Naruto is telling a story and Sasuke is kind of listening. Really, kind of. Naruto has his head leaning on his own hand, arm underneath him, and while he’s talking, he’s stroking Sasuke’s bare chest. Perhaps he’s drawing shapes. Once in a while, Sasuke’s entire skin will light up and goosebumps cover him neck to toes.
Naruto’s shoulders are broad and, even though they’re well into autumn, he’s still got a tan. Everywhere except from his crotch, where he has white lines from his swimming trunks. Sasuke can’t believe he actually finds that hot.
Perhaps he’ll find anything hot. Perhaps he’s stupid about Naruto — on his stupid fucking cloud nine — because Naruto finally, god finally, brought him to bed after a whole year of impossible tension. Kissed him half-drunk but fucked him again the morning after. And the day after that. And then the weeks after that. He can’t believe it still leaves him reeling and wanting more every single time.
Like he said: stupid for him.
The nice thing is, that things haven’t really changed. Their friendship didn’t come easy and lord knows that they’re both afraid to be alone at heart, so he’s glad. After fucking that first time, they started up the playstation and gamed together. The next day, they walked to his job together and joked around.
And Naruto is still completely himself, like now—
Talking his ears off.
“So I told that guy,” Naruto says, frowning, his hand falling still on his chest. “That you’re my best friend, you know. I don’t know how he could think that I wanted to talk shit about you. You’ve always been my best friend and always will be.”
He feels himself frowning, slightly.
“Right?” Naruto asks, getting him all wrong. “It was rude as hell.”
“No. I mean: your friend?”
Naruto turns in bed, his blond locks falling over his forehead slightly. Sasuke can now see a scratch mark where he’s tried holding him, running from his neck, over his shoulders, towards his chest. It’s bright red, a mark of his nails. “Yeah? Of course.”
And they haven’t talked about it, not really. He knows Naruto was jealous, that’s for sure, but he’s had separation anxiety for as long as Sasuke has known him. Nothing really changed. Everything they’d done— it has been the exact same as when they were best friends.
Are. They are best friends.
It’s not like Naruto asked him out. Not like they went on a fucking date. Not like they’ve taken each other anywhere nice. Not like they’d bought each other presents. Not like they fucking told anyone.
He grabs his phone off the nightstand and turns around, his back towards Naruto. At first Naruto doesn’t do much; he caresses his back, because fuck, he’s patient and sweet. Sasuke kind of wants to punch him like did when they were kids. But they’re not kids. And he doesn’t want to hurt Naruto at all. He just… doesn’t know how to get this out.
“Sasuke? Did I— did I say something wrong?”
Sasuke keeps his back towards Naruto as his stomach turns painfully. This has been nice. Perhaps, just maybe, they can keep fucking each other without having it mean anything. Really, he’s not been this content in years. Naruto’s touch is not something he could miss and still— “I don’t know if I can do this friends with benefits thing.”
Naruto quiets behind him completely. It takes all his effort not to look at him, just to see what his reaction is. Sad that Sasuke is trying to end this, maybe? Shocked that he’s saying this now, after they’ve just cleaned the cum off each other?
Guilt pulls through him uncontrolled. He whispers: “It’s nice— you haven’t done anything wrong but— I can’t do it. It’ll break me.”
Now, Naruto spurs into action. He turns him so that they’re looking at each other. Him lying on his back and Naruto hanging above him. His sky blue eyes seem to be everywhere; not losing sight of him for one second, not missing a single spot.
“Is it the sex?” Naruto asks. “Because we can just— start again. Start slow. I know I was a bit— eh— prompt.” Sasuke can’t believe that he finds him funny, even now. “But we can do it differently. If it’s just sex that’s hard right now, we can just go on dating and see— see where it goes. Or something. Unless you— eh— don’t want that at all?”
Sasuke looks at him and doesn’t exactly know anymore, if it’s him or Naruto who’s an idiot. Maybe they’re both idiots for each other. Maybe that’s what it means to be in love.
“Are we dating?” he asks.
Naruto goes wide eyed. “Yeah! I hope so! What the fuck— Sasuke— What do you mean are we dating? We’ve been—”
“Fucking.”
Naruto goes completely still. “Oh fuck. I did not mean that. Sasuke—” Nothing had changed. In bed, they touched each other like they were each other’s world but nothing, not how they acted, not how they talked, had changed. But now, now Naruto takes his face between both hands and coos: “Baby.”
His chest tightens. It’s about time. Fuck, he sounds completely gone when he hums as an answer.
“I’m sorry,” Naruto whispers, and then he softly brings their lips together.
And they’ve kissed before. They’ve kissed during and after they’ve fucked, and sometimes while cooking or in between moments. But they’ve never kissed like this.
Naruto’s lips are soft, slightly open, but he doesn’t move to deepen it. Instead, he brings their foreheads together and caressed his cheeks. It’s the softest Sasuke has even felt. The sweetest he’s ever seen Naruto be.
“Go out with me?” Naruto asks, when they pull back. “I’ll take you somewhere nice. Not Ichiraku, but some nice restaurant with fancy drinks.”
Sasuke can’t help it; he’s an idiot for this man. He’s so in love with him. So he laughs.
“Yeah. Okay.”
