Akaashi slowly turned his head away from the reflection in the dark train window. Bokuto was already staring right at him, his golden-owl eyes completely wide and dead serious, entirely stripped of his usual chaotic energy. He gripped his phone tightly in one hand while his other hand twitched on his knee.
Bokuto: i realised it when the sun came up this morning

Akaashi’s breath hitched. He looked down at his phone screen, reading the short, precise texts over and over. His heart hammered violently against his ribs. When he looked back up, Bokuto’s shoulders were slumped, his eyes full of a sudden, rare vulnerability that made him look completely fragile.
"Bokuto-san," Akaashi whispered, his voice barely audible over the rhythmic clatter of the train tracks.
"Don't leave me on read in real life, Akaashi," Bokuto mumbled, his lower lip quivering slightly.
Instead of replying, Akaashi reached across the small space between their legs. He slid his hand over Bokuto's, shifting his fingers until they locked firmly between the ace's large, calloused ones. He squeezed tight, right there on the crowded morning train.
"I'm not leaving you on read," Akaashi said softly, a genuine, breathless smile finally breaking across his usually stoic face. His cheeks flared with a beautiful, brilliant pink. "I love you too, Kotaro. I have for a very long time."
Bokuto’s entire face lit up like a stadium scoreboard. He let out a loud, joyful gasp, completely forgetting his promise to stay quiet on public transit.

The sun had completely set by the time afternoon practice wrapped up, leaving the Tokyo streets crisp and cool. Bokuto and Akaashi walked side by side toward the small convenience store near the station, their shoulders brushing with every step. The heavy gym bags slung over their backs felt lighter than usual.
"Akaashi! Look! They still have the spicy tuna ones!" Bokuto cheered, practically pressing his face against the glass of the heated food display inside the store.
"I see them, Bokuto-san. Please step back slightly, you're fogging up the glass," Akaashi said, though his voice was laced with a fond softness. He paid for the food quickly, and they stepped back outside into the quiet, dimly lit alleyway next to the shop.
Bokuto immediately tore into his wrapper, taking a massive bite, his eyes lighting up. "So good! Akaashi, try some!"
Akaashi looked at the offered onigiri, then up at Bokuto. A stray grain of rice was stuck right near the corner of Bokuto’s mouth. Instead of taking a bite of the food, Akaashi reached up, gently brushing the rice away with his thumb.
Bokuto blinked, freezing in place.
Under the soft yellow glow of the streetlamp, Akaashi stepped closer into Bokuto's space. His cheeks flushed a light, beautiful pink, but his gaze didn't waver. He leaned up on his tiptoes and softly pressed his lips against Bokuto’s.
The kiss was sweet, warm, and tasted faintly of savory soy sauce and rice. Bokuto’s eyes went wide for a fraction of a second before they fluttered shut. He completely forgot about the food in his hand, dropping his arm to carefully wrap his large hand around Akaashi’s waist, pulling him just a little bit closer against the evening chill.
When Akaashi slowly pulled back, his breath was a little shaky, and his blush had deepened considerably. He cleared his throat, adjusting his scarf. "Your mouth was messy, Kotaro."
Bokuto stared at him, his face turning completely crimson before a massive, blinding smile broke across his features. "Akaashi... you're amazing! Let's get married right now! The app was 100% right!"
"Please eat your food, Bokuto-san," Akaashi whispered, hiding his smile in his scarf, though he didn't let go of Bokuto's jacket sleeve.
Meanwhile, a few blocks away, Konoha was walking home from the train station, completely dazed and staring down at his phone screen. His heart was still beating abnormally fast from the morning transit hand-holding session, and he decided to send a quick text before going to sleep.
Unfortunately, his fingers were shaking.
