Work Text:

1. Yeonjun

He thought his friends knew they were dating, he's pretty sure he told them… maybe. I mean if he didn't outright say it, he thought it was at least fairly obvious, especially after how long they've known each other. They definitely should've picked up on it by now.

Yeah, okay, maybe sometimes when he and Beomgyu meet new people they don't outright go "Yeah, this is my boyfriend of six years, hope you're not homophobic.” They have to sus it out a little bit. And usually their friends figure it out before they say something so normally they don't have to tell people they're dating. It's a tried and true method that has never failed before.

Except now.

Yeonjun is at their apartment for the third time this week, and Soobin's absolutely kicking his ass—in his humble opinion—at Mortal Kombat, when he asks the question that becomes the catalyst to it all.

“Hey, do you want to go on a double date with me this weekend?” He asks it casually, not even glancing away from the match.

“Mmm,” Soobin hums in response, trying to remember what Beomgyu said he had planned this weekend, “I think Gyu has a thing this weekend, I'll have to double check.”

“Why do you need to ask Beomgyu for permission?” He scoffs, looking away from the game long enough for Soobin to defeat his character, “You know what, actually don't answer. I'm not entertaining your codependent relationship. You're going.”

“…If Beomgyu is free.” Soobin responds slowly like if he says it slow enough maybe Yeonjun will actually understand what he was saying, it's not like he can force Beomgyu to cancel his plans because Yeonjun decided that they were going on a double-date.

“Dude,” Yeonjun groans, “Beomgyu can't decide whether or not you go on a date. Doyun only agreed to go on a date with me if it was a double date with his best friend. And you're the only single person I know that likes women. I promise she's—”

Single?

“Single?” Like the filter from his brain to mouth was completely broken it falls out before Yeonjun is even done talking, and then he processes the rest of the sentence, “Women? You think I like women?”

“Yes. Oh, shit, sorry was that bad of me to assume?” Yeonjun's brows furrow and he looks genuinely apologetic, “You just, never seemed interested when I talked about guys. Shit, I'm sorry, Soobin.”

He's never been this confused in his life, genuinely. His brain is going a mile a minute saying a whole lot of nothing and absolutely everything. Thoughts that stand out in the chaos include: Beomgyu is going to think this is hilarious. Women? Women? What could I have possibly done to make Yeonjun-hyung think that? Beomgyu is going to be upset that hyung didn't know that we're dating, and he's going to be pouty and moody, and somehow it will be my fault.

“I'm gay.” Soobin starts there, that's an easier topic to broach, “I like men.”

“Cool. Cool. Me too.” Yeonjun nods awkwardly, lips pursed together, like he's trying to find his way out of this colossal fuck-up and he doesn't even know that it's about to get infinitely worse.

“I'm not single either.”

They sit in silence for a moment, the Mortal Kombat background music playing while occasionally being interrupted by the characters idle dialogue.

“Oh.” Yeonjun finally lands on, looking around like he was trying to find something else to say, “Seungkwan? He's a nice guy—”

“Heol.” Soobin groans, throwing his head back against the couch, “Hyung, Beomgyu's my boyfriend.”

“… The Beomgyu I know?” He sounds completely baffled by the idea, like Soobin must be talking about a completely different person, “My Beomgyu?”

He scoffs, turning his head towards Yeonjun, lip curling up in annoyance, eyebrows pursed together, “Your Beomgyu?”

“Well, yeah. I'm his favorite hyung.”

“My tongue has been in his —”

“Stop talking, please.” he begs, “Right, okay. How long have you been dating then?”

2. Taehyun

“Sorry I'm late, Tyun-ah, you haven't been waiting long have you?” Soobin sheds his rain soaked jacket as he sits across from Taehyun.

“Not too long,” He gives him a wide-smile, all starry-eyed and dimpled. “I ordered for you.”

“Oh sick, thanks.” He takes a drink from the glass on the table, “You are absolutely not going to believe the day I had. So, we started this new project today…”

And things slip right back into routine, the way that it always has been between them. They've been having biweekly catchups ever since Taehyun commited the ultimate betrayal and quit his job to move to a different company and Soobin was left abandoned without his favorite coworker to get him through the day.

A catchup was the perfect way to destress after that horrible fuckery of a day, well, until it wasn't.

“Soobin-hyung,” Taehyun suddenly sounds serious, far too sincere, like whatever comes out of his mouth next will be completely life-changing—I'm moving, I have cancer, I don't want to be your friend anymore—Soobin braces himself for impact, “I, I don't know how to say this, but I really like you. Like, I think I could even see myself loving you one day. I want to take our relationship to the next step.”

His jaw drops. Literally. He can feel his mouth getting dry, he quickly shuts his mouth and swallows around nothing, trying to find something to say that isn't what the fuck? what the fuck? what the fuck? what the fuck?

“Uhmmm,” Soobin stalls for time, brain still completely shut down, does Taehyun really think he'd cheat on Beomgyu? What kind of person does he think he is?

“You dont have to say it back, I just figured you should know.” Taehyun smiles kindly and Soobin wants to scream. What the fuck is going on?

“Tyun-ah,” He starts, then pauses, no, “Taehyun-ssi,” Taehyun visibly flinches at the forced distance, “I, I don't know what you expected to happen when you confessed but, I would never, ever, cheat on Beomgyu and it kind of makes me feel gross that you think I would—”

“What?” He looks genuinely confused, head tilted, mouth slightly open, brows furrowed.

“Yeah, sometimes we have stupid fights but he's still the love of my life, I would never risk that for someone else and frankly why would I want to? He's it for me.” Soobin carries on like the other hadn't spoken at all, “Also, I think he would kill me, genuinely, if I cheated on him. Which, again, I would never. I don't want anyone but—”

“Hyung,” Taehyun cuts him off, “I didn't know you and Beomgyu were dating.”

“…Really?”

“Really. You never told me.” Taehyun confirms, looking more than a little annoyed but like he's trying to keep it off his face.

“Really?” He repeats himself, okay once was a coincidence, but twice…? Why don't his closest friends not know that he and Beomgyu are together.

“Really.” Taehyun says flatly, he takes a sip of his iced coffee, “So, congratulations are in order. Glad your roommate stopped pining after you and confessed.”

He doesn't sound remotely sincere, and Soobin gets the feeling that there's some kind of story there that he is unaware of.

“Thanks.” Soobin responds, choosing not to point out that they were together long before they were roommates. He drinks his own coffee, hoping the floor will swallow him whole.

3. KAI

Date night was off to a great start, he put on the stupid suit and the tie, even though he hates how it feels around his neck, but Gyu insists that it makes him look sexy—and what Beomgyu wants, Beomgyu gets. He even pushed back his hair and put on his 'nice' glasses, the ones that aren't crooked from wearing them when he's laying on the couch watching whatever drama Gyu was obsessed with that week, or the anime that he and Hyuka sat on a discord call watching together.

Beomgyu looked stunning, beautiful, breathtaking, gorgeous, sexy, whatever else adjective that he can't think of means he's making his brain melt out of his ears and his heart beat like crazy, and he's sure he's blushing and his hands are sweating and he absolutely has a crush on his boyfriend even after all this time.

“I love you,” Soobin says instead of you're ravishing, handsome, ethereal, angelic, and my dick is hard right now.

“I love you too, honey,” Beomgyu tilts his head up and catches him in a kiss, and it feels like the first time all over again, the most important moment in his life and he can't believe he gets to do this forever and that Beomgyu even likes him back. His hands go to his waist, and he pulls him closer, deepening the kiss, maybe they should just skip dinner, just stay in and take turns stripping each other of their clothes and he could take his time kissing every inch of Beomgyu's skin, like it's the first time and he's figuring out what he likes even though he knows him better than himself.

The door bell rings.

Beomgyu pulls away first, and Soobin habitually chases after him, leaning forward into him like Beomgyu will be there to catch him. Beomgyu steps out of his grasp, and straightens himself up and answers the door. Right, the door.

“Huening-ah,” Soobin scrunches his face in confusion, following after Beomgyu to look over his shoulder at Kai standing at the door and he's … drunk? “What's up?”

He takes a big gasping breath like it hurts, stumbling into their apartment completely uninvited, “Hyung,” he sounds absolutely miserable as he throws himself into Soobin's arms, burying his face in his shoulder, “I think I just got dumped.”

Soobin gives Beomgyu a panicked look over Kai's head, he can smell the cheap booze clinging to his skin, he awkwardly reaches up and pats his back, “That's rough, buddy.” He loves Kai, so much, definitely his favorite of his friends, not that he'd ever admit to it, but he has other things he'd rather be doing right now, and this is the third time that he and Mina had broken up, couldn't they wait until a day that wasn't his anniversary.

He tries to say with his eyes; what the hell do I do?

Beomgyu says back; I don't know, comfort him. Then he shuts the door and disappears into their bedroom, no doubt to change out of his clothes and call to cancel their reservation, date night is officially cancelled. He tries to hold back a sigh as he pats Kai's back consolingly, and creeps toward the couch. It's going to be a long night.

It takes Kai a couple hours to sober up and calm down, and when he finally is, he asks, “oh, by the way, what were you guys all dressed up for?”

“Hmm,” Beomgyu looks away from the TV, clearly interested but pretending not to be—it's a stupid show, hyung, no I'm not cosplaying Gojo—“Oh, anniversary dinner.”

“Anniversary of what?” He blinks cutely, head in Soobin's lap as he rakes his fingers through his hair, his feet in Beomgyu's.

“Our eighth anniversary.” Soobin answers this time, not looking away from Nanami's fight scene.

“You guys celebrate your friendship anniversary, that's so sweet.”

Beomgyu and Soobin catch each other's eyes and choose not to correct him. That can wait until he is no longer heartbroken.
