Summary
On the road to the Golden Orchard, Julien struggles with what it means to host Thjazi in his shadow, and Occtis makes a promise to protect him against his worst fears, hoping that it will make Julien like him better.
“Why are you being so kind to me?” Julien asked. It was another dangerous question, he knew, but he was tired of wondering. “You have admitted that you have no care for me, so why bother with kindness?”
There was a pause, a moment of silence that hung heavy in the air.
“I heard someone say once that kindness doesn’t cost anything,” Occtis said, and Julien couldn’t help but snort. That was certainly a fucking lie. “I know, but that seems like a better sort of person to be, so I’m trying.”
