Yolanda nods approvingly at the packed car trunk. Food, tent, sleeping bags, everything the list had said to bring camping with them. They weren't going terribly far, since neither of them had ever been camping properly before, but they were going to be spending the night in the woods, so she'd wanted them to be as prepared as possible.
Trinity comes up behind her. "Ready to go? We should head out now if we want there to still be daylight when we get to the campsite."
She nods. "Let's roll!"
Trinity is driving. Yolanda was born and bred in Brooklyn, so she hadn't learned how to drive until she'd gone away to med school, and she'd never managed to feel comfortable with it. She was a passenger princess as much as she could be, and Trinity was always happy to drive when they needed it. It wasn't the reason Yolanda loves her, but it certainly doesn't hurt.
Trinity drives almost casually, with one hand on the wheel and the other on Yolanda's knee. Yolanda rests her hand atop Trinity's and laces their fingers together. Trinity flashes her a smile. Yolanda knows very well that her girlfriend does best with some physical contact. She feels guilty sometimes (all the time) about the way she'd pushed Trinity away for nearly a year before they'd finally talked things through and decided to try to have a real relationship. She was trying to make up for it now, but she still flinches when she thinks about the ways she rejected Trinity's attempts to find comfort in her. She'd never meant to hurt her, of course, she'd just known that these kinds of gentle touches would make it all the harder to remember that this was casual. But it wasn't casual anymore, so she gets to touch and be touched to her heart's content. It is so much better now.
Pulling into the little campground, it's emptier than she'd expected. Everything online had indicated that people regularly still camped through the winter, but perhaps they are just early in the day? It's going to be dusk soon though. Regardless, they are ready to get all set up. Trinity parks at one of the campsites and the two of them start unloading.
"Okay! Let's get the tent set up then. Shouldn't be too hard," Trinity says, stepping out of the car. She pops the trunk as Yolanda steps out of the passenger side.
"Bring the tent over here, it looks like there's a space set up for it!" Yolanda calls back to Trinity. While Trinity brings the tent over and starts unpacking all the parts, Yolanda goes back to the car and grabs their bags.
"Hey, baby, have you ever pitched a tent before?" Trinity shades her eyes as she looks up to speak to Yolanda.
"No, but how hard can it be?" Yolanda answers, crouching down next to Trinity to examine the tent pieces.
Fabric pieces, sticks, tent pegs are all spread out on the flat area at the campsite. They spread out the tarp and start working on trying to get the actual tent itself set up. Yolanda tries to attach the sticks to the fabric pieces but even when she does, it doesn't pop up the way the video she watched quickly at home promised. She huffs in frustration.
"I'm going to try to look up a video, see what we're doing wrong," Yolanda tells Trinity, who grunts back, dealing with her own unruly stick. Unfortunately, when she tries to go on YouTube and look for the guide again, she realizes there's no cell service. Her phone just says SOS, no way of getting on the internet. She groans and Trinity glances up.
"No luck?" she asks.
"Nah, cell service is out, can't get a signal." Yolanda replies. "Guess we're on our own."
Trinity squints at the fading sunlight. "I don't think we have much time left to get this set up. I don't see any light for once the sun sets." Yolanda sucks in a breath. "I don't know about this, maybe we should go back," Trinity continues.
"You're giving up that easy?"
"No! I just think we could practice somewhere lower stakes and come back another time."
Yolanda flops inelegantly onto the tarp. Trinity giggles. Yolanda says, "Come on, let's just sleep under the stars." She gestures at her girlfriend to lay down next to her with a pout. Trinity wavers, but eventually she lies down too.
"Fine," says Trinity, "but we should at least unpack the sleeping bags so we can be warmer. And we're not going to go to sleep, I don't trust the bear situation here."
Yolanda leans over and smacks a kiss on Trinity's cheeks. "Thank you, baby."
"Yeah, yeah, we all know I can't resist your pout."
