    Travis' once smooth, richly dark skin was now an ashen mockery of its former deep colour. His weightlifter physique was shrunken, his skin loose across his body; his dark shirt and trousers sagged around what was once a large, formidable frame, his cheekbones standing out starkly in a now-wizened face. He’d stopped screaming, at least, rendered insensible by the pain; the machine was still connected to him, but was no longer draining his life-force.
