Shoto was pissed off.
It started this morning when he went to his bathroom to brush his teeth.
Something in the universe must have shifted, because the mirror above his sink, of which had previously been reliably secured, fell off the wall and shattered before he could catch it. He had to spend an extra twenty minutes cleaning up the shards.
Which, in turn, made him late to class.
When he finally did arrive to 3-A's classroom, he pulled out his chair to sit down in class. And by his luck, the chair's legs made a high-pitched screeching sound against the tile flooring. His least favorite sound in the world.
Then, at lunch, the cafeteria served warm soba for lunch.
Okay, It's not that he hates warm soba. But would it really have been so hard for them to make it cold? It's so much better that way— everyone should know that.
Iida didn't let him cool it down with his quirk, either. Sure, using quirks in non-training areas of UA was strictly against the rules, or prohibited as Iida would say, especially since UA student's quirks were likely to be particularly powerful, but would it really have been that big of an issue? It's not like he's a clumsy first year anymore.
Not that he was ever really clumsy to begin with, anyway.
Amongst all the chaos, the only highlight of his day had been when Midoriya had invited him to train with him after school.
Spending time with Midoriya was always nice. They seemed to mellow eachother out a bit, weirdly. Between Shoto's blunt phrasing and Midoriya's nervous energy, it was surprising that they actually got along.
Shoto stepped into the gymnasium.
UA had recently changed their training grounds system. They had different gymnasiums for different types of quirks. In Shoto's case, they needed to train in the gym that was specially fire proofed. Unless, of course, he wanted to set a building on fire.
He immediately tripped over a dumbbell that had been set behind the door. He fell onto the padded ground with a loud yelp, and an even louder thump.
"Oh!" Midoriya shouted from across the gym. His voice echoed. "Sorry! I meant to pick that up!"
Shoto groaned, sitting up and looking at the dumbbell.
"You already started training?" He shouted just as loud, watching Midoriya jog over to where he still sat on the ground.
"Yeah.. I wanted to lift weights for a bit before you got here. I'm really sorry again, I don't know why I set it there.."
"It's fine," he sighed, standing up. He dusted off his pants, by habit. UA's gym floors were particularly clean. Shoto really didn't know how they achieved it.
If he was being honest, he would have told Midoriya that he wasn't sure how anyone could have made a mistake that stupid, but that was the loud and very very wrong part of his brain, and Shoto knew he was just being testy because of the bad day he's had. This was just one of those things he had to let go, for the greater good of the universe, or whatever.
They didn't speak much while Shoto got warmed up. It was only a few minutes of basic stretches and a one minute plank to encourage his muscles to get with the program. And, to hopefully clear his head before they sparred.
They got set up quietly. They stood seven feet apart from eachother on the mat and stood in a fighting stance.
Midoriya had that ever determined look in his eyes. Shoto wasn't sure how well he'd actually preform today, so he had to stay guarded.
After they'd stood there for a few moments, Shoto started the spar by charging towards Midoriya with his right arm infront of his body, planning to do a close range ice attack to trap Midoriya's lower body.
But begore he could get close enough to do the concentrated attack he wanted to, one kick from Midoriya who had activated his quirk sent him flying towards the padded wall behind him. He hit it with a thump, his head hitting the wall. He fell down onto the ground.
Immediately he had a pounding headache. He laid there for a moment, groaning, contemplating whether or not he ever wanted to get up.
And then he heard a really small something hit the ground beside him. A coin, maybe? No, why would there be a coin?
He found out two seconds later that it was a screw. A screw that was keeping the wall padding attached to the wall. The thick slab of wall padding fell right on top of Shoto, pinning him to the ground, and slamming his head into the mat.
Shoto heard Midoriya gasp in the distance. It couldn't have been three seconds before Midoriya was by his side, lifting the heavy object off of him.
"Are you okay? Holy crap, whoever installed these things did not do a very good job," he rambled. Shoto could tell that Midoriya was trying to make him feel better.
Rage was not a good look on Shoto. Which is why he tried his hardest to never let it show. His first year at UA had been full of outbursts here and there, but he had been trying to push that behavior away, through meditation and trips to the school counselor and shit like that.
But he really couldn't help it this time. He could feel it in his bones. It was like a vibrating energy running through his entire body.
He didn't speak to Midoriya as he got up and stretched his neck, trying to make it feel better. He didn't look Midoriya in the eye until they were set up again for another spar.
Midoriya seemed hesitant— like he always did whenever someone got injured during training. But Shoto wasn't injured. Not at all. He felt more pumped up than he had in a long time.
The wall mat had been thrown off to the side where it wouldn't trip either of them up.
They got into position.
Shoto moved first. He used his quirk to send a trail of ice over to Midoriya, hoping to trap his legs. Midoriya dodged it, moving to the side.
Shoto decided on a closer range of attack. He dodged his own trail of ice and ran towards Midoriya, who was close to being in the corner of the gym.
Ordinarily, Shoto would know better than to question Midoriya's methods.
But who corners themself during a spar where their appointment can literally form walls of ice to trap them in said corner? It was a rookie move, if anything.
Midoriya then used his quirk to ricochet from one wall to the other propelling himself towards Shoto.
So, that was the plan, then.
Shoto made a small ice wall infront of himself that just ended up being shattered by one of Midoriya's kicks. Shoto got sent to the ground. The back of his head smacked against the mat again.
He got up quickly, ignoring the spinning, and took a few steps.
That's when he got tackled by Midoriya and sent back to the mat. Midoriya managed to pin all his limbs down.
Except for his left arm.
He pressed his palm to the side of Midoriya's torso and gritted his teeth.
Before he knew what he was doing, Midoriya had let out a pained shout and pushed himself away from Shoto, grabbing the same spot on his own torso.
it took a few seconds for Shoto to realize what he did.
There was a giant hand shaped burn on Midoriya's ribcage. His quirk had burned through Midoriya's shirt and branded his skin.
"Shit.." he gritted out, standing up as fast as he could. "Shit!" He took a step towards Midoriya who had ended up sitting on the floor a few feet away from where he had pinned down Shoto.
"It's okay!" Midoriya shouted, though, clearly nothing about him was okay. "I'm fine! It's— crap, I'm barely even.." he squeezed his eyes shut from the pain, tears escaping the corners of his eyes. "Barely.. hurts."
"No no no, no," Shoto repeated. He felt dizzy. His whole body was shaking. He hurt Midoriya.
"Uhmm!" Midoriya said, his voice reaching a higher pitch. He looked up at the ceiling of the gymnasium, obviously trying to stop crying. "I'm okay! This is fine!" His hand was clutching at the burn like he was trying to hide it.
Shoto quickly kneeled onto the mat and pressed his right hand against Midoriya's burn.
"Ow! What are you—"
"I'm- I'm fixing it, damn it!" Shoto yelled, activating his ice quirk. Midoriya immediately yelped, trying to push him away.
"Ice doesn't— you're not supposed to put Ice on a burn! Stop!"
"Well then what can I do, huh!? What do you want from me?!"
"You need to calm the fuck down!" Midoriya grabbed Shoto by the face and stared into his eyes.
He's mad,
Shoto thought. Obviously he'd be mad. Shoto is acting like an idiot.
Shoto groaned and took his hand away from Midoriya, pinching the bridge of his nose. He finally had realized how stupid he was being. Obviously you dont put plain ice on a fresh burn. He wasn't entirely sure why he did that. "We're going to Recovery Girl. C'mon." He stood up and held his hand out to Midoriya
Shoto heard Midoriya mumble "Obviously," but he chose not to comment on it.
Goddamn it.
