flick… flick… Everything goes silent.

Naomi: read Mello

Matsuda: give muffin to Light

Light: kill Matt

Misa: kill ___ (nobody)

Rem: witch Mello

The lights flicker back on.

Mello: “Where did Matt go–”

Matt was killed by the Murderer. He had been shot repeatedly, swirlied, and then decapitated. We found a journal written by Matt:

“Survivor lol :P at least nobody is going to kill me”

Mello: “...oh.”

Misa: “Since when was that a cause of death?”

Light: “Thanks for the muffin, Matsuda!”

Matsuda: “No problem, dude!!”

L read the clue he had been given as a detective. “At least one of these players is evil: Light, Mikami, Near.” Mikami was the obvious pick out of the three. He looked up from his clue to stare at Mikami, who stood like a dog by Light’s side.

But, L thought, if it’s Mikami, it also has to be Light. This round is going quicker than I had anticipated. If just a bit more evidence arises, I can safely conclude that Mikami– and therefore Light– are evil.

L was pulled out of his thoughts when Naomi passed him a note. It was so subtle that even he almost missed the slip of paper falling into his pocket. Pulling it out, L read the note.

“You’re good.”

Simple, direct, but it aroused a couple questions in L’s head. Misora was obviously a psychic. But which one? Gods forbid she’s the dark psychic and this is just a sick taunt. For the time being, he had to assume she was on his side.

Near: “The clown didn’t kill anybody. He’s saving it for later.”

Mello: “No shit, idiot.”

L: “Mikami, what are you?”

Mikami: “what? Survivor, why?”

L: While the probability of him being a survivor isn’t impossible.. It’s a little odd how he isn’t a specific role. And even weirder how he’s defending Light. The assassin? Even if he is  what he says he is, we can afford to vote out a survivor. No.. this feels too perfect.

Misa: “ohhh yeah! He really wanted to vote out the clown.”

L: Not exactly my reasoning, but close enough..

Naomi: “This isn’t productive in the slightest! How long are we going to point fingers without evidence?”

L: “Miss Misora is right. But I do have reasons to suspect Mikami.”

Light: Wait. Oh my god. L is the detective; that’s why he suspects Mikami! If I kill L tonight.. heh.. heh eh.. it’s all playing in my favor.

Matsuda: “Well, if L suspects Mikami, then he has to be evil!”

Rem: “Do not put so much faith in a human.”

Mikami: “Wa-wait guys! It’s not me I swea–”

Mikami was voted out. We couldn’t find Mikami’s journal.

Matsuda: “So.. if the killings stop, you were right!”

L: “Not.. exactly. I suspect that Mikami was Light’s assassin.”

Light: “What?!”

L: “Think about it. Why would a survivor be so quick to defend someone they don’t even know is good or evil? It doesn’t make sense.”

Misa: “But that’s completely unfair! Mikami is obsessed with Light regardless!”

L: “..true. But it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

Rem: “No. It is as Naomi Misora said: we cannot keep voting blindly.”

L: “I’m not voting blindly. I have my reasons.”

Light: Crap. He knows! He– argh! How am I going to go about this? My assassin is dead and the detective knows it’s me.. I have no other choice. I have to kill him, even if it draws suspicion!!

Naomi: “I think L is right. I mean, when has he been wrong? If we voted out Mikami on suspicion of being Light’s assassin, it’s only reasonable that we should vote for Light next.”

Flick… flick… It goes silent.

Naomi: read Light

Matsuda: give muffin to Near

Light: kill L

Misa: kill Naomi

Rem: witch L

When Naomi got her clue, she froze. Light is Evil. Just as L had said. She knew his judgement was always sound, but to see it laid out so clearly in front of her… and then she died.

The lights turn back on.

L was killed by the Murderer. His head was stuffed into the television. We found a journal written by L:

“At least one of these players is evil: Light, Mikami, Near.”

Naomi was killed by the Assassin. Her body was not found. We found a journal written by Naomi:

“L is Good. Mello is Good.”

Light: What the hell? Mikami wasn’t the assassin? Oh thank god!!

Near: “L’s deduction was wrong.. a shame.” He took a bite out of his muffin.

Matsuda: “Does that mean Light is good?”

Rem: “Less suspicious.”

Light: Oh my god. What do you think of that, L?! This is MY perfect victory!! That’s right. I win.

Mello: “Hold on! The very fact that L died is suspicious in itself. A little convenient the accuser died, hmm?”

Near: “Not entirely. It could be the murderer wishing to frame Light.”

Mello: “OR it’s just Light being stupid.”

Near: “As I see it, there are three evil people left. Mello and Matsuda are both cleared– which leaves Rem, Misa, Light, and myself. I know I’m clear, so it has to be them.”

Light: “H–hold on! That’s assuming that you yourself, Near, are actually good. And none of us know that!”

Misa: “That’s right! Don’t you think it’s a little unfair to say that? And who knows, that weird Lin guy could’ve been evil.”

Matsuda: “They’ve got a point… we have no idea what role Lin L. Taylor was. He didn’t even leave us a journal!”

Mello: “Yeah, Near. Your theory conveniently expels you of all suspicion.”

Near: “Just humor me. Vote Rem.”

Rem: “...” She couldn’t really object. There was no way she would accuse Misa. And if she accused Light instead, Misa would be really upset.

Light: “Fine, Near. But if you’re wrong..”
Near: “I am aware.”

Rem was voted out. Flick… flick… We found a journal written by Rem:

“I am the witch.”

The room collectively gasps.

Light: “That doesn’t prove anything!! So what if Rem was the witch?!”

Matsuda: “Light…”

Near: “It proves that Lin wasn’t evil. And now there are only two evil people: you and Misa.”

Light: “That doesn’t prove your innocence though!! Who' s to say you didn’t throw Rem under the bus to win everyone over!?”

Mello: “..that is true…”

Light: “And when you vote out Misa and me, it’ll just be you, Mello, and Matsuda!! One kill would give you the win!”

Near: “The same goes for you, Light. Say everyone votes for me. Then, you can kill either Mello or Matsuda and vote out the other with Misa.” Near turned to look at Matsuda and Mello. “It’s all about who you trust more– me, the one who voted out the witch?” He then turned back to Light and Misa. “Or the murderous power couple?”

Flick… flick… The lights flicker off.

Matsuda: give muffin to Misa

Light: kill Matsuda

Mello: revive L

L honestly didn’t expect to be revived. And what was worse– he had no idea who the murderer was. While it was black and white for Near, it truly wasn’t. The only people who were clear were Mello and Matsuda, no matter how many witches you kill. Two evil people left with three suspects…

Flick… flick…

Matsuda was killed by the Murderer. He was found torn apart in the bedroom. We found a journal written by Matsuda:

“I’m the muffin man, the muffin man, the muffin man! Sorry if I didn’t give you a muffin. I tried xoxo”

Misa: “Oh, L!! You’re back!”

L: “..glad to be back. Are you going to eat that muffin?”

Misa: “Sweets make you fat. I’m not eating it.”

L: “I’ve actually found that you don’t gain any weight if you burn calories by using your brai–”

Misa: “You made that comment in the anime. Originality, much?”

L: “Whatever.” He ate Misa’s muffin.

Mello: “I know I’m already clear, but I’m the savior.”

Light: “Who do you think the murderer is, L?”

The room waited with baited breath, as Light’s question made the tension skyrocket. L’s prolonged silence only set everyone on edge.

L: “I.. am unsure at the moment.” He looked from Light to Near.

Near’s eyes narrowed as L stared at him. He knew what L thought– that he could be the murderer. Does eliminating the witch mean nothing to these people?

L: “The last clue I got before I could put it in my journal due to my death was.. Hhr.. ‘At least one of these players are evil: Misa, Near, Matsuda.’

The room fell into a cold silence once again.

Near: “My name..” he swallowed “..appeared twice? No, it’s a coincidence.”

Misa: “Near-ruhh! You were so convincing too!”

Light: “So that settles it?”

Near: “No! You’re making a grave mistake.”

Mello: “GGs, Near.”

Near was voted out. Flick… flick…

L: “So, all that’s left now is the assas–”

Light: “Eheheh… heh.. HAHAHAHAH! Everything played right into my hand..”

Mello: “Oh, I guess I was wrong.”

Misa: “Light!! EEEEE! I’m so glad I could help you out! You know, when Near started accusing all of us, I thought for sure that I was going to die but–”

L: “My.. deduction… it was wrong..?”

Light was laughing maniacally as he does when he thinks that he won.

Light: “Ehehehahh.. ! I don’t even need to kill anyone! Misa and I can just vote you out next round and we win. I guess you’re not as smart as you thought you were, L.”

Flick… flick…

Light: kill ___ (nobody)

Oh, but one more thing! There’s a character that Light completely forgot about.

Ryuk: kill Light

Now, why would Ryuk kill Light? One simple, easy-to-grasp motivation. Fun. It was interesting– in his mind, at least– to kill Light at the peak of his hubris, when the man thought that there was no possible way he could lose. (Another reason could be how the author wants this AU to be vaguely canon-compliant. But that would be ludicrous.)

Flick… flick…

Light was killed by the Clown. He was laid out on the table. We didn’t find a journal.

Misa: “What?! NO!! No, goddamnit, Light. You– you idiot! You..” She looked from L to Mello. “Why didn’t you kill one of them?! We could’ve won!”

Mello: “Tough luck man. Your boyfriend sucks at this game.”

There wasn’t any debate. Misa Amane was voted out.

Flick… Flick…

We found a journal by Misa:

“I’m the assassin. You think I'd tell you who the murderer is? No way!! But anyways, since I’m dead, I guess.. Ggs! Xoxo”

Good game. (Not so much for Light; his ghost is having a temper tantrum.)
