Summary
Harlan Thrombey is dead.
His nurse, Marta Cabrera, thought she'd have to move on. Find another job, another dying patient. She'd never be able to find someone to replace his friendship, of course, but she could always find another client. But then his will was read, and she was his sole heir. Of course, his family is challenging it. After all, a single woman with no family connection surely cannot keep the inheritance, right?
Meanwhile, Ransom Drysdale is lost. He knows his grandfather wanted him to be independent of his fortune, but Marta's situation offers an opportunity. A marriage of convenience. An answer to their plight. A legitimacy for her, a fortune for him. And what they'd do with that in the future is their business. However, it is hard to stay ruthless when dealing with someone as stubbornly kind as Marta Cabrera.

Summary
Occtis Tachonis needed to get married. The alternative was…well, getting married. Married to Zebani Halovar, to be exact. She was nice enough — shy, awkward, perhaps a bit plain — but she wasn’t what troubled him. It was her family that was the problem, and it was his family; it was the absolute mess that would happen if the Halovars and the Tachonises knit their families together. The two noble houses were already powerful on their own; together, they would be unstoppable, and Occtis very much needed to stop them.
So what was the solution? Not marrying Shadia Fang (as much as Thaisha joked about him being her son.) Not marrying another noblewoman. No, if he wanted to survive his family's wrath, he’d need someone acceptable. Someone bearable. Someone useful. But who could be all of those things, but without pressing his family’s thumb to the scale all the more?
A solution arrived on Halandil Fang's doorstep, asking for a magical stone.
A solution that caused several other problems.
