Chapter Text
“Roadie 💙🪶:
Happy Anniversary my love! How 77 years fly by! See you tonight!
Read 10:47 AM”
Wile E.’s heart sank upon seeing the message.
He had completely forgotten.
Ever since they started working as actors for Warner Brothers, Wile Ethelbert Coyote and Road “Roadie” Runner had been practically inseparable. Both toons of few words, yet they didn’t need to say anything to be known and loved by many others.
Today marked the anniversary of their debut episode together. 77 years ago today, they’d met on the set, and- unbeknownst to Wile E.- his co-star had fallen in love with him at first sight.
It had taken almost 10 years for the oblivious Coyote to figure out the bird’s feelings for him. It didn’t take long for Wile. E to realize the feelings were reciprocated, and the rest was history. The two had a wonderful relationship, a fulfilling career and 77 years of unforgettable memories together as partners and best friends.
But now, all those years could all be in jeopardy.
Filming had wrapped up for the day, and while enjoying a snack had seen the message upon checking his phone. He’d paused mid bite, completely freezing as he read his lover’s kind note.
If only the cameras were there to catch the spit take he’d done in that moment! He made a sound adjacent to a yelp, springing up from where he was sitting and instantly pacing around in a panic.
Every year he remembered. He’d done something nice, gave his partner a gift as per every year! But the very successful Coyote vs Acme had just been released, which had caused a spike in his fame as well as a lot more work to be done. He’d been so busy that the date slipped his mind.
He had no gift for the Road Runner.
He felt like the worst boyfriend in the entire world. No, the entire universe. How could you forget your 77 year anniversary of all things? Most humans didn’t even live that long!
For a toon, this was probably one of the greatest milestones of a relationship. And Coyote had forgotten.
The spiral continued, Wile E. quite literally pacing a hole into the ground. He pulled at his ears, trying to rationalize how he could have possibly been so ignorant.
Roadie was his everything. He was the most precious thing in his life, career be damned. He could picture his boyfriend’s face now, full of betrayal and sorrow. There would inevitably be an argument… and maybe even a breakup would follow.
How was he going to make this up to him?
Oh, Roadie… I’m sorry, so terribly sorry! He thought to himself.
He finally stopped his pacing, staring at his phone… and by extension, the message that had shifted his whole day.
Okay. Pity party over. Solutions next. He had to stay faithful to the character he portrayed himself as to the audience. And Wile E. Coyote, super genius, never gave up.
First thing’s first, he needed to text Roadie back.
He quickly grabbed his phone, trying to text despite his shaking paws.
“Coyotay 🤎:
Thank you, my darling! See you tonight, as always!”
Okay. Message sent, that would help his racing mind for a moment.
Now for the next plan of action: getting a gift for roadie.
He looked down at the sandwich splattered on the floor with a solemn expression. Lunch would have to wait, he supposed. He’d have to find the closest store and get a present before his partner got home.
He quickly typed out “stores near me” in his phone’s search engine, finding the nearest was about 10 minutes away. Not exactly ideal in the current sweltering weather, but if it meant Roadie not being heartbroken due to his ignorance, that was good enough for him.
Legs slipping in a cartoonish manner, Wile E. zipped off towards the direction of said store, running as fast as his legs could take him. He was going to make this up to his darling Roadie no matter what.
