Summary
Occtis Tachonis needed to get married. The alternative was…well, getting married. Married to Zebani Halovar, to be exact. She was nice enough — shy, awkward, perhaps a bit plain — but she wasn’t what troubled him. It was her family that was the problem, and it was his family; it was the absolute mess that would happen if the Halovars and the Tachonises knit their families together. The two noble houses were already powerful on their own; together, they would be unstoppable, and Occtis very much needed to stop them.
So what was the solution? Not marrying Shadia Fang (as much as Thaisha joked about him being her son.) Not marrying another noblewoman. No, if he wanted to survive his family's wrath, he’d need someone acceptable. Someone bearable. Someone useful. But who could be all of those things, but without pressing his family’s thumb to the scale all the more?
A solution arrived on Halandil Fang's doorstep, asking for a magical stone.

Occtis opened his eyes and looked down at the paper again. The pen hovering in the air had splotched ink onto the blank space, and he sighed, scrubbing his free hand through his tangled hair.
There was absolutely no reason why he should be having this much trouble with this paper, other than the nagging headache and the strange chill that had been making him shiver for at least an hour, even though the dorms were enchanted to stay at a pleasant temperature. He knew the material, this wasn't one of his harder classes, and it should have been an easy enough assignment, except for how it wasn't.
Or: Occtis spends finals week growing dangerously sick in his dorm room, with no one around to help him except his new familiar, and learns for the first time just how deeply a dead thing loves him.
